  1. Thank you and to all of the Zips. The last 5 years have been the Golden era of Akron basketball and has made for many entertaining nights.
  2. Why does he mention the Can't offer then? If the kid isn't going to a MAC school, why report on the offer from Can't? My favorite French line a few years back on the 5:45 AM report - "I could stand on this table and flap my butt cheeks. They would make more sense than George Thomas."
  3. Agreed, Zeke is doing fine. The team is flexible enough to play without him for stretches which is good. He will be needed though in the post season. And you bring good points up. A year from now he will be a bigger, stronger, seasoned guy. The offense is running well. If we can get to the last 5 minutes and Zeke has 2 fouls or less, look out because he just shuts down the middle at the end of games when he can be aggressive.
  4. I am pulling for KD, he should have gotten it at least once in the past. I still think whoever wins the MAC East gets it with Witherspoon a long shot if he can rally to 10-6. Preseason picks are meaningless but the same guys who vote on that pick the COTY. Buffalo was picked for 6th. Can't, Akron, and Miami were all close to interchangeable at 2,3 ,and 4. All 4 of these guys would have good cases if they finish strong.
  5. Nice win last night and great game to watch. It was a good night of entertainment.
  6. Good points. I don't follow the program as closely as others, go to a couple of games per year, catch some games on the radio, listen to the coaches show. So I am not as credible as many of you but my thoughts are- when Kest came in she cleaned house. From what many people said the team needed an attitude adjustment. Now that she has her own players in, having 2 starters leave as upperclassmen is disturbing. One interesting comment from Jodi a few weeks ago on the coaches show and I am paraphrasing - she said that she realizes that not all kids can be treated the same. Some get yelled at and peform worse and she is trying to do a better job dealing with players differently. If effort isn't there that is one thing but on the other stuff she is approaching things differently. My 2 cents, she is a good coach but unless she can figure a way to get the most out of everyone and keep them for 4 years, the Zips will be a mid pack team. She is too good to have them fall back to the past even with attrition, but they are not going to be a top 3-4 team in the league relying on freshman and sophomores every year. Hopefully she figures out the type of kid that she works best with as well because she has had the only success pretty much ever for Akron women's basketball.
  7. Good story, thanks for sharing.
  8. During ZipsLive a couple of weeks back KD said Justice is similar to a Nick Dials type player.
  9. This was the best performance since Can't last month. Defense was strong again and ball movement was good as well. McNees looks more comfortable getting the bulk of his minutes at PG, Nik played the best all around game that I have seen, and everyone contributed. Ball State is big on Saturday.
  10. Good win yesterday. Zips came out ready to play and never let Toledo get back to single digits. Way too many blown leads this year, they stayed focused throughout. Defensively that is now 4 out of the last 5 games where the D has played well. I don't see not playing Euton or Egner with 3-4 minutes left as a detriment. If you want to develop them, play them when it counts not with 3 minutes left of a blow out. I like both guys but I don't see Euton helping this year. Egner maybe, but I want to win now. Put the best guys out there to win, worry about development later.
  11. Good point, shooting has been bad but I also see 10-12 points a game left on the table by not finishing at the rim. Shot selection across the board has been a struggle. Be smarter in decision making and make the open shots within 5 feet of the basket seems like 2 easy things to correct. Not having your big guys trying to drive coast to coast 3 to 4 times a game or hoisting 23 footers with 30 seconds on the shot clock also lead to better possessions. No question though that a lot of open looks where guys are in their comfort zone have not gone in this year.
  12. I look for good things tonight, smart and toughness, 2 things that we have consistently lacked this year. If some guys don't produce early I look for some new guys to get playing time. Just over a month until the tourney, no time left to wait around. That said, I expect the veterans to step up tonight.
  13. Looking forward to Sunday and watching CMU hold the ball at the top of the key for 25 seconds before moving into their offense.
  14. No one is complaing about the volume. If you think blasting that song, with the lyrics listed above, is appropriate for a college basketball game, you are ignorant. Period. Play the song in your car, your iPod...watch a girl swing around a brass pole while that song blasts in the background...I'm fine with it. But don't ask parent-coaches to bring their 3rd and 4th grade Kiwanis basketball teams to games where songs like that are featured entertainment. That's ignorant. It is ironic that we have standards on ZipsNation where profanity is banned. We don't want "Little Joeys" (young kangaroo) subjected to it. But some people who think profanity on our board is intolerable, seem to think it is perfectly fine to hear at Zips sporting events? +1 You can't have stuff like that at a college game. If people are throwing F-bombs out in the stands, they can and should get kicked out. What makes this different?
  15. Thanks much, looking forward to the press conference!
  16. Ianello is definitely making inroads in the Senate League. 3 Glenville kids with the transfer and now this kid.
  17. Zips by 3. Looking forward to an exciting night tonight.
  18. Thanks for the update, good for Steve!
  19. Miami is a play away from losing to an 0-10 Akron team and finishing 7-5. He might prove to be the guy but a lot of faith to put in him at Pitt with 1 good year. Just having a winning record in the MAC for a year or two seems to be enough to get a big jump up, Turner Gill, the NIU guy, Haywood. Heck Golden had double the budget and couldn't beat Solich the last 2 years and he gets the Miami job.
  20. It was a nice letter, I received mine today. I appreciated getting one.
  21. If there is a playoff, the bowls will come to an end within 10 years of the playoff system starting. There will be no interest in them. Neutral site games are not realistic for a football playoff system because most of the alumni of any school can't afford to travel to more than one bowl game a year, let along 2-4 playoff games. The stadiums would have a lot of empty seats as it is hard to find 85,000 fans in any city willing to go watch a game they have no interest in. Speaking of neutral site games, I see the PAC 10 is going to play their championship game at one of the schools in the championship. I think this is a great idea and something the MAC should look at doing again. Nothing says "small time" like the thousands and thousands of empty seats in Detroit. Play at a smaller stadium and the empty seats won't look so bad. If the PAC 10 can do it, the MAC can do it.In the above brackets, there are only three games there that would be worth the time watching. The first round wouldn't be much different than the first round of the NCAA basketball tournament. I agree, the game last weekend was fairly entertaining. If they had played before 20K at a 30K seat stadium that would have made it even better.
  22. Attendance for the quarters was Louisville 5400 Maryland 3500 Akron 3400 UNC 1700 I would say not bad given the conditions and the crowd was definitely into the game.
  23. Thanks for the link Blue and Gold. I missed that on ohio.com. Seems to make sense that they decide after the semester ends.
