  1. Without covid, players like Ali or Freeman would have had 1 less year of eligibility therefore they wouldn't have been on last year's Zips team. It's really hard to predict how things would have been in an alternate reality where covid didn't exist.

  2. Here’s another thought. The Akron Rubberducks lead the league in attendance. Yes it’s minor league, but it’s baseball in Akron. They drew 3,900 fans per game to downtown Akron. That might not sound like much but they play 5 or 6 times a week. 70 home games a season X 8 minor league teams in Ohio. What do they do better? How do they engage the fans? Akron. Has. No. Clue. They can’t sell football in northeast Ohio. Some high schools draw more football fans. I went to Akron, and still lost interest in the Zips. In the right hands, it could be exciting again.

  4. This cannot be understated. The BS move to cancel everything in 2020 set this program back a few years. The Freeman thread posed the question "what will Freeman's draft pick do for the program" - imagine where we'd be with a potential tourney run in 2020 AND Freeman getting drafted?

  5. Not to mention we were in the driver’s seat in 2020 before Covid struck. That could have made it 3 out of 5 years. I believe the horses are in the barn for another exciting season.

  6. I think when you evaluate Groce. How can you not be happy. He has found a way to make it to the NCAA tournament 2 out of 3 years. Since joining the MAC Akron has made it 5 times. That is 5 in 32 year we are in the good times! The core of Ali Ali and Freeman was unstoppable. Sure you would have wished to capitalize on those 2 elite players and win a tournament game. But I’m just glad to have my team get called on selection Sunday. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-American_Conference_men's_basketball_tournament#Tournament_champions

  7. I was thinking the same thing. I vote for hanging a banner for Enrique's Mom right next to his.

  10. As a Zips fan, I was bothered.....by WMU "bragging" about their recent success against the Zips. I am ready for the Zips to re-assert their superiority over that team up north. WMU and Akron University will renew their storied rivalry on August 30 at "The Farm".The Brown and Gold will look to continue their recent success against the Zips and will shoot for their fourth win in six contests against their foes from Ohio. The Broncos and Zips last faced off on November 12, 2022, in the MAC Tournament Championship game, where the Brown and Gold defeated Akron 2-1 behind goals from WMU alumni Charlie Sharp and Jaylen Shannon. Akron concluded the 2023 season ranked 45th in the RPI after posting a 9-2-7 record.

  11. 2012-13, easily. If Diggs doesn't get himself suspended in the offseason and Abreu doesn't do the same in March, I have no doubt that team wins a tournament game. Despite losing two significant contributors, they still went 26-7 and won the MAC Championship in a blowout despite having a week to prepare to play without Abreu. Then they get the nightmare matchup against VCU and half the team was sick to top it off. To me, they were no-doubt the greatest "what if" Zips team. That group was built to be special.

  12. Enrique was a true 5 yr player. Ali probably could've received a medical red shirt during his year at Butler. At least I think that's right. IMO aside from the 20 team the one that leaves me with lots of "What if's" is the 22/23 team. Add Ali back to that mix as a 3rd option with X at point and you've got the makings of a top 25 team.

  13. Agreed. I would gladly trade a year of their eligibility for the 2020 team having a postseason.

  14. I haven't seen anyone say they aren't happy. We can appreciate the success we've had while also analyzing good and bad decisions that have been made.

  15. My thousands of hours spent in bars has allowed to observe different types of human behavior. Can I get a couple of credits for Sociology? This doesn't strike me as a good idea. At same time, my college transcript contains one credit hour for Varsity Football. I guess used smartly, it's a good idea.

  18. Student activities fees pay for athletics. They are separate from tuition, of which the State of Ohio only pays 4% currently. (Used to be 40%). So student fees are not taxes. Moreover, it is against the law for tax dollars to be used for on-campus athletics facilities. Even student rec centers.

  19. College athletics should benefit five things: the athletes students alumni fans and general communities around the schools. I fall into the fan and alumni categories. Give me a competitive game that lasts less than 3.25 hours at a time on Saturday that is convenient for me to go to the game and have a dinner at 7 PM somewhere in Akron. Also, give away tickets to the taxpayers of Ohio. They are paying for it, they should get to attend a game or two for free.

  21. You should dream bigger. My dream, and I predict it will come true in the next 10 years, is for G5 schools starting their own division/conference. Then a sane geographical alignment can take place. I'm just spit balling here. Why couldn't they carve out a nice eastern conference that could have the likes of UMass, Buffalo, Temple, UConn, Army, Navy in it for starters? Maybe Marshall? Maybe Akron, Kent and YSU? That could make a nice 10 team conference with one 05 game, one lower division game and one game against a team from another conference in our division. Round robin conference champion determines who makes the playoffs. Make every game count.
