Blue & Gold
Great crowd tonight! It's really gonna be rocking next week. Can't wait! Side note: With 4300 at the game tonight, those JAR bleachers were pretty maxed out. I was sitting in the upper south-side end zone & with people climbing all over each other to find seats it's downright dangerous.
LoyalZIP
That was a snoozer, in a good way though.

skip-zip
A few things: 1) If you're open just shoot the ball. It's a great way to avoid turnovers. Everyone had the green light tonight. We shot twice the number of 3's that we shot on Tuesday. 2) Reggie's night started reminding me of the Central Michigan game at home last year. He could have saved a few for the next couple of games 3) I wish we would have rested some of those guys much earlier. But, that's why I don't make half a million coaching. wadszip
Well, I nearly followed through on my break from following the team (see post from the Miami thread). I didn't go, instead opting to go to a friend's house to hang out. Funny thing is, when I left, I begrudgingly turned over to 1350 to see how the game was going. When I flipped it on, the Zips were up 59-26 so I was like, OK, I'll listen until I get there. Well, by the time I got there it was 63-41, and I was like, here we go again. They'll slop through the second half and have to hang on for an 8-10 point win. Anyway, just got home and checked the box and saw the final. Maybe I'm the bad-luck charm as the team outscored BG 85-39 when I wasn't listening, lol. On the bright side, there is no way I can make it Tuesday, even if I wanted. So, I'll take one for the team and continue my "break", haha. But if they can beat the Bobcats, not sure I'll be able to stay away from the Kent game, unless it's sold out by that time. One last observation, saw the 4,300 number. I think it's clear how much the Cavs and HS games have killed our first two Friday numbers, which IIR, were both low 3,000 (WMU and Buffalo). The WMU game, the Cavs were @Minnesota that night, but HS was in full swing (though midseason). I'm guessing attendance, due to it being the league opener, was probably at least 1,000 less than if it was on Saturday afternoon. The Buffalo game, the Cavs were at home against Boston and high school basketball was at the end of the regular season (like 5-6 league deciding games in just the Akron area that night). That was a huge game and only low 3,000 (It didn't "help" that Buffalo students canceled their trip due to a bad storm.) Still, that game had sell out written all over it. Then tonight, Cavs were in Toronto, and while there were still quite a few HS games, it was sectional play (meaning alot of mismatches). The Zips were coming off gut-punching b2b losses and playing a horrible team. Yet, 4,300 show up. I'm guessing a Saturday game brings 5,000. Luckily, the Cavs don't play next Friday and it's Kent, so it will still sell out (regardless of Friday vs. Saturday). Still, the four Friday games, IMO, will have probably cost 4,000 in attendance. But I guess it's not all bad considering they will still average nearly 4,000 for those games, and they get the exposure of being on TV. And to be honest, I'm actually stunned that tonight's game got 4,300. I was expecting to see another crowd in the low 3,000 range due to the recent recent losses. Maybe Joe Akron isnt as fickle as in years past (or as fickle as I was after the Miami debacle). In my defense, though, I have either attended/watched on TV/or listened on the radio easily 90 percent of the game's the past 10 years, and that Miami game was easily the low on-court-performance for me, considering what was at stake. And while the Miami game ultimately didn't cost us anything in terms of the league title, it eliminated any, albeit slim to begin with, chances to get an at-large bid, and it realistically slots the Zips in a 13/14 seed if they do get the NCAA bid. Plus, with the way things played out, the Zips would've clinched the regular season title tonight if they didn't lay that egg in Miami. Maybe my expectations are too high, but that crap still sticks with me despite the bounce-back against a team that is like death and taxes to the Zips under KD. 1981 grad
The Zips came out with a great deal of intensity and had 11 steals tonight. Reggie could not miss and had 21 points in the first half. We also outrebounded Bowling Green by 10 and they had only 3 offensive boards. We had 21 assist to 10 turnovers. Kwan really played well from the inside. It seemed like the team made a concerted effort to take the ball to the hoop. KD indicated that Jimond and Aron Jackson are back in the rotation and they both played 14 minutes. I think that is a smart move since I think at times this team looked tired at the end of the last 2 games. I liked it at the end of the game where they spread the floor and let Jimond drive on his man from the top of the key for an explosive dunk. I see him on the wing but I think he is much better from the top of the key when the middle is kept open. If we can bring the same intensity to the next 2 games we will win the MAC regular season. Go Zips!

I suppose getting on tv is worth it. Idk. I don't like competing with the high school games. There's nothing we can do about the CAVS, but we should complement the high school schedule, not compete with it. We want high schoolers at our games. I preferred it when we had our weekday games on Wednesday night. It worked much better. zippy5
It's sad if we're legitimately competing with high schools for attendance after 11 straight 20 win years of D-1 basketball.

Parents would rather go to their children's games and support them rather than Akron basketball probably, and they should support their loved ones. There are also some HS players and a few HS coaches that have obligations. Maybe a handful of fans would prefer high school basketball, but UA (and the rest of the MAC, this is happening everywhere this year) isnt really competing with high schools.

K92
Great atmosphere last night. I'd give a dollar to experience something similar in Infocision.
UA1987
I was there and was very impressed with just about everything, except the screaming kids behind me that were not into the game and that ended up tripping and landing on my back (almost smashed my friend's dolly that he got before the game). I'll take the little bastards though if I could see that atmosphere all the time (football and basketball). The Zips passed that ball around like the Globetrotters, found the open man, and made the shot. Played good D and great to see the hustle last night too. We made BG look pretty bad, which is always good considering some of their fans that have sat near me at football games. I have to say that was a first class event. Looking forward to the return of Pat and the rest of the season. Edited February 27, 2016 by UA1987
NWAkron
In the lower level, there were a lot of season ticket holders who weren't there last night. Most gave their tickets to others. Coach mentioned after game the last loss to BG cost us a conference championship. I don't remember that game. The last loss i remember to BG was at the Q when Hipsher was coach after we finally made it past the first round. Continue to hope chaos continues today for the rest of the MAC. But I have no doubt it will all come down to the Big Game on Friday for the MAC regular season championship.
akronzips71
Todays games will be very interesting. Either Toldedo or CMU will have 8 losses, eliminating one of them from winning the MAC Either Buffalo or Ohio will have 7 losses, meaning the best they could possibly do it tie us. KSU and Ball State can still have 6 losses each at the end of the day. Too bad we lost that last game, this would be over now.
akronzips71
To follow up: I think if Kent loses, Ball State loses, OH wins, we are the masters of our own fate. We beat Ohio, they can not catch us, we beat OH and Kent can not catch us, Buffalo is out, Ball State would be out. Of course, if we win out we are in, but in the above scenario all we have to do is beat OU.
NWAkron
"Watered down Akron" has ten 3 pointers and a 61 to 41 lead at half! I think it will be "blow out" weekend as opposed to "upset Tuesday" as these teams follow Akron's lead no matter winning or losing.
skip-zip
Here's the easiest way to look at it. Vs. Ball State - One more Akron win, or one more Ball State loss and that is over (we own tiebreaker against them). Vs. Buffalo - One more Akron win, or one more Buffalo loss and that is over (we own tiebreaker against them). Vs. Ohio - Beat them on Tuesday, and it's over because they'll be at least 2 games behind us with one to play. Vs. Ken+ - If we win on Tuesday, Ken+ needs to win ALL THREE of their remaining games to tie us, and win the league by virtue of owning the tiebreaker. So, here's the easiest path to the title right now..... Win on Tuesday vs. OU, and if Ken+ loses either tonight or Tuesday it's for the Zips on Tuesday night, and we're cutting down nets.
