zzx Posted June 3, 2017 Author Report Posted June 3, 2017 (edited) Robbie Kelley has 2 years of eligibility remaining after transfer from Quincy University Plans to pursue MBA Edited June 3, 2017 by zzx Quote
skip-zip Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 Who knows how good he is. But he looks physically strong, and his height/weight are ideal to me for a QB. Quote
Dr Z Posted June 3, 2017 Report Posted June 3, 2017 The coaching staff is very excited about Robbie. Apparently this kid was very small coming out of high school and just kept growing. There is a coach relationship on the Quincy program. I'm drawing a blank as to what coach Bowden told me yesterday. Somebody on Akron's staff coached with somebody on Quincy's staff somewhere (NC State maybe) and was told about this kid. The staff is trying to avoid what happen to the team last year. As many fans realize, the QB position injuries (among others) devastated our team last year, this will not be the case in the near future. BTW, lots of football notes coming from yesterday's golf outing. We are still comprising our notes. Look for a separate topic sometime this weekend. 4 Quote

Nice of that coach to do what was in the best interest of his player and give him a FBS opportunity. You have to think he is sacrificing his own team's future for the good of Kelley. He has graduated in May so he doesn't need to be released by his old program, he is free to go. Quote

I think what he is saying it that it is good for the coach to help get the kid a D-1 offer, which is what I take from the mention of the relationship with the Quincy staff and ours. Quote
kreed5120 Posted June 5, 2017 Report Posted June 5, 2017 Seems kind of late to be adding a QB. Wonder if this is any indication the staff isn't 100% sold on Kato or Johns? Quote
Let'sGoZips94 Posted June 5, 2017 Report Posted June 5, 2017 He has a fantastic build - 6'3" 220 lbs. I like how he hits receivers in stride, and seems to place it in the right place where only the receiver can get it. Looks composed in the pocket as well. Interestingly enough, it looks like he was set on going to Butler (tweeted that he will be attending Butler to further his academics and football career on April 24th). The more competition for a position, the better. Best man plays. Period. Quote

The more competition for a position, the better. Best man plays. Period. I'm with you on all of this above. I like his size and build, if it's legit. Of course, I'm not impressed that he was being pursued at a lower level (Quincy to Butler?). I wish it was a I-A transfer. But he appears good enough to compete. So, you're right. Get him in here and see what happens. This "loading up" on Quarterbacks shouldn't disappoint anyone after the depth problems we encountered last year. And quite often, you end up finding good athletes that can possibly help somewhere else. We've done that many, many times in the past. Edited June 5, 2017 by skip-zip Quote

Still, the coach helping him leave Quincy is good for Akron, but not good for Quincy. I'm sure Quincy would still like to have him as their QB, but it probably isn't what is best for him. Quote

It's June, which seems like a perfect time. There is no indication at all, like I wrote above, the staff is trying to avoid what happen last season when they lost QB's to injury and had to play an unexperienced player at the position. Kelley's signing gives the Zips a QB in each class now. It's hard to argue that the Zips aren't better at the QB position going into the year. All that being said, I hope Woodson takes every snap this year. Quote

I thought I read somewhere that the staff had originally planned to bring in one qb per year. I think Robbie is #3 for 2017. Quote

I think Robbie is #3 for 2017. This topic arose last week at the golf outing. The team philosophy is not to bring in one QB per year. The ideal situation is to have one QB in each graduating "class." The Zips now have a true Fr., redshirt Fr., Soph, Junior and Senior QB on the roster. So mission accomplished, I guess. Quote

Also explain that a team is not penalized for throwing to him. i don't think that's very clear in our OC's mind. 1 Quote
