There's always the law of unintended consequences. It could be a lot of vomit to clean up in the car after the ride home.

I'm not letting them pig out, but saving $20-30 on some hot dogs, a popcorn, and some pretzels is a very nice offer. I'd definitely be more willing to bring my family to games knowing there won't be an additional cost to the $50+ spent on tickets.

I was listening to ESPNU in XM this morning. The two dimwits that come on before full ride were talking about spring practice and how the NCAA made a mistake by not allowing colleges to practice and play against one another. It was like listening to the morons 25 years ago who convinced universities to bankrupt themselves for athletics. They pulled out the same old arguments about the money spent would be an investment because the "exposure" would pay for it. They even pulled out one of the newest arguments that is complete crap but is a buzzword these days..... the scrimmages would reduce injury. I'd say more of the arguments, but we've heard them a thousand times.

The bottom line is this. If colleges eliminated spring practice, they would be doing everyone a favor, including fans. It's horrible entertainment and any decent player isn't really put through the paces because they a fearful of injury.

Yeah, Danny Kanell is a former FSU QB. He is also a complete douchebag. I refuse to listen to anything he does.

Coastal Carolina single game tickets are close to $30 for their cheapest seat if I recall. Akron's is something like $15. It's not just the cost of a hot dog and a bun to consider. Those people working the concession stands, working the gates, security, and other game day personnel cost money. We're already losing money hosting games. Giving away unlimited free food just puts us further into the hole.

If they wanted to add $5, $10 loaded value to tickets that way someone could use it to buy a beer and/or a hot dog then sure. Akron just doesn't charge enough for their tickets to also be serving as a Golden Corral. Besides, isn't that supposed to be one of the perks of club seats? If you provide that same service to all the fans, suddenly some may begin to ask why they're paying $150 (or whatever they cost) a game for their tickets.

I wonder if we do lose money hosting games. Wouldn’t think it would be that expensive.

I believe the athletic department is charged something like $4 million for the stadium while the school pays the rest. If you take $4 million and divide it by the 5 home games (which is what we typically host), we need to generate $800k revenue per home game just to pay the mortgage. I wouldn't even begin to guess what the other costs add up to.

I feel a lot depends on what costs you choose to include or exclude. If you include stadium costs, we're in deep red. If you exclude it, someone who actually seen the books would have to weigh in.

Yeah makes sense. I’d personally exclude the stadium. Also don’t think entire cost should get allocated to football team if you do include it.

It's almost as if you could run a test to see if giving away Item X for nothing would draw a bigger crowd than giving away Item Y for nothing.

Instead of giving away food in order to sell tickets, couldn't you give away tickets to sell food? Is the goal of the promotion to move food or move people to the game? If the goal is to move people from their living rooms to the game, incentivise the ticket and not the food. Once get someone into the stadium, you have them captive. Heck, college football games last forever now. It isn't unreasonable to assume that at some point during the marathon game experience someone is going to get hungry or thirsty.

I don't know if this could be a lost leader strategy or not, because the lost leader strategy assumes a profit will be made. It's sort of like one though.
