  1. I couldn't agree more. I will never forgive Shaka Dumb for the pressing the Zips the entire game in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. We lost our point guard, Alex Abreu two weeks prior and then the day of the game - seven Zips were sick with the flu or had food poisoning. Shaka finally stopped pressing with less than a minute to go and up 40 points. He did this to Keith Dambrot, who WAS allegedly his "best friend in coaching." Shaka is trash.

  2. With everyone loading up with transfers, I just wonder if "true freshman" are the big losers in this new system of college basketball. Why recruit a high school player that may take a couple of years to mature and become a division one player. None of our frosh were major contributors and when it came down to crunch time in Cleveland in our final game they did not see the floor except for some terrible minutes by Nate. If you do hit it big with a frosh, he will be gone the following year in the transfer pool.

  4. From what I can tell (2¢) Bass hasn't been offered by anyone yet. I'd be extremely excited if we landed Bass. 6'4" big-bodied shooting guard with a scorer's mentality and has proven he can fill it up. I love Nate's athleticism but don't know if he'll ever develop that edge mentally, and Prather is a complete unknown (to us, of course - in Groce I trust).

  6. 100% correct. My dad taught at Akron for 40+ years and met Faust multiple times. Coach always made a point of walking over to him to shake his hand and say, "Hello Professor, good to see you".

  7. Fun Fact about Paul Brown. As coach for the Massillon Tigers, In 1940 they played Kent State in a scrimmage. Paul Brown's Tigers beat the Flashes 47-0.

  8. AKR 2-0 St. Bonaventure Very inhospitable weather! Strong winds gusted from the west throughout! Rain, sleet, and everything in between. Thankfully, the hail stopped before kickoff. 4-2-3-1 (ref Arsenal) Jason Shokalook was injured and did not take off his warmups, so Stefan Dobrijevic filled in nicely up top, playing the full 90. He stroked in a fantastic looping right-footed goal from the left corner of the box to the far top corner. Great. But Stefan also missed several other opportunities that, from the sideline, looked like pedestrian finishes. Dobrijevic arguably should have had a hat-trick. At least he got in threatening positions. Later in the first half, Josh Hallenberger scored a goal that (from my vantage point) looked like the exact same goal, from the identical spot, that Dobrijevic scored earlier. Halle put in a rock-solid shift, box to box. Though not the most talented on the squad, Joey Paulus is a joy to watch compete. He plays with a relentless and unquenchable fire. His linking play is greatly improved, and he is emerging as a team leader. Joey's left-footed shot is surprisingly powerful. He is obviously having fun out there. ZipsNation can hope for a strong Fall season from Paulus. For reasons undisclosed, Joel Sangwa did not take off his warmups. Mani Diop filled in and was the best revelation of the match. Impressive. Diop really plays a very similar style to Sangwe, calmly handling the ball, confidently tackling, and efficiently distributing. Diop will push for playing time soon, not to mention 2024. All in attendance, players, coaches, referees, fans, were bundled up for warmth. It was tough to identify, even at close range, those not playing.

  9. Did the players like Coach Jackson? Of course, or they most likely wouldn't have been here this past season with the way the transfer portal has been the past couple seasons. As for the timing, it's not like Guthrie let her go with any seasons left on her contract. He just simply said when her contract was up, it wasn't getting renewed. The personal situation with Coach Jackson was of course bad timing, but Guthrie can't let that get in the way if he believes that the program needs a change. I had to look at this from a different perspective because I know a ton of high school girls basketball coaches and have been on the sidelines for several years. I like Coach Jackson and hope she lands somewhere as an assistant coach and gets another head coaching opportunity again, but I had to look at this objectively. For those saying not renewing Coach Jackson was the wrong move, if a head coach of a men's basketball program would have a record of 55-56 through four seasons (with these conference seeds and tournament results below) and the 5th season went 17-13 overall (#6 seed in conference with a quarterfinal loss by 24 points), would anyone be upset if the AD didn't renew the contract for the men's coach? Year 1 - #8 seed and lost to #9 seed in First Round Year 2 - #8 seed and lost to #9 seed in First Round Year 3 - Did not qualify for conference tournament, Finished 11th in conference play (only top 8 in tourney) Year 4 - #3 seed, beat #6 seed in quarterfinals, lost to #2 seed by 39 points in semifinals. Expectations should be a part of every program, and it's evident here that Guthrie has high expectations for his programs. Even though I do like Coach Jackson the person, I have expected more out of her and the rest of the staff and have been disappointed most seasons, especially in conference play. I had to look at this objectively, and concluded I'm not sure how many programs would be content with those results above. If this was Groce, I'm sure plenty of people would be saying that we needed a change on the men's side after Year 3.
