UAZip0510
@ZipsMBB to play in The Savannah Invitational in November 2016. kreed5120
http://www.wjcl.com/news/sports/new-college-basketball-tournament-coming-to-savannah-in-november/157364340/story Edit: Nothing that I see makes me too thrilled for the tournament. It would pretty much be a true road game if we face Georgia Southern or Mercer. There are also a couple other teams in the Carolinas/Virginia region that will be playing. Akron going in I'd have to say is the best program on the men's side in what looks to be a pretty irrelevant tournament. gozips19
Participating men’s teams and conferences, which are scheduled to play Nov. 25-26, are University of Akron (MAC), the U.S. Air Force Academy (MWC), East Carolina University (AAC), Georgia Southern University (Sunbelt), Mercer University (SoCon) and Radford University (Big South). kreed5120
The tournament at UTEP is what I assume to be the Sun Bowl Invitational. In 2014, it featured UTEP, Kent State, Alcorn State, and North Dakota State. Edit: in 2015 is featured UTEP, Sam Houston State, Norfolk State, and UC-Irvine. It looks to be a tournament that is designed to give UTEP 2 extra home games vs. 2 mid-majors. http://www.sunbowl.org/system/documents/documents/6/original/Basketball_All-Time%20Results%20&%20All-Tournament%20Teams.pdf Edited March 27, 2016 by kreed5120

That's a horrible lineup. If we're taking a major downgrade in tournaments, we had better have a major upgrade for our home schedule. We should win that tourney, so maybe that's a sign that the staff's finally taking the team on the road for a few $$ games against name P5 schools? Let'sGoZips94
Any chance we can play in the women's bracket and at least play the Auburn/WVU names? The really sad part is the only team in the field that has an NCAA tournament win is Mercer (2014 against Duke). Win the stupid thing, bring home the trophy, and let it collect dust in the trophy case. This UTEP tournament field better be incredible, along with the rest of our OOC schedule. KD has repeatedly stated that our best chance at opening eyes is by playing 'name' schools on neutral floors. Many of the tourneys or 'classics' we have been in the last few years were actually put together by ESPN. Is it possible that ESPN just turned away from the Zips for this upcoming year? The last few years Akron was probably seen as the highest profile team in the MAC but now Buffalo has gone to the NCAA two years straight, are they getting the spots in ESPN tournaments that Akron had been getting? I think Akron needs to play teams like Air Force and East Carolina more often but in place of Coppin State and Bethune-Cookman, and not in place of Villanova, Arkamsas, or even UW-Green Bay. Still I am not sure how easy it is for the Zips to get into higher profile OOC tournaments.

Regardless if you feel Buffalo has emerged as ESPN favorite MAC school, I can guarantee you that there will be plenty of other MAC schools playing in better tournaments than this. One is not like the others... 2015 RPI numbers and record at end of regular season 34 Akron(25-8) 191 Radford(14-15) 194 Mercer(17-14) 218 E Carolina(12-20) 226 Air Force(12-18) 243 Georgia Southern(12-17) Edited March 28, 2016 by kreed5120
GJGood
I don't disagree. I am just saying that if we have fallen out of ESPN's good graces for the time being that we can't expect to play in as high profile tournaments as we have the last few years. That doesn't mean there aren't other quality events and teams out there. The other thing is not knowing in what order the teams accept invitations to these events. If you are the first or second team in you don't necessarily know who else will be in the event and once a big name jumps in I am sure that many teams come calling. so I could see a program having the choice of committing early and hoping for decent opponents or waiting until a decent name pops up but risking not being in the event at all. Like I said I don't know exactly how these things work but I would think scenarios like that probably happen. Maybe others here have more insight into how these out of conference tournament fields get populated, especially with respect to teams knowing who else may be in the tourneys at the time they commit to them. zippy5
Gotta wonder if maybe this is a favor to ESPN for getting in a couple nice tournaments the last few years. Otherwise makes zero sense.
kreed5120
I found a wiki page for the tournament. It says it's going to be an 8 team tournament with 2 teams TBD. Assuming that's accurate and assuming the 2 teams to be added are quality, I will be able to stomach this tournament assuming Akron faces them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah_Invitational
skip-zip
I'd count on TBD being 2 schools that they can find who are willing to fill the spots.
kreed5120
I could see it being appealing to a Georgia or Georgia Tech or some other larger school in the area. It's no Villanova, but it beats the crap teams that are there currently.

Why even be involved with this Tournament if you have basically average schools and one historically Poor Basketball School(E. Carolina). I KNOW that they can do better than this...... But, do you really think a program of any significance whatsoever is sitting out there right now finding this lineup to be attractive for them to want to be a part of it?
