I think Friday night is a huge game for us. We gotta get something out of that. We gotta get momentum in the Big East. Non-conference, we have been excellent. We gotta bring that to conference play.

Well, last night was not good. Once we scored to bring it back to 2-1 we played 40 minutes of unthreatening soccer

The 2nd goal given up was from us pussyfooting around in front of our own goal... again.  We've been doing too much of that for years & it's not been healthy for my blood pressure.

A competitive contest with the better side winning.

Zips dominated the first minutes of the match before a PK was awarded - after a prolonged VAR.
Hoyas converted the PK and took both the lead and control of the game.
Minutes later, Zips conceded a cheap goal resulting from slopping possession along the back line.
Game was pretty much decided in the first half.

Akron rallied in the second frame as Thomas O’Rourke smashed in a lefty to close the gap. But the energy expended was more than the Zips could sustain.

Final analysis is that Akron 2026 is very good but they are not quite elite. To contrast, Georgetown is a legitimate contender. Zips need to change some things and/or get lucky to overcome a side like Hoyas. Even so, do not be surprised should these two meet again this year.

I agree with this analysis by the eminently qualified fknbuflobo. The better team won. We are nor at their level. They had no weaknesses and to beat them we had to play a perfect game. We were not capable of doing that. We can do better though. This game showed us what level we needed to sustain to go deep in the playoffs. I do not feel we have found the best 11 to do that. The process continues and the coaches have to figure it out with the talent we have.

I agree with 72 Roo that we have not found the best 11 or at least the best 11 in the best places. Do not consider myself an expert but it appears we are at mid season and still trying to figure out the best lineup. This has happened several other years lately. It appears from this layman's eyes that Akron is too predictable in its attack and missing chemistry or something that they have shown in other years. It is difficult to play Akron's style rather than the power approach of Maryland and that Indiana has played. But- we have been told that the team is loaded with talent/options, we have more depth than ever. We seem to be missing the effective and appealing offensive strikes from our outside back players that has been a hallmark of past Akron teams.

Couldn't find the original thread on our transition to the Big East. Is our Big East affiliate membership indefinite or is a fixed number of years since we joined in '23?
