ZachTheZip
Bernie Kosar said he was at the game. Regardless of what anyone thinks of his TV play-by-play abilities, he absolutely knows his stuff when it comes to the QB position. Hopefully he got a chance to talk to our QBs for a few minutes. 72 Roo
Amato is a good coach and we are lucky to have him. But he did not have the D ready to stop VMI. Perhaps he didn't want to show Wisconsin anything or perhaps he just had a bad day. Regardless, there is talent on the defensive side and I look forward to them getting better. It's a long season and this is a good team. They will be heard from before it's all over.
UA1987
After the VMI coach rampage at postgame, I don't think Bowden would appreciate seeing the Institute on the forward schedule as long as Wachenheim is around. VMI played a good game as I thought they would. The Zips have a lot of work to do. My concern (besides extra point and field goal kicking) is the interior of the defensive line. I was hoping Hamilton might be a Moses McCray type player for Akron, but I did not see him in the lineup. We need him to play.

zipsoutsider
I was more surprised by the 3 man rush, truthfully. Things started to improve when went to a 4 man rush.
Spin
It seemed to take a quarter or more to knock the rust off. Then it became a fun game.Nice crowd too. So, nobody knows how to fix the scoreboard, so they buy a new one and bolt it onto the old one? That's the kind of stuff you see at Division 6 high school stadiums next to long-closed steel mills. It's only 8 years old and they can't find anyone to fix it? Tacky.
zvillezip
I don't post here often but I do read frequently. I am a Zip grad in the class of 1993. I have watched a lot of Zip football since 1989. I understand everyone was frustrated by the penalties and defensive problems. I know that Amato and Bowden will fix the penalties and field discipline problems. The defense has talent and Gilbert was everywhere. Amato will have a better scheme for future games. He kept it simple for this one. As for the offense, all I can say is Wow. There is so much talent on this side of the ball. This is the most talent I have ever seen for the Zips. Ball is a beast and should have received more carries IMO. Woodson was awesome and the receivers are incredibly fast, big, and athletic. This will be a fun team to watch this year. Wisconsin is probably too good to beat but we surely have the ability to challenge them.
blueandgold
My observations from the game. Jamal Marcus could not be blocked. VMI's huge right tackle couldn't stop Marcus at all. He was in the backfield at will...and he isn't even 100%. Gilbert is going to be a real play maker for us. He was all over the place and showed similar speed to Jatavis with his ability to get into the backfield and run down the ball carrier. Our team defense looked worse than it really is. We weren't showing anything for Wisconsin to see. Our receivers could score almost at will on VMI. I felt that during most of the second and third quarters we were merely working on different offensive schemes and plays which lead to the miscues and many 3 and outs. If you noticed in the latter part of the 1st quarter into the beginning of the 2nd quarter we scored three quick TD's in a row. The same thing happened again in the 4th quarter. Warren Ball is the real deal. We just need to sustain blocks long enough for him to get through the hole. We need work in 3 phases of our Special Teams. Our return game was below average at best, our kickoff coverage was bad and our kicking game was terrible...at least early on. It sure felt like that. I would like to have seen Young or Smith get a couple if looks with Tommy throwing the ball. The chemistry with Lane, Wolf, and Natson with Woodson is remarkable. 13 minutes ago, blueandgold said: Our defense looked worse than it really is. We weren't showing anything for Wisconsin to see. This seemed true when I watched the replay. We weren't missing tackles and we almost seemed to be giving up short passes, intentionally. I also heard Bowden say that early in the season schemes would be simpler for new guys to learn the system. Brian Bell laid some nasty hits, too. 16 minutes ago, blueandgold said: We need work in 3 phases of our Special Teams. The exception to special teams would be the nice punt by Gasser to pin them back on their 2 and some nice kick-offs by O'Leary.

MDZip
The Zips have not yet been sent to the elimination pile for the Playoff. Every other MAC East team has. "Congrats, Zips. It's a little early to crown you MAC East champions, but you were the only team in the division not to lose its opener."

MDZip
Is it a good sign that a player could have 90 receiving yards and three touchdowns and not be highlighted as one of the offensive stars or the game? Dr Z
I don't know how many were able to watch the halftime show with Larry Williams and Bernie Kosar, but I thought it sounded well for the Akron program(s). When Bernie was asked about the Browns, he first talked about the Akron Football team, and then answered the Browns questions. Nice to have him around the program.
