  2. It's because fans want to apply professional sports to college. They don't understand the mission and consume too much of the idiocy ESPN pumps through TV and radio. Let's review. College athletics should benefit the athletes, students, alumni, fans and greater communities around their school. During KD's time at Akron he checked all five boxes. I'd provide evidence, but I don't think any intellectually honest person needs it.

  3. Quick update. I’m still working on getting our recent JUCO commitments (and the rest of the MAC) rated. Even if they are all given a 5.2 star, it would catapult this class above Toledo and into 3rd place. It would also place Akron in the top 100.

  4. I was in Amberg Germany last week for work. When I checked in to the hotel, I provided my ID to the desk attendant and she said "Oh, you are from Ohio? I went to college there for two semesters." Of course when I asked "Where?", she said "The University of Akron." I told her "Go Zips!" every morning when I left for the office. 😄

  5. Dambrot is a victim of his own success. If you could teleport back to 2004 and tell any Akron fan at the time of his hiring that he'd lead Akron to 3 NCAA tournaments and 9 MAC title games in a 13 year span, every single person would say sign them up. That's a level of consistent success that I doubt I'll ever see at Akron again during my lifetime. This whole if you're not first, you're last mentality that people try to argue in sports these days is just absurd. It's better to go to the MAC championship game and lose then lose in the semi or quarter finals.

  6. To his defense, he was probably pretty lit when he made the comment.

  7. Not at the 0 or 1 tech here, but man! I’ll happily take this kind of play.

  8. Apparently was a 2 year starter at NMSU, but stats don't really suggest that (who knows if they're accurate). Regardless, seems like a solid get based on experience, he'll have 2 years with us, and Kent, UConn, Ga Southern, and ECU offered him since entering the portal.

  9. With Clarke gone I just looked at the large number of players who have come and gone in the past 5 years without graduating and the number of players who have transferred into the program I think Tribble and Freeman will be our first 4 or 5 year players in Groce's tenure. This is an observation and not a criticism but I miss watching players develop as they go through their 4 years at Akron. It has been amazing to watch Freeman's development. I am a little disappointed in the Tribble is a great player but I thought he would develop an outside shot. He is a fantastic athlete and I thought Groce could teach an athlete to shoot. Because of the transfer rule we will rarely see 4 year players in Akron and each year we will have a 50% turnover in the roster. Welcome to the new college basketball scene.

  10. I totally agree! In talking to some of the baseball families from MAC schools, the past few seasons were tough because after only half the season, most of the teams were not in the running for anything without a tourney. Now they need to earn it, but as you said, one bad game or two doesn't keep them out.

  13. Not really a reference to our city but I didn't know where else to post this. Highlights the etymological root of our city's name. Pretty cool. (Guthrie is on vacation in Greece.)
