i have a friend that a big barrel-aged beer fan. Can I ask where you got it?
-
I know he left Akron and joined some collegiate sports marketing company. Maybe he will have more success at promoting a conference than running an athletic program.
-
This reeks of 1st world problems. MAC teams get about a million per team off their TV deal and the only reason we get that much is because we sacrificed our Saturday games for Tuesday and Wednesday games.
-
Big 12 teams are on average making $36.5 million per year from their TV deal. That would be enough alone to fund Akron's entire athletic department. $4.5 million is a drop in the bucket for a Big 12 school.

I feel even Kehres has question marks. He inherited a program that his dad built into the Alabama of D3 football and his dad is still heavily involved in the program. It's much easier to recruit when you've built a program to a point that you're boosters offer players "academic scholarships" while much of your competition relies on walk-ons. I'm not saying he wouldn't be a good hire as frankly I don't know. I just feel thinking he's an automatic slam dunk isn't looking at the whole picture.
-
I agree with Captain. What's most important is making the right hire even if it costs us a few more guys.
-
Yes, I definitely won't be as excited if we hire Arth as I was when we signed Bowden or Groce and I imagine that sentiment is mostly felt a crossed this entire board. That being said I really don't care about winning headlines before a coach coaches his first game. I care about where he is able to lead the program. I'll give whoever it is a chance. If I don't like their performance 3-4 years into their tenure, I'll be back here with my pitchfork.
-
Any candidate Akron hires is going to have something about them will create some worry. All the guys who check all the boxes already have jobs at the big time programs. Personally, like you I'm going into it with an open mind and will support whoever we get.
-
Bowden could have been here for 12 years putting up his usual 5-7 records and some people would still be using the team he inherited as an excuse. He's gone now, move on.
-
I wasn't referring to you, but if the crown fits...
-
He claims to be an Akron fan, but is afraid to actually see the team succeed
-
Would seem like a terrible deal for us if they have already indeed paid us 50% of the total without requiring a game.
-
It seems odd to me that they're requesting a future match up. Do they have issues attracting G5 programs to Lincoln or something?
-
I said any chump could have improved us from the 1-11 record we were, which is true. Even a coach that consistently went 4-8 would have been an improvement over the dumpster fire we were before. Bowden made huge strides early on, which I acknowledged and have thanked him for in the past. The program never really made that next leap which is why he's gone.
-
What's your point? We had a string of very poor coaches. Bowden was just slightly less bad than the others. This is the MAC, there are no blue bloods holding us down. There is no reason Akron can't compete with Buffalo, Toledo, or NIU. Edit: The programs you mentioned Toledo and NIU have had sustained success with multiple coaches. It's not impossible to achieve.

Take out his 1-11 season and he's still at a sub .500 record at 34-41. Making 2 bowls in 7 years isn't impressive. Roughly 2/3 of all FBS schools go to bowl games and 5-6 MAC teams go bowling per year. Out of Frank Solich 14 years at OU, he's finished 10 seasons with a winning record and only had 1 year with a losing record. Bowden had a losing record in 5 of his years and only finished 1 year above .500. The only comparison between the two is they both had a long enough tenure to tell what they were capable of. Frank's floor is a 6-6 team that will go bowling every year while his ceiling is 9-10 win team that will contend with the best teams in the MAC. Bowden's floor is a 4-5 win team that misses bowl games while his ceiling was a 7-8 win team that loses by 3 touchdowns to the best teams of the MAC.

Any half competent coach could have done the same. When you're at the bottom there is only 1 direction that you can go.
-
Just in general when you already don't have a great offensive line to start with and you ask your QB to consistently both extend and create plays with his legs it isn't a matter of if the QB will get injured. It becomes a matter of when. Anyone that expected a 100% Kato Nelson for all 12 games given the way he was playing and the hits he was taking was kidding themselves.

It seems like every year we release a new 3 year plan. How about we actually follow one of these plans through? Personally, I feel the college system is broken and needs to be fixed. All the Ohio public schools are trying to compete with one another to have the nicest facilities which in turn drives up the costs which in turn makes it so more people can't afford college. If the public schools actually worked together we could drive down costs making it so more people could afford it. Akron and Kent are separated by 12 miles. It doesn't make sense for both to have engineering & liberal arts programs. Akron does engineering better. We should focus our attention and resources on that. Kent State does liberal arts better. They should focus their resources on that. By doing this NEO both universities could shed costs while also improving what they're best at already. I'm sure there are other programs that can be divvied up one way or another. I just used this as a quick example.

Game 10- Marshall Thundering Herd

I'm a fan of what D'Antoni has done with the program. He inherited an 11 win team and transformed them into a solid mid-major. It's nice getting at least one semi-decent program to the JAR during the OOC season every other year. Here's to hoping they keep extending the series. -
Game 9- Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons

I just looed at the numbers and Banks is shooting over 40% from behind the arc. Roscoe is shooting 47% from behind the arc in a limited number of attempts as well. It would be nice for Roscoe to do whatever he needs to do to see more time on the floor. He's been a nice offensive spark at times for a team that has gone through a lot of stretches of not being able to buy a bucket -

The difference between those Dambrot teams that were 3 point happy compared to this team is those Dambrot teams had proven 3-point shooters. I'm not sure if any of these guys outside of Utomi is an above average 3-point shooter. This team seems to have more athleticism at the guard positions than those Dambrot times. It would be nice to use that to attack the basket. -
You do realize that 4.5 million of that 10 million per year is for the football stadium? Disbanding the program therefore would only cut costs by about 5.5 million. Meanwhile, we would lose the ~1.3 million guaranteed revenue from (insert P5 program here) & another ~1 million per year from the MAC tv deal with ESPN. We're down to a net -3.2 million and we haven't even discussed the revenue lost from ticket sales (including premium seating), donations made towards football program, and advertising/royalties. Also, we'd likely get booted from the MAC so we'd have to find another conference for the remainder of our sports. This could lead to potential increase in travel costs for our other sports. Subtracting the football stadium, which is a sunk cost, the football program itself is probably close to breakeven. The real cost savings from cutting the football program is from all the non-revenue women's sports we'd also be able to cut while still maintaining our Title IX compliance.

Game 9- Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons

We deserved to lose. If Mastadons were any good we would have lost by 20. Hopefully we get this dud performance out of our system and we will show up to play on the road during MAC play. -

I guess the Zips must have thought the start time of the game was 8:20
