Game 6—Miami (OH) Redhawks

Miami is 0-5 on the season. Most of their losses have been pretty close, but one of the losses was also to a FCS team. I'd suspect they may be near the bottom 10 ranking if they aren't already there. Looks like they had a freshman start at QB vs Ohio yesterday in his first action this season. If I recall, they had a nice freshman QB last season. His status is worth keeping an eye on.

Hopefully with it being homecoming and all, we pull a good crowd.

If the weather cooperates, there's usually some people at this game who wouldn't normally come to a game, such as those associated with the homecoming festivities, and some of the frats/sororities that try to organize alum "reunions" around homecoming weekend.  It's just always hard to figure how much that will impact overall attendance, since some of the older fans tend to start "no-showing" more as the season progresses, especially if it's colder.

Like everything else around Akron, so much more could be done surrounding Homecoming.  Other schools seem to do a wonderful job of creating a homecoming theme, and getting alums in attendance.  I think it's part of the "disconnect" that Akron alums have, compared to similar schools  Going "back to campus" for the weekend is something that alums look forward to every year at places like OU and Miami.  Our alums don't have that desire.

As an example, here's the All Roads Lead Home festivities at OU this week, which even includes a parade.

Most schools make homecoming a big event. At UA it's kind like, "Hey. it's homecoming" Let's go to the bar.

TBH,  when I was a student I didn't even care about it either. But I also went to every home game when I wasn't working and 1-2 away games every season too. Even after I graduated I continued to go up until I moved 10 years ago. Now we come home every year at Thanksgiving and I hope there is a home game or close enough road game to attend.

I wish we could count this Saturday's win before it happens :D

It's only 5 straight.  UMass, Miami, Buffalo, Kent...and then Kent again.

My bad. But, when was the last the Zips could count that many consecutive MAC wins?

I think those injury lists know less than the collective of this board.

Hopefully, the defense is spending the week practicing tackling drills.

If tackling was their only problem, the defense would be fixable. They are just so undisciplined. There are countless times this season where a Zips LB got caught eyeing the QB in the backfield only to have a RB come out of the backfield and run right past him. We have been eaten alive on misdirection plays. A lot of this can hopefully be fixed with time and experience, but it is incredibly frustrating to see the same mistakes play after play; week after week.

Edit: If we can't become a lock down D, we need to find ways to create turnovers.

Based on what happened last week, if true, I do not know if this helps....

Hustle Belt is usually a pretty reliable source but I don't know who provided them the information that the Zips defense "is one of the best in the conference". I do expect the Zips should win this game. And if we can get a few of our injured starters back (especially Woodson) I think it should come down to the final game of the year against Ohio. Nobody in the East scares me but everybody in the west does. :)

Yeah, I quit reading as soon as I saw this. They clearly haven't watched the Zips play this season nor did a simple google search to see the Zips are conceding 37.6 ppg, which is tied for 112th in the nation.

Edit: I guess compared to BGSU they are "good".

Kreed, you make a great point. Our D is undisciplined. i don't know how you solve that other than practice, experience and accountability. They are not as bad as they look if they execute the scheme. The tackling is so obvious as a weakness. I hope they work on it daily. If the D matures faster we may be able to make a run at the west that has three damn good teams.

It's hard to find the line between undisciplined and inexperienced. The defense off sides penalties have mostly gone away so there is some improvement. They are also more aggressive in swarming the ball than they were in the first 2 games of the season. Actually, Moore's hit on the Marshall QB was a bit of a turning point in terms of aggressive play for the D, IMHO. They have a long way to go, and I am not sure how far they will get there this season, but there is some improvement. they were able to make big stops in the last 2 games - not every time we needed it, but at least some of the times.

Miami's starting QB will be out, again. http://www.hustlebelt.com/2016/10/4/13162920/freshman-noah-wezensky-start-qb-miami-ohio-football-jack-sorenson-wr-emergency-backup

Zips face uncertainty at QB position heading into big Miami-O. game.

The article also discusses the emergence of UG5 as UA's next great LB.

Gilbert, who has 55 tackles including seven tackles for loss, turned into a wrecking crew against KSU, delivering 16 tackles and three tackles for negative yardage.

"Zips fans can look forward to more uncertainty. Coach Terry Bowden said during his news conference on Tuesday that Woodson, who threw on a very limited basis, has not been ruled out for Saturday’s game against Miami University. Bowden said he feels comfortable putting the offense in Chapman’s hands again."

If Woodson can't play this week, and he plays against (ranked) WMU next Saturday, he will not have thrown a meaningful pass in 21 days. Let's hope he can go this week.

Notes from the above presser, if someone didn't want to spend 30 minutes watching. I'll paraphrase these.

• We run the same offense with either QB, we may emphasis two or three specific plays for one or the other.

• Zach Guiser (safety) is the QB of our defense. We may mix others with him back there, but he is the constant.

• Wolf had hernia last year and he is now healthy and getting his speed back.

• Kato is in a great position, he is the third QB, gets varsity reps, and has the ability to red shirt. He looks good, throwing, running and has smarts.

• We are better at successful big running plays this year. Pleased with the offensive line's progression and potential. Too many holding calls, but they should get better with time, and everybody returns next year.

• Said Jatavis would be the best value in draft, seems true. They use Jatavis as the example of hard work, it's what seperates successful NFL players.

Bowden presser:

I love his remarks to GT about handing him the game plan.

As Bowden pointed there is a lot to be excited for in this offense as the O-line continues to progress both this year and next. This season could very well end up being Akron's best offensive year when everything is all said and done and it's crazy to think they could even be better next season. Sure they lose Natson, but they are amassing quite the stable of receivers.
