Athletic Budget

Channeling the departed member GoZips here. The best scenario for UA would be to drop football down to D-3. Leave the MAC and join the Big East for all other sports. If we can continue to grow our NIL program for Basketball we would be a good fit. The BE would gain access to another media market. Good enough to compete but not currently a threat to the current members. Imagine the crowds we would draw at the JAR. The BE has a great media contract which would more than make up for any football dollars we recieve now. Even after paying the debt on the football stadium we would still be dollars ahead. Go back to playing Mount Union etc..

You can't be in the Big East and D-3 football

The best scenario would be for Akron to get the dumpster fire of the football program moving in a way that would draw people to the University by making it a benefit to the athletes students alumni fans and general community around Akron. It's a public institution, not an athletic department. It should benefit the citizens of Ohio and it simply isn't.

It's not a cultural fit. They would never accept us. Excluding UConn, which they have history with, the Big East is made up of Private (predominately Catholic) schools. We're a public university. If we were a Private University, like Case Western, that might be a possibility.

Dollars rule supreme though. It's a business decision, not a cultural one.

I prefer the Football Forum to be about football (opponents, games, recruiting, et.), and not taxes and department budgets so I've moved the "Athletic Budget" topic to "Other Sports".

But this is a real conversation alumni should have isn't it? Is Our Program actually worth it? Because we're not just sports fans, we're also alumni of our University. And it's more than appropriate to be having in a thread called *checks notes* Athletics Budget.

You can wear out 34 keyboards here, if you'd like. Discuss the Athletics Budget until the cows come home. I pay for this forum so you can do so.

The Football Forum is for coaching, game, opponent and recruiting discussions. *Checking my notes* - Not for discussing the athletics budget.

Sure it's a cultural one. There is a reason why the Big East is all private schools, excluding UConn. That's how the conference presidents, who have a vote, want it. If this was the Big 10 or SEC I would agree with you as those conferences only care about the money.

Cultural differences nearly destroyed the Big East in the past. They won't go down that road again.

Look down the road to Canal Park and see what the Rubberducks are doing every summer. It isn't perfect, but there's at least an effort.

Minor league baseball became “fun” for the whole family. There’s things for the kids, things for young adults, even us old farts. The games are fun. It’s added entertainment for the time and money you’re paying.

You can still have a good time when your team is eating s***.

Why not have trivia contests, where fans text the answer? First correct answer wins a coupon for a free meal? A ball cap? It costs nothing, and gets people thinking about their school or alma mater or the local college team.

What other ideas do we have to break the stigma of being a community college in the shadow of The OSU?

So your problem is with the OP, not with my response. Perhaps you should redirect that statement at OP and not me. I merely responded to a thread, and responded to your response to that thread. That's fair game in any measure of a public forum. Nobody asked for you to respond to the "Athletic Budget" post, but it's perfectly fair game to respond to anything you say in it.

The fact remains: Alumni SHOULD be invested in discussing these things.
