Glad to see Channel Banks get his shot back. That could win a number of games for us this season. Surprised me to see Ali Ali with the start. As mentioned above, he's an unknown commodity due to the lack of recruiting information on him/video of him. He's quite composed for a true frosh & obviously has the proverbial 'high basketball I.Q." He's long & athletic & can handle the ball well for someone 6'6" - 6'7". Looks like Tre Edwards will be the redshirt of the class. Personally, I was also surprised to see Camron Reece with the start over Riak. But Cam Reece is a beast. Not to put too much pressure on him and say he's our next Tree, but... he kinda reminds me of Tree. Deng Riak, as someone mentioned above, is precisely the same player we saw last year. Next to no PT for Jayden Sayles. Greg Tribble is very athletic. He's going to have to work on his 3-point shot. LePear Toles in street clothes. Sad to see. Looks like his playing days are completely over. I was looking forward to possibly seeing him get a little PT last night. Tyler Cheese is still the best player on the floor. Check that. Best player on the floor is probably X. Man, is he smooth for someone 6'9". Has a nice 3-ball. Cool, clam & collected. He plays like a senior. LCJ, Banks, Cheese, Reece, X. When that group starts to gel after Christmas, man, that'll be a handful for anyone. Malone had a really good forward named Sehill Mouliom from Paris, France. There has to be an interesting story there as to how he wound up at Malone. He finished with, I think, 23 points. But that was one aspect of the game where it was obvious Akron's coaching staff was treating this game more as a scrimmage; they refused to double-team Mouliom on the block, allowing him 4-5 dribbles to get his shots off. If Akron were concerned with making defensive adjustments during this game, I'd have to assume they'd instantly double down on Mouliom & get the ball out of his hands on the block. But Malone ran a really nice offense, looked well-coached, and, IMHO, acquitted themselves quite well. It was a fun game. It's always difficult to get an accurate read on the team during that annual first game (typically against Malone, Walsh, Mount Union, etc.). I usually enjoy those first games because everyone gets to play. But 1) you can tell the Akron players aren't 100% engaged, and 2) it looks like Groce is hoping to play the entire bench anyway. I'm excited about going 10-deep, but doing so will probably mean it'll take a bit longer for the team to gel & for the coaching staff to find the right on-court combinations.5 points

I still have no idea what the current tiebreakers are for MAC Men's Soccer, but apparently they favor Akron... https://gozips.com/news/2019/11/5/akron-earns-right-to-host-mac-mens-soccer-championship.aspx AKRON, Ohio - On the strength of a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday, Nov. 2, the University of Akron men's soccer team has earned the right to host the 2019 Mid-American Conference Championship, Nov. 15-17, at FirstEnergy Stadium. The top-seeded Zips will welcome the conference's best squads to FirstEnergy Stadium for first time since the 2016 campaign when semifinal matches are contested on Nov. 15, and the championship match on Nov. 17. Akron will host the advancing team from the Nov. 12 quarterfinal match between the fourth and fifth tournament seeds on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m., while the No. 2 seed battles the advancing squad from the quarterfinal showdown between the third and sixth seeds at 3 p.m. The advancing teams from the semifinal contests will vie for the league's automatic NCAA bid in the title match on Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. ...2 points

We aren't arguing, we're looking for solutions, which is what I wish more of us were doing. If the program is in this shape in 2-3 years, it is in grave danger. Meanwhile, many of us are defending past decisions and hoping or expecting Arth to turn this thing around. Those who are might as well be just praying to the football gods, and that is exactly the kind of thinking that got us in this position for the second time in less than a decade.2 points

I was confused by this too, here's why the Zips are already the champs Tie breaker for MAC soccer teams 1. Between TWO teams: A. Head-to-head competition B. Division Record (10 games)^ (note: irrelevant for men's soccer) C. Winning percentage* vs. ranked conference teams (top to bottom, regardless of division, vs. common opponents regardless of the number of times played) D. Coin flip So the worst the Zips can end is 3-1-1 and the best either WMU or SIU-E can end is also 3-1-1 (but not both because they play each other). If SUI-E ends 3-1-1 the Zips win on head to head. If WMU goes 3-1-1 it drops to the highest team in the standings that you lost to. Since WMU lost to NIU and there is no way NIU can finish lower in the standings than WVU (since the Zips would have to lose to them in this scenario) that is where the Zips eliminate WMU so they are the regular season champs and host no matter what happens tomorrow. In any case glad to see the tournament back where it belongs ?2 points

Last year I was not in the fire Bowden camp but rather in the please replace Milwee camp. That being said I do think it is difficult to just say a new coach is terrible in year one unless it has to do with behavior and discipline. While I certainly cannot say I am a huge fan of the Arth hire so far I do think, as far as my own opinion is concerned, that the jury is still out and probably will be until the midpoint of next season. I will continue to support my Zips as always no matter who the coach.2 points

This will be WVU first game of the season so Akron's best bet is they come out rusty and we can jump on them early. I expect Akron to keep it interesting for the first 30 or so minutes with WVU pulling away in the last 10.2 points

