Short ESPN story on it.

Good article on an Ohio alum point of view on the hire. Let's get this thing going!
-
Reggie McAdams (in Civil Engineering!) three straight years and Jake Kretzer for his final two. Carmelo Betancourt in 13-14. Brian Walsh three times(with a 4.0 in his senior year) Steve McNees (also with a 4.0) and Mike Bardo in 10-11. I think before 2009 there were only spots for the top five players but then they loosened it up to anyone who had over a 3.2 and played in at least 50% of the teams games. BTW this years women's team had three - Alli Ball, Hannah Plybon and Megan Sefcik.

Shoot really hate to lose a kid like that. Now that Groce is a here maybe a reverse full court press and convince his brother to come here? The one thing about those teams is you usually don't see a lot of the top players in the league on it so have to hand to James Thompson IV. The only MAC player to be named to any of the postseason All_MAC teams and also the academic. Also have to admit he'd not the first guy that would have come to mind for that so kudos to him.

Agreed also love some of the angst coming from Athens over it. Should make the rivalry even more fun. I loved one of their posters who stated the difference between Groce and Dambrot could be that they'd rather have Mr. March coaching than Mr. February. I think that was always what frustrated Zips fans, fantastic starts (with the exception you could almost always count on one head scratching early season loss) followed by fizzling finishes. But what really makes me want to have this work is the arrogance on the Ohio board. Most think we've made a good hire but some are convinced that because of facilities, city, "lesser education" that Groce won't do as well as well here. Hate that elitist attitude, quite frankly education at most schools is what you make of it and almost every school is roughly equivalent now. There are really only a few true standouts. As though they are somehow the Ivy equivalent in the MAC. I will give them the Ivy equivalent of the Appalachians if it makes them feel better. And this from someone whom I may have mentioned had a great uncle who was once President of OU.

Not that it matters a great deal but Keith's first year was 04-05 when Ohio won the tournament, so in Keith's 13 years Akron, Kent and Ohio all won it three times. I'm not going to run down Keith and his accomplishments nor am I ready to declare MAC dominance for the next ten years. But I am really intrigued.

I think you may have missed this one in another thread. I think that was the point. I'm always entertained by the OU fans with the "Crakron" references. If you go back a few pages on that blog, you can read some really horrible stuff about Akron and how no coach's wife (Mrs. Groce for one) would ever agree to allow her husband to take a job here because this is a dead, failing, awful hell mouth of a city.

Funny that you chose that particular video for the goal. I happen to be the one who shot and posted that video. That's me screaming like a banshee in it.

Jim Christian (or Jamion)? Well even if it was only done to annoy Bobcat fans I'm OK with it. I hope it's simply analogous to another situation about ten years ago when another respected and successful coach bolted Akron soccer because of frustration of being "unable to win in Akron". And then ...
-
That can't be current, they have a quote from a Keith Dambrot, head coach of Akron.

Yep and according to Google Earth its still there right next to Kathryn Place.

Basement apartment on Exchange Street between the Townhouse Bar and its parking lot. People used to stop and pee on my windows in the bushes by the house (and not always guys but maybe some of you - lol). Since torn down and replaced by the head shop that was displaced by Infocision.

If Gonzaga wins the National title will teams be more eager to schedule us since we played Villanova last year?

Dambrot says 'yes' to Duquesne this time
MDZip replied to GeorgeThomasABJ's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Someone already did it. For those of you who don't want to look at the Zips were 251 of 351. Seemed about right to me. -
He's got a tough road ahead of him. The A-10 is a very good basketball league and Duquesne finished dead last last year and their last appearance in the NCAA tournament was 1977. Disappointed to see him go but wish him well and hope he just didn't make a disappearing career move.

Do we get that retention bonus back? -
Up to 6 can we find two more?

According to the announcers this is the first time ever a #8 seed made the semis (and the first time ever no #1 seed made the quarters).

Zips at Texas-Arlington — NIT Round 2 (Mon 8 pm)
MDZip replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
UTA deserved an NCAA at-large bid. They had 8 losses and half were to NCAA bound teams plus the wins over Texas and St. May's (and Mt St Marys who also made the tournament). Their OOC was solid they got bit by losing to a few OK conference schools. You almost have to go undefeated in conference as a mid-major. Maybe the NCAA needs a rule that you have to go at least .500 in your own conference to get selected. Mid-majors are going to get screwed over forever in the current format. UTA was way underseeded. I think they have an excellent shot at winning the NIT. I want to see a final of them vs Illinois and have them absolutely smoke Illinois (who is the only seed higher than 4 still left). Yeah that was a fair seeding process. Despite all the wailing and gnashing of teeth I think the Zips lost to a very good team. -
Since basketball season is over I thought I'd bring this up again. I have only had two people express any interest in getting a table together. I also checked with the athletic dept. and didn't get any response on whether the University was doing anything. So if I don't hear from anyone else by the end of the month I will just put in for seats for the ones who have responded. Darn shame if we can't get a table of 8 Zips fans together for an event that we will likely not see again in our lifetimes.

You're correct, they of the "Let's go Peay" chant were hosted at the JAR on Feb 17 of 07. I missed them because we played Duquesne on Feb 26, 07. I missed AP because I saw Duquesne on the schedule in February and assumed they were the Bracketbusters opponent. Did we somehow play two Bracketbusters games that year? Now I'm confused.
-
Bracketbusters went from 03-04 through 12-13. Our opponents in order were Drake, Niagara, Nevada, Duquesne, VCU, Youngstown St, VCU again, Creighton, Oral Roberts and North Dakota State. The really cool thing about it was even if you played an away game you were guaranteed a home game with them in the next two seasons. Brought some really good opponents to the JAR who were occasionally ranked. The series with MTSU was a four year home and away from 11-12 to 14-15. Zips lost three of the four but it was a terrific series.

And Diego Restrepo is listed as #59 and also unemployed. I hope he never finds another job.

Zips at Texas-Arlington — NIT Round 2 (Mon 8 pm)

Plenty that are far, far worse than the JAR. Here's a list of 12 that don't even seat 2,000 people. SC Upstate (whom we've played - seats 818, the smallest of any D-1 venue). -
And look at what they did to Minnesota yesterday. They are at where we'd like to be. Even if some of the above named opponents wouldn't get Joe Akron excited (sorry to impugn you Joe :-)) they would definitely help in the eyes of the committee. Although after reading how the mid-majors get screwed over regardless I think you'd have to have a schedule like that and still win 80% of them to even be considered.
