Guess we aren't the only ones struggling with OU's guards
akronzips71 replied to Quickzips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Now we're comparing Ohio beating Georgetown to the Jets winning the Super Bowl? Ask one of your profs what the significance of "anecdotal evidence" is. -
Does the Cooper over the shoulder pass

Seriously? Comparing him to Magic now? lol...dude, he is a heckuva player, but lets be serious here. And do we really need 5 OU-related threads? They played a GREAT game. They validated their wins agains K-ENT and US. They are on fire. What else can I say. And it IS good for the MAC no matter what you say. A mid level team from a mid level mid major blows out GEORGETOWN!!!!! Awesome, I hope they can do it again. You should just change your username. Possibilities include: OhioBobcats71 IHeartDJCooper71 DJIsGod71 Thats very childish. Our season is over. Our league needs a boost. Back in 1966 Earl the Pearl blew us out of the Mid East Regionals. And we stood up and applauded because we knew we were in the presence of a great player. There is nothing wrong with appreciating great play. Mickey Mantle was the greatest draw in baseball. Opposing stadiums would sell out when the Yanks came to town because they wanted to see the Mick hit home runs. He was that great in his prime and fans want to see great players. REAL sports fans can appreciate a great performance, even when their team loses. And in this case, our team is not even in it. I'm just messing with ya man...no offense meant. But in all seriousness, you have now compared DJ Cooper/Ohio U to: Magic Johnson Mickey Mantle The New York Jets that won the Super Bowl I'm just saying... DJ plays baseball AND is an entire NFL football team? WOW I didn't know that. Now I am REALLY impressed. -
D.J. Cooper...Better than LeBron James?

+1 again DAVE IS ON FIRE. Seriously, no one is a better bb player than LeBron. But until they learn to clone him.... -
+1 The best defense is a good offense.

try 14.5. Good thing I only put $0.50 on it. I wonder how many people picked OU in the pool? Maybe one or two in the entire country. I honestly did. haha Nah, you didn't. It's a fools bet. BUT the Cats +13.5 probably tempted a lot of people. I never would have touched that line, of course, the did beat them by 14. That means someone out there won BIG! They actually beat them by 28, bookie wise.

Look, if you want to use anecdotal evidence: THE 1969 JETS WIN THE SUPERBOWL Now for those who were not around in 1969, after the merger EVERYONE said the AFL was INFERIOR and could never beat the NFL (of course AFC and NFC but to to the old guys it was the AFL). So the Jets with Namath win and the rest is history. The leagues were equal and the merger was a complete success. Nothing validates like winning an unwinnable game (just ask the UNDEFEATED Patriots about that). -
K-ENT wins in NIT, Bobcats on national TV

I'm a kid. I'll savor my childhood and hate everyone I want. Right on! We're all born with the inalienable right to choose to be kids our whole lives and continue hating everyone we want until the day we die. Millions do it. GO DAVE +1 -

LOL...Right. Duke deserved a 1-seed. Xavier probably deserved a 5-seed but only got a 6. But anyways, your talking about individual schools, and not conferences. The point is that these wins won't help MAC teams resumes come next March. The only way to do that is to win big OOC conference games in November-December. You know, if DJ and AB have another game or two like this one (AND the Akron game) there WILL be TV games on ESPN. All the networks care about is ratings, if they become big stars in the Dance they will have drawing power. That did happen with Wally in his last year. All the tourney games he was in were hyped big time. -

I totally agree. The BEST route to success for the MAC is to win against quality opponents in games that count. The Dance and the NIT are the absolute best possibility for that to happen. -

First of all, if they win another game and don't get the MAC tourney next year, they could get an at large because of the two guards. They DO consider stuff like that, and OU has a budding (freshman!) superstar and a superb "other" guard. They want to see the stars play, like when Wally was playing. BTW, could we trade them infocision stadium for Cooper? I'm sorry, I still don't see them getting an at-large...again, it's been 11 years since the MAC's last at-large...why would anything change now? I also don't think Bassett and Cooper can be thrown in the same group as Wally just yet... DJ COOPER IS A FRESHMAN!!! Just yet has a long way to go..... -

Totally agree. Gtown had height, OU had shooters who are amazing athletes. It would have been a very poor match for us. All I want for Christmas is a guard who can shoot like that! I think Akron would have gotten the 13 seed if they had beat OU in the MAC tournament. But chances are we would have lost anyway considering how bad our defense was throught the tournament. I don't know. Gtown, a #3 seed and a top national program had MORE trouble with those two than we did. It may be not so much how bad we were as how good they were. -

Three more years of playing against him is downright frightening. -
For the alley-oop make the highlights? It should. That was AWESOME. Shades of Magic Johnson.

Believe it or not, some of us have hopes of being more than a one-bid conference. What does it say if Ohio wins a game or two and K-ent goes deep in the NIT? These are all small steps toward recognition for the conference. Now we just need to develop an answer from Basset and Cooper. Humpty? D-Rob? Helloooo? Anyone home? Ohio winning will have no effect on the MAC getting multiple bids. Winning one game, you are correct. OU goes to the Sweet 16 and K-ENT goes to the semis and there IS an impact, and just maybe not always a one bid conference. To get at large bids you have to prove yours teams can win in the dance. -
And Coopers shooting and passing - as I said in an earlier thread, we may not have to face him for three years. There will be interest in this guy after this performance on national TV

K-ENT wins in NIT, Bobcats on national TV

Ohio looks good to score around 80 unless they collapse. Gtown has to hit 40 points in 14 minutes to have a chance. This one looks very solid right now. -

Nothing wrong with being bitter about a loss...VMD just has to understand that OU winning is good for the conference and therefore good for Zips. Don't we get a piece of that payout if they win a game in the tournament? To play devil's advocate... Ohio winning helps them in recruiting. Better recruiting = better teams. Better teams = tougher for Akron to win the conference. Besides...does anyone really believe Akron or the MAC will gain respect with a win? They'll be viewed as an exception to an otherwise mediocre conference. The way they are playing there "could" be more than one win. And it is incredibly petty to say that winning is bad for US since they would get better recruits and beat us. The entire point is to win, and they are doing it. The beat not only the BEST team in the MAC but also the SECOND BEST team in the MAC. -

They are playing absolutely wonderful bball. It really makes you wonder what all those big schools were thinking when Cooper was available to be recruited. These two guys could play for anyone, and Washington is an assassin on transition. I also like the way the refs are calling the game. Letting them play, but calling the travels, something the MAC refs only seem to see when Nik has the ball.
