A few things stood out. He mentioned Terry had his best game and earned some more snaps. Talked about Fish and McCoy briefly. Noted Griffin has been playing on special teams and liked what he saw out of him. I think Joe said we may see Murphy in some goalline sets. Also said the freshmen OL outside of Landers will likely redshirt.

Surprised Joe did not correct him when he kept saying Whigan and Williams on the left side. Those two have been our RG and RT all year. Has brought up several times lately how much our OL has improved in pass blocking but is still working towards run blocking.

Said Price got stronger as the game went on.

Next to nothing was said about the secondary.

As I was watching the highlights it reminded me how many times we were able to get ahead of the chains defensively on 3rd down and then let them out. I imagine 3rd down play calls were scrutinized this week.

One of the key reasons for Irons' impressive production was Ohio's defensive strategy. Virtually the entire Bobcat starting secondary is out due to injury, so they have several players in positions they've never played before.  They tried to limp through the Fordham game but got scorched for 400+ yards passing, including several long TD throws.  They shifted their strategy in the Kent game to give receivers a 5- to 10-yard cushion and prevent anyone from getting behind them.  If you look at the replay of the Zips game, you'll see there was zero bumping/tight coverage at the line -- all to keep the ball in front of the secondary rather than get beat long.  The only way this strategy works is if your offense can score at a faster rate than your D gives up points.  It almost worked against Kent and did work against Akron. If Ohio can get some starters back, tbey could be really good.  Otherwise, they look like a 6-6 team to me.

I get what you’re saying but regardless of the injury situation, Irons had a whale of a day. Every team is dealing with injuries at this point and if Ohio doesn’t cross train their DBs, then that’s something their coaches should probably address. I rarely listen to television announcers but the crew made sure to keep saying how depleted Ohio’s secondary was. We’ve been without arguably our best CB since the Tennessee game and basically have a whole new secondary, yet I don’t see many people bringing up that point after teams torch us.

To expand on the “cushion” statement, Ohio played tighter on the boundary side and more loose on the field side. In essence daring Irons to make those long cross field throws that are not easy to complete and Irons completed them consistently. He delivered the ball on time and with accuracy to give his WRs a chance to make a play. That’s about all you can ask for no matter who the opponent.

I believe your observation about your offense scoring at a faster rate than your D gives up points will be true a very high percentage of the time regardless of the quality of your DBs. Obviously it may not be true all the time because your D could also score points via pick 6 interceptions and safties, but still a very high percentage of the time you are right on the money.

I didn't see the game but got the impression that's exactly what our secondary is doing - giving lots of cushion so as not to get beat deep, thus allowing lots of underneath completions and the ability for receivers to break open easily.

BTW, if Hooks is a Sr. and won't be back, is it time to start giving some of his PT to someone else?

Its a conundrum. He clearly gives us the best chance to win since he's out there, and I think you want to be as competitive and win as much as you can at the collegiate level. Unlike the NFL, you dont get rewarded for losing, and losing is going to hurt in recruiting (both keeping the players you want and bring in the players you want).

Looking at the roster, I don't see a promising young player like you might have at other positions to take his place (think Landers, Golden, McCoy). Cam Threatt would be the only option, but I'd imagine the staff gave him every chance to take that spot considering he was rated well by recruiting services and had the relationship with Moorhead. He also hasn't flashed in his time so far. One would've hoped a mix of Golden Nelson/Threatt/Amankwaa would have held down the starting positions this year, but 2 of the 3 have been mostly hurt and one not impressing with their play, forcing us to basically use Hooks, Hence, and Durant.  We are pretty thin at the position. There are only 2 other scholarship options - Chu Ogbonna (R Sr) and Ronald Jackson (played a little under Arth but dont really recall seeing him play at all this year).

Lewis has obviously been a nice surprise, but I don't think he's an outside corner and believe he mostly hasn't been playing it. This position should probably be the #1 focus in the transfer portal.

Well said, my friend. I’m not going to say we don’t have the horses between the players you mentioned, but for whatever reason(s) our horses can’t find their way out the stable right now.

we have a few horses, we need a stable (depth). You don't win in college football with 6 or 7 good players on each side of the ball

Yes, productive depth is needed. Unfortunately, even our starters at defensive back are not consistently productive.

I don’t want to discard this season as these guys can still improve (Thompson is a great example of that) but if we are looking forward, there are some talented freshmen incoming and we’ll probably pull a few more DBs out of the portal. We weren’t in a position to have Golden-Nelson get hurt along with Hooks and Threatt playing below their ability this year.

Assuming he’s able, I’d like to see Hooks return and have a full off-season with this staff.

They don’t give any reasons behind their selections but hard to argue with that list…at the moment. A win Saturday would change things.

It’s interesting to see how all those teams are struggling but for different reasons. New Mexico State doesn’t have much of anything, but they have a freshman QB who can sling it. South Florida will probably fire Jeff Scott, who I’m not friends with but ran in some of the same circles for a period of time. Colorado State is determined to throw the ball but they don’t have much of a QB. Charlotte has one of the worst defenses I’ve seen. UMASS is rebuilding but don’t seem to be making a ton of progress on the recruiting trail. Hawaii will probably stay a 💩 show if the rumor is true that the HC doesn’t have full control over who is on his staff.
