...Besides the money, the only thing we gain out of these games is a little attention.  I'll have people comment about our uniforms, our mascot, or that we have a funny name, or that one of our receivers is fast, etc.  But, you're giving way too much credit to these "weeknight football fans" around the country if you think they are in any way knowledgeable about the implications of any of these games.

And don't worry, he has it from an inside source,  ;)

That might be your personal preference, but I'd be absolutely astounded if internet-only games were even remotely comparable to TV games in terms of viewership. Let me just add this, while also addressing Kreed's last response: The "Joe Schmo" college football crowd sitting on their couches on weekday nights with their Busch Light beer in hand doesn't give a sh*t about Akron, App State, Buffalo, or Georgia State.  Many of them don't even know that it's a D-1 football game.  They flip through the channels looking for an entertaining football game to watch.  That's it.  End of story.  They don't even care about the outcome (unless they are gambling)  It's ludicrous to read into this much further and think that any significant number of these people know anything about what's happening in the MAC or Sun Belt, the current status of theri conference races, their players, their current record, or whether one of them gave a competitive game 8 weeks ago to a P5 team that everyone knew was overrated anyway.   If anyone thinks that these people are thinking "I have to watch this game...it's a pivotal game in the race for the Sun Belt title", I'll call you a little crazy.  Most of the nation, I assure you, doesn't even know (or care) about what's happening in Kalamazoo Michigan yet.Besides the money, the only thing we gain out of these games is a little attention.  I'll have people comment about our uniforms, our mascot, or that we have a funny name, or that one of our receivers is fast, etc.  But, you're giving way too much credit to these "weeknight football fans" around the country if you think they are in any way knowledgeable about the implications of any of these games.

Just by the pure fact that "MAC fans" will be watching OU-Toledo game as it is a bigger stakes match up would take away viewers from Buffalo-Akron. Anyone that is "Sun Belt fan" only has 1 choice for a game so it won't divide their fan base, Appalachian State actually has a legitimate following in its community unlike Buffalo or Akron. App State consistently draws crowds of 20k+ and has on numerous occasions averaged 25k fans per year. If you exclude the pop cans that Buffalo and Akron count to meet NCAA requirements, that would be more than both schools combined.

Edit: Stations don't make this decision thinking of redneck Randy as he will likely be watching one of the many other games on TV. Even if he stops on the station he would stop on it anyways. They think which game will bring more appointment viewer fans or which one has an opportunity to create an exciting finish that could get people flipping to it to see how it ends.. Appalachian State has a larger following and that game has higher stakes.

What football fan, who is not a fan of any of the teams involved in tonight's games, would go to the internet when there are already games right on TV?

WatchESPN is right on my tv.

WatchESPN – available to 93 million homes through every major multichannel programming distributor across platforms including computers, smartphones, tablets and connected devices – averaged 6.7 million unique devices and 1.3 billion minutes per month, up 3% and 22%, respectively (source: Adobe SiteCatalyst). WatchESPN recorded its top 15 highest audiences ever for Monday Night Football, top five regular season college football games.

I think you're still reading into way too far, although I completely agree that MAC fans and Sun Belt fans will take some interest.  Stations are all about total viewership.  Period.  That's how they attract advertising dollars.

But regardless, you did entertain me with the Redneck Randy reference.  I'll have to remember that one.

I'm glad you like to entertain yourself.  Maybe if I was 30 years younger, and was embarrassed and looking for redemption because I disputed a report on injuries that ended up being correct, I might decide to act just like you.  But I'm not here to amuse myself.

Like I've said many times here, if some people would use this board as a source of sharing information, instead of a platform for getting their immature kicks from being confrontational, we surely wouldn't have lost most of the people we've lost here.

But please, feel free to carry on.  Have a nice day.

I do agree total audience matters. I just see the Sun Belt game in this particular case bringing more of their own fans to boost that number. I also expect Akron to light up the scoreboard against a very poor Buffalo defense. Random people that do tune in will flip to a more competitive game before the start of the 4th. The App State game is only a 5 point spread so it is expected to be a 1 score game so people may watch it all the way through.

break the buzz kill this forum has become! Its GAME DAY for a WINNING football team that's about to beat the ibulls (yes I meant ibulls) to be the cherry on top of being bowl eligible for the 2nd straight year.  Our progrum has been resurrected and we get to laugh at death on the other sideline!

Thanks for the data.  You would have answered my question if it would have provided a comparison between internet-only broadcasts, and TV games, rather than how much ESPN3's viewership itself has increased.

I agree with you on this.  In fact, I surely do hope our game becomes uninteresting by the 4th Q.

Do whatever you want on here. It's your posts.  Have fun.

And I am not embarrassed nor looking for redemption.  I am very justified in my criticism of your "sharing".

You certainly think very highly of yourself, except you don't post information, you don't share anything.  You share rumors and allude to things.  That doesn't benefit anybody, it doesn't benefit the fan, it doesn't benefit the player.

There is a reason Bowden doesn't talk about injuries, and it doesn't make one bit of difference to worry about your hearsay and speculation; except to go back to our "Whoa is me!" mentality.

I think skip is underestimating the people that have cut the cord and use WatchESPN

You need some sort of subscription to view WatchESPN. I have Playstation Vue (Kind of a hybrid between cutting cable and keeping it) which lets me have 70+ cable stations (including ESPN) for $35/mo. I pretty much use my PS4 as my cable box. To my knowledge there is no way to view WatchESPN for free unless you have a friends log-in.

The spread is now up to TWENTY POINTS.  Have the Zips EVER been 20 point favorites on the road against a I-A/FBS opponent?

I'm smelling another DeAndre Scott pick six, much like the way the game started the last time they played "inside the running track" (doesn't quite sound as poetic as "between the hedges" does it?).

It works and I use it when I'm not at home or the game isn't on cable. I will watch the game on ESPNU, ESPN, or ESPN2 if I'm at home via my VUE before I'd log into watchespn however. I just don't call it cutting cable as I still pay for a bundle of channels. Difference now is I'm paying $35/mo now instead of the $70-$80 that I was previously.

I am hoping for a beatdown tonight.  Not just a normal everyday beatdown but a scorched earth war of annihilation beatdown.  Does anyone deserve a thrashing at the hands of the Zips more than the University that hired Rob Ianello?

No.

I hope this is tonight's soundtrack:

RE: ESPN3/cord cutting - yes, you need some type of subscription, but in some cases, it is just an Internet subscription. Also, you used to be able to get it through Xbox Gold - is that still true? In any case, there is a big move towards streaming versus TV and it is especially true with millennials and the younger Gen Xers.

I think the Zips are ripe to pull off a beatdown.

We've come from just hoping to get a win to hoping for an a$$ kicking.

Lets hope in a few years we are feeling that way towards Toledo, NIU and WMU too

Great perspective.