West Virginia is a team that has had their season destroyed by injuries At the beginning of the season, they played to a 0-0 tie with a very good Charlotte team. In the MAC season, they have been forced to play without their 2 best players WVA is 6-7-2 overall and is 0-3-1 in the MAC opened their season with a 1-0 OT win at Monmouth 2nd game was 1-0 OT loss at Delaware 2-1 home win over Wright State 0-0 result at home with #12 (at the time) Charlotte 5-2 home win over then #15 ranked Coastal Carolina 2-1 win OT win at Cincinnati at that point of the season, WVA was 4-1-1 (since then they have gone 2-6-1) 2-0 home loss to Dayton 4-1 win....thrashing Ohio State in Columbus 3-0 home win over Penn that is their last win of the year....they have gone 0-5-1 in their last 6 games 4-1 loss at home to then #25 ranked San Diego (useless trivia...here...San Diego head coach is the father of Aodhan Quinn) 3-1 loss on the road to then #18 ranked N. Carolina (UNC has struggled in the ACC...they are 7-7-2 overall and play Syracuse tonight in ACC tourney...if Syracuse wins, UNC will not be in the NCAA tourney) 3-1 home loss to West Virginia 4-2 home loss to Northern Illinois 3-0 loss at Bowling Green 0-0 result at SIU-E after the SIU-E game, the WVA coach had these quotes: "What a performance from our team on the road," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "We're really, really shorthanded right now, missing arguably the two best players on our team, but our guys fought tooth-and-nail and were the better team for 110 minutes tonight. It's disappointing to not get the goal that we deserved but give SIUE credit for being resilient and defending well. I thought our kids showed up tonight. The resurgence has to start somewhere – this is a good place for it to start." here is what the SIU-E coach had to say about the same game "It was a tough, good college soccer game," SIUE Head Coach Cale Wassermann said. "West Virginia is a quality team. There were some ebbs and flows. I thought we were better in the first half and they were better in the second half. It was pretty even in the overtimes.1 point

I probably shouldn't have said midpoint but rather well into next season. That is when I would hope improvement is evident. I just don't always know how easy it is to read the non-conference part of the schedule and you really don't know much about the new year's teams. Certainly not sure how much knowledge we can gain if the Zips go to Clemson and lose 56-3. its also not all about wins and losses as long as the team seems to be more competitive and improving. My main point, though, was that I don't put a lot of stock in a new coach's first year. there were some who said Bowden would be terrible after his first year at Akron, others said he would be great. I think its safe to say he was neither. I remember how everyone loved Brookhart after leading the Zips to the MAC title in his first year but he was not the springboard everyone envisioned either. Just saying that you can't judge much by a first year. you hope to see a glimpse of the future in year two but can tell a lot more by the time year three comes along.1 point

For those of you going down for the game, the last time we played there, I got my tickets through the U of A ticket office and the seats we were assigned were ultra-nose bleed. But after the 10 minute media time out, they allow everyone to move down into the lower bowl and lower upper deck, so if you find your self in that position, wait it out!1 point

The game should be streamed here; WVU's athletics website. The game is blacked out in the AT&T Sports Network viewing area. I don't know what that is but I know it's not us.1 point

As far as guys we haven't seen before, X, Reece, Ali and Tribble. As far as vets, we saw LCJ, Banks, Cheese, Riak, Roscoe and Sayles. I think they'll be better than last year. They'll certainly score more points as they're pushing the ball much more. As for the new guys, X is really a stretch 4. He shot quite a bit from outside, though he was able to put the ball on the floor and go to the hoop. Reece was strong inside. I think we'll grow to like him as he's a real blue collar guy. Tribble and Ali did a good job of assimilating themselves and didn't hurt themselves by trying too hard. On the down side, they could be in trouble on the nights the 3 point shot isn't falling and the rebounding was really sketchy. Each team ended up with 26 rebounds, which shouldn't happen given the disparity in talent.1 point

I see Ali playing as similar to Deji starting for KD early in his career in a first game years back. Not a permanent thing but more of a test. I thought they looked sloppy and disjointed at times, but they looked to be trying a lot of things out. X and Reece look like they will be welcome additions. Banks seems to have his shot back. Riak is the same player as last year. Surprised by the lack of time for Sayles.1 point

It's a regular season game for Akron and an exhibition for Malone.1 point

Looking forward to this one between Simon Spelling's Medina Bees and St Ignatius. Very happy it is in my town ...1 point

Because Bowden was relieved of his duties for the sake of installing our next great coach, Arth. It is therefore impossible to dissociate the two. We are a severely cashed strapped university. The only responsible time to move on from Bowden would have been after his contract expired. And yes, if we had another season or two like the 2018 season, I would have been okay finding a new coach at that time.1 point

Guess I was lucky to be at the Darren Alcorn game and in Detroit for Getsty-to-Hixon. Honorable mention to the unforgettable Snow Bowl game vs. Kent. That was some crazy cold fun. ⛄1 point

39-30 at half. Groce can't be happy with defense. Too many points in paint for Malone.1 point

Zips 39-30 at half. Roscoe was last sub in. So far played 10 players. LCJ, Banks, Reece, Ali, X, Cheese, Roscoe, Riak and Tribble. Poor rebounding technique so far. Only up 19-17 in boards.1 point

Well it wasn't that the AD was tired of 9 win seasons even though that was the official excuse for his termination. Apparently Frank was scoring as much off the field as the team was on it which some of the higher ups found off-putting. Franks age may have greatly reduced that problem, but if not OU is one of the best places he could be.1 point

Bowden won games By this time every season under Bowden we had a chance to become Bowl eligible. Until Arth wins a game, he is not even in the conversation with Bowden.1 point

Going for two.... against a FBS school....at home.... and losing! Just kidding! I was at the MAC Championship game and I think that's my top moment. However, I was also at the 1992 Acme Zip Game where Darren Alcorn kicked a 57 yard fg as time expired to beat Toledo, I believe. That, was awesome!1 point

My wife and I were at that game. I was standing in the aisle at Ford Field throwing some'f' bombs before the final drive. NIU just ran out of gas and Hixon ran right past his defender. Still think Getsy was one of at least the top 3 'QB's in Akron history. Not the best athlete. But, he could run a game. Thanks Luke.1 point
