Sorry for the late update!  Now updated for today's games.  It looks like the MAC is pretty much playing the Mountain West and C-USA this week.  Should be interesting to watch a few of the games to see how we stack up against these other G5 conferences as a whole conference.  Few observations:

 

Western Michigan: is playing it's second Big-10 team this week.  Could they be 3-0 with two wins over Big-10 teams?

Toledo:  Could be 3-0 with a home stand against Fresno state.  This is what the Zips should strive to be one day. 

Kent:  Playing they're second FCS team.  Blood is in the water, could Kent go 0-3 with two losses to FCS teams?

Don't know how many have seen this but it's a little crazy. Eastern kicked off from Charlotte's 20 yard line due to multiple personal fouls. Of course EMU tried an onside kick.

Wonder when the last time was that a MAC team was favored over an ACC team? CMU 6.5 over Virginia.

I thought I saw Bama was favored by only 43. Looks like Vegas is wanting to give people some free money this week. I say Bama by 50.

I don't think its as clear cut as you guys are making. Kent sucks bad and Alabama couldnt be farther on the opposite end of the spectrum, but I wouldn't be surprised if Saban took it somewhat easy on his alma mater and kept it in the 40s.

Maybe, but it's a stats driven world for the college football playoff and OSU, who is breathing down their necks bed out a better MAC opponent 77-10.

I can't believe that we will enter MAC conference play with two of our members accomplishing the following.

 

1) WMU with TWO WINS over the Big 10

2) CMU with wins over a Big 12 and (possibly) ACC school.  

3) Even Toledo, with two convincing wins over a more-reputable Mountain West school, and the school that's dominated the Sun Belt for the past 5 years.   

 

Yes, I know we've already posted all of the past wins against the Big 10, but can anyone document a time where there was one 3-week period where we had this many wins against "Power 5" schools?

Yep. I suspect the pinnacle for MAC football for those types of wins was the 2003 season. There was the huge MAC weekend on Sep 20th when NIU beat #21 Alabama, Toledo took down #9 Pitt and Marshall upset #6 Kansas State. For good measure that season BGSU beat #16 Purdue and Northwestern in a bowl game, Miami also beat Northwestern (and Cincinnati) and NIU also beat Maryland that season. Same season the Zips had their best chance at Wisconsin.

 

So that was the Big Ten, ACC, SEC, Big East and Big 12 all in one season. And four ranked teams. Don't believe anyone scheduled a PAC team.

 

And as far as beating two B1G teams in one season, the last time that was done? BGSU, last year. And in your statement above you left out Ohio's win over Kansas (yeah I know it was just after the KIPA (Kansas Ianello Pigskin Apocalypse)) but it still counts. Also have a feeling Ohio might be the main competition in the East this year.

I watched some of the OU/Kansas game last week. Kansas would finish last in the MAC. They are absolutely horrible.

I'm glad someone else remembered all of this.  Thanks for sharing.  I remember there was another year when the MAC had a good amount of significant wins, but I couldn't remember when it was.  Yes, that was also the same year that Charlie and the Zips came within inches of possibly scoring the upset over Wisconsin.   I'm glad to see the League making another push at some national notoriety.

If the MAC continues our success, we could be in a great position when the Big 12 expands.  With our ESPN contract, we might find some great programs looking for a home.

And Kansas may only be the second worst team in the Big 12 (Iowa State). Virginia also likely would finish in the bottom two or three of the MAC, so game Central Michigan should win easily if they are as good as what people think they are.

I think he's saying that with the Big-12 expanding, programs will try to move conferences.  As those teams move to the Big-12, others may look for a more stable conference with nice TV revenue or something of that nature, thus some decent teams might try to move to the MAC.  I think that's what he's saying at least.

Saw something today that the MAC has the 2nd highest G5 revenue. Only the AAC is higher, but nearly twice as high at around 1.5mil/team.

This is correct. And the difference isn't as big as it seems, since the AAC is flying their non-revenue teams all over the country.

I'm watching BG. Down 70-3 to Memphis with 4 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. Worst beat down ever. If the Zips don't win the MAC East, it's their own fault. KD is laughing at the cupcakes the Zips need to beat to make the MAC Championship game.

Wow what is going on? BGSU is absolutely awful, NIU lost to Western Illinois?!? Suffice it to say that last year's MAC Championship participants will not likely be returning. And Miami hung tough with Cincinnati and Buffalo who's looked awful beat previously-undefeated Army. The directional Michigan's are now a combined 10-2. And the Zips have offense and no defense. Wrong is right, up is down, dogs and cats are living together.
