2021 - Former Zips in College - Where are they now
kreed5120 replied to zippyfan34's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Dambrot made it to 7 straight MAC championships. It seems a bit of an exaggeration to say he wasn't equipped for the MAC. Now to say he isn't equipped for the A10 is a very fair statement. I feel Dambrot is quickly realizing that at-large bids are given to teams, not conferences. You still have to put a talented enough roster on the court to get resume building wins. Without those it's actually more challenging to make the tournament in the A10 compared to the MAC as its easier to beat an Ohio, Buffalo, Toledo in the conference tournament to secure the auto-bid than it is to beat St Louis, VCU, Dayton. I have no ill will against Dambrot and am overall pleased we managed to get Groce. Without Groce this program could have turned south quick. This is now year 5 of Groce. If you're going to criticize Dambrot for making it to 9 MAC finals (winning 3) in his 13 years as head coach, you need to start considering criticizing Groce for having yet to make it to a Saturday in Cleveland. Edit: To clarify this post isn't meant to be anti-Groce. I just think the downplaying of Dambrot era is unwell. The only reason Akron had expectations was he built the basketball program have them. -
He's shooting 36.1% from 3. That's still above average. If he was a MAC team, Trimble would be 3rd in the MAC in 3P%. He had a pretty abysmal performance down in Florida, like several other Zips. You take those games out and he's shooting a pretty elite 40% from 3 with his 1/6 performance game against OSU being his only other clunker.
-
I agree, but his play the final 10 minutes is what brought us back into the game. I really feel without Freeman being productive on the offensive end and no Trimble, Ali felt he had to put the team on his back tonight. That's why his slot selection was so poor those last 2 minutes

Idk if they were really deeper. They just had the two best players on the court. Sears may end up winning MAC POY. Akron desperately needs more players that can create their own shot.
-
Betting the under seemed to play the play. A very sloppy game so far.
-
If only we a dedicated beat writer who would tweet out this information as it became known...
-
I'm looking at their team stats and outside of Roderick nobody is really shooting that far off from their career averages from 3. They're just not a good shooting team. They will have to win games with defense and effort.

Moorhead’s Akron Coaching Staff 2022

Yes, just because he was a terrible FBS head coach doesn't mean he can't succeed as a QB coach. -
The NET only includes D1 vs D1 games in the numbers. The Net rankings are released new daily. I think we were in the 170s prior to beating Buffalo so we did climb 25 or so spots with the win. Buffalo WA ~100 before the game so they fell a similar amount. You don't see much movement here because these previous and current rankings are based off the changes related to the Sunday games. Since no MAC schools played yesterday, there wasn't much impact. Had you looked at the rankings Sunday morning, you'd have seen the large changes in Akron, UB, etc.
-
Buffalo committed 25 fouls against Miami and 27 fouls against us. I suppose it's easier for their fans to blame the officials instead of blaming the coaches/players for not playing with discipline.

Anyone know if Trimble is expected to be back for this game?

I wouldn't go to the emergency room. You don't want to expose others to it if you have it. Not to mention the long waiting times. Just before Thanksgiving I was a close contact and was feeling a little sick. I didn't think I had covid (which turned out to be accurate), but wanted to make sure as the last thing I wanted to do was give it to my family on Thanksgiving. I scheduled an appointment with The Liberty Clinic in Belden Village for a rapid test. I didn't even have to leave my car. They ran someone out to me to test me. My insurance also covered the cost. It took all of a few minutes. You can do an at home test too, but I don't have any experience with that.
-
I believe Clark is referring to the ones that are getting covid severe enough that they need to be hospitalized. The numbers I've seen reported range anywhere from 66%-85% of hospitalizations are from the unvaccinated.
-
Considering Akron had 2 games cancelled and BG only 1, I suspect Akron still having covid is what's causing the issue.
-
The MAC is horrendous this year and Akron laid a stinker down in Florida. Unless 100+ teams would pull out there is no way Akron would even be in the conversation for an at-large.
-
EMU announced today that their first two MAC games are postponed. The opponents were Ohio and Buffalo.
-
Anyone have any updates on player availability for this game?

It's because they're paying them to volunteer at local charities. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/university-of-texas-football-players-pancake-factory-132446197.html Edit: Or I should say that's what they're claiming to the IRS that way they can get non-profit status and remain NIL compliant. Most teams do charitable work anyways so its not really requiring anything additional from the athletes.
-
Schools can't pay it directly, but there is already a non-profit setup to pay each Texas scholarship offensive linemen $50k. The university itself isn't paying it, but you know the coach will be advertising that when recruiting a linemen.
-
The TP giveth and the TP taketh. I feel the programs at the G5 level that will do well are the ones who embrace it instead of trying to hold onto the past. The NIL money is going to attract the same players to the same P5 blue bloods. Difference is an o-lineman might sign with Texas instead of OSU since Texas offered them 100k while OSU only offered 80k. Regardless that player was never going to come to Akron anyways. NIL really only becomes an issue if NIU, Kent, Toledo, etc. starts raising significant funds therefore becomes more attractive to recruits.
-
Yes, I didn't account for the fact he redshirted his 2nd year so he will get 6 years with the covid extension, not 5.
-
Scholarships don't really cost the university much money. Not really much marginal cost in letting a kid sit in a class that has an empty desk. Really it's just the cost of food and utilities.
-
Yes, that CB we got from WVU is a prime example. He played a decent amount as a true freshman, but didn't see the field much the past 2 years. He comes to Akron and we get 2 years of eligibility out of him. I'm assuming he'll start both years. Tying up scholarships on redshirts doesn't make as much sense now that you can bring in transfers that can play day 1.
-
This years already pretty picked over at the high school level and Akron needs players that can help them immediately. I'd expect 80% of this years recruits to be transfers and juco players.

It can't be a worse run defense than what we witnessed this season
