I think the fact that the AD can sit down and in two weeks come up with a plan to cut $4.4 million/23% of the budget is a pretty strong sign they've been living above their means and that there wasn't a lot of deep thinking or budgetary planning going on up to this point. I get that the COVID-19 crisis pushed this along but these are decisions that should have been on the burner for the last 3 to 5 years.4 points

Best wishes to those athletes affected and thanks for representing. Hopefully they can either finish out at UA or find another program they will like.3 points

Men's Soccer will not eliminated but the budget will be cut back substantially. In NET terms, Football will continue to lose 8x more than the school spends on soccer, based on the 2019-20 budget. If not for Infocision Stadium, football may well have been eliminated.3 points

I hate to admit it, but dre is right here ☝️. Akron has as nice of facilities, if not better, than pretty much every MAC team. The university has kept trying to throw money at football to solve its problems. The problem is we've had a poor string of ADs who have in turn have hired some pretty poor coaches. The blame should be on whoever hires the AD, which I'm guessing would be the BOT.2 points

At this point if I tossed Akron $5 mil they would find a way to mismanage it The problem is not $$$ Never has been2 points

The anti-football crowd has some similarities with the football crowd- they are both small and a minority.2 points

I think there are a lot more cuts out there. These are just the teams.2 points

"The men’s cross country team, the men’s golf team and the women’s tennis team will be cut, according to the university." We waited, watched, and learned that your "sources" were as suspect as we thought. ?2 points

I don't think this was the "I told you so" post you were hoping to write today, eh?2 points

If those 3 sports cost 4.4 million combined to run, they should have been cut 10 years ago.2 points

$4.4 should have been trimmed long ago--- it hardly seems enough now2 points

Just a couple things Akron has 19 programs Boys - Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Rifle, Soccer, Track & Field Girls - Basketball, Cross Country Golf, Lacrosse, Rifle, Soccer, Softball, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track & Field Not sure but maybe your considering indoor track & field as another sport but it isn’t 14 sports is the requirement to be D1, has to be either 7 boys & 7 girls or 6 boys & 8 girls per title nine Also, the MAC requires Football, boys & Girls Basketball & Volleyball, so these 4 programs are safe for some of you guessing volleyball & for some saying football is so bad we should consider abandoning it2 points

I think the administration has done an embarrassing job handling funds. Why on earth did we add a baseball team and a girls lacrosse team last year? At this point, we should eliminate baseball, softball, and lacrosse. I am a student still and nobody cares at all about any of those teams. People would rather read text books than go to any of those games. Students are passionate about soccer and basketball, sometimes football. Mediocrity is bred in the football program. I know the football players and the vast majority of them are lazy and undisciplined.2 points

I'm obviously a fan of athletics. That being said I can't disagree with everything those academia faculty are saying. Had we kept athletics spending in check the last 15-20 years, we wouldn't be in a position to make such drastic changes now. There is no way we should be supporting 20 D1 sports when we're only required to support 16.2 points

dustin fox has done color on several zips football broadcasts on espn3/+ the last couple years. Lets hope his ignorance is rewarded with no more games ever again. I believe UA must approve broadcast personnell .1 point

Kind of hard to defend football when we bought a mediocre coach to come in and win 0 games1 point

Not so much a savings for the conference, but a savings for the schools with bad teams. Nothing like capping your season with an expensive trip to get pummeled (one final time) by a top seed. Better for them to move on to next year.1 point

Dropping to FCS adds travel expenses to conference games. 14 programs flying to the Dakotas every year runs up a heck of a bill.1 point

From how I understood the wording is that 4.4 million figure doesn't represent 23% of athletics overall costs. It represents a 23% reduction in direct institutional support. Pretty much they subtracted revenue generated from overall costs then reduced costs by 23% of that.1 point

It’ll be used. Plus we have a club tennis team. Anything to keep people from getting fat I’m all for.1 point

The thing about tennis though is those courts can still be used by the students and community.1 point

Yep, especially since I don't recall seeing one article ever posted about cross country, tennis, or men's golf in my however many years frequenting this site. Then again I'm sure I'd be more relaxed in my finances if I was spending someone else's money instead of mine.1 point

I feel like 4.4 mil should be attainable without any groundbreaking cuts1 point

You're overlooking the fact that each student pays x-number of dollars in student fees that are to help cover the cost of athletics. If we have fewer students, we're collecting less in student fees. I'm not saying we should have cut athletics spending 23.7% just because enrollment fell 23.7%. I'm saying I don't feel we should have increased it 9.4%.1 point

Thanks Danny for the post. For me it’s not a soccer v football mentality. I’m just tired of the stupid decisions. $650k for Bowden not to coach and $350k to buy Arth out of his contract. Then the cost of Arth’s salary on top of that. All for a 0-12 season and an unwatchable product. Who approves these stupid decisions? People laugh at Joe Dunn recalling Gerry Faust and the football team interrupting Bob Huggins’ basketball team’s practices. To me, that’s a tragedy. Demonstrates how screwed up UA’s priorities have been. Treat a winning coach and his team like crap in favor of the one that has little chance of doing anything. Ugh. How about the golden ticket raffle too? It appears that to date 55 tickets of 700 have been sold. (645/700 remain if you click purchase). Given the prize, how much does UA stand to lose? i hope COVID will help them out and allow them to cancel that apparently money-losing, ill-conceived venture.1 point

My experience with the ignore feature is that I put people in the "ignore lounge" and eventually let them out. They then generally reward me by getting in the express line to get back in.1 point

If the MAC drops men's soccer, there are other conferences nearby that I believe would be happy to have a team of the Zips' calibre. Men's Soccer is one of just a few Zips' teams that would add immediate, significant value to another D1 conference.1 point

Panel approves soccer rules changes to align with international competition I don't understand why they didn't address 2 rules changes that could have made college soccer more relevant. 1. Clock should count up to 90 minutes 2. Limit the number of substitutions (maybe 6) and no re-entry.1 point
