  1. He also holds the record for being the only opening day QB traded the following day after opening day.Anybody can complete a lot of passes in the NFL to guys out of the backfield. The key is completing passes downfield. With a weak arm, he can't complete passes downfield. The bottom line is Charlie is not a winning QB. He didn't win in the worst conference in D-1A and he didn't win with the Browns. That's why Charlie doesn't get on the field...he just isn't a winner.Maybe you are not a Browns fan. If you were, you would know the entire story behind why Charlie was let go instead of Anderson. The entire time Anderson and Frye were together in Cleveland, barring injury, Frye won the starting job. Every time. As far as your comments about "anybody can complete a lot of passes out of the backfield", you may not know that all of the figures on completions, yardage, average yards, attempts, etc., are ALL taken into consideration when figuring a QB rating. And once again, Charlie's is pretty darn good under the circumstances he was playing under, and very favorable compared to other first and 2nd year QBs.skip-zip- I have to disagree. I was the biggest Frye fan coming out of Akron. I wanted him to succeed more than anyone...Not only for himself, but to help put UA on the national map with a starting NFL. We've had these discussions over the years with GP1 leading the way. While I will never agree with GP1 and the constant "he wasn't a winner at UA, therefore he's a terrible quarterback" logic. I know he didn't have a winning record at UA, but neither did any of the qb's before him. He simply was the best QB at UA in the last 25 years. No one is even a close second in my book...(Although I personally rate Mike Johnson second) Now as far as the NFL is concerned, GP1 is correct. He's awful.. But he's awful because his arm strength in the NFL is "weak", he struggles reading defenses and he always wants to take off and make a play on the run. THis doesn't cut it in the NFL and are the reasons that he is barely hanging on in Oakland, not because he wasn't a winner at UA.He was terrible in CLeveland, awful in Seattle and will lucky to be on a roster by year end. He had (has) three chances in the NFl to take the bull by the horn and become a starting qb ...couldn't hold off DA in Cleveland, an injury prone M. Hasslebeck in Seattle or the awful J. Russell in Oakland....I wish it was different...
  2. Captain Kangaroo should like this one. Even when we win the greatest game in program history, we create reasons for why we really should not have.We back-doored into the 2008-9 MAC basketball championship too. Humpty got lucky...we should have lost to the 12-seed. Right?I guess so.....I don't agree, but it seems to be the prevailing wisdom on the board, which is why GP1 goes the other way when it comes to prevailing wisdom on sports boards. Maybe we need to the start of any critical comment now on the basketball board with, "I love KD and even though he backed into that championship last year (insert criticism)".We didn't back into either championship...We were fortunate for sure...but we won fair and square. JD won 5 MAC games and then all the tie-breakers. No other MAC East team won more so how is it "backing in"? It happens in the NFL every year.
  3. Cursed may be a bit harsh, but I get your point. The answer is........Alumni...as in school pride and school support by "our" alumni...Most.. err...99% don't give a damn, so why should anyone else.
  4. Last year I posted complaining that the Zips game broadcasts were on a 10-12 second delay. As of last Saturday, that has changed. I talked to the sports director at 1350. He mentioned that 1350 was allowed to "turn off' the delay for HD broadcasts. While there is still a half second delay due to the signal getting sent to N. Carolina and back, you barely even notice this delay. He also mentioned that they plan to match the radio broadcast with any tv coverage for away games.Thank You 1350AM!
  5. Now that's a scary thought...
  6. Gentlemen, I have to politely disagree. JD makes how much? How about Shane? Is Walt working for free? It's pretty obvious to me that we have Larry, Moe and Curly running the team or we have the three blind mice? The QB issue is much more than a staff making an incorrect choice and going with Rogers two games into the season. The real issue here is that the staff completely dropped the ball when Jacquemain was named the starter, Rogers the back-up and Nicely was named third team. As STZ pointed out, Nicely was far superior and showed me more in 30 minutes of action than Jacquemain showed me in three years. Rogers would have a hard time carrying the clipboard.. at the high school level.. What did the staff do with the quartebacks all summer and early fall? Could they not see the talent in Nicely? I know practice is limited during the week. Hell, it would have taken me 20 minutes to see that he has the "it" in a quarterback. Yet somehow he was third team. Good grief!Four days and counting until basketball.....
  7. I believe it's because once a player is subbed out, he's out for the rest of the game.I thought the sub rules applied a little differently per half in college soccer. If you leave the game in the first half, you were done for the first- half, but could re-enter in the second half.If you leave the game in the second half, you could NOT re-enter the rest of the game. Can someone please clarify?
  8. Did Tressel write the foreward?
  9. I think a few people warned everyone about Barley House. They honestly suck. The OBC (if they have the station) is the only place ive ever been to in Akron besides Tap House that actually puts on the Zips games.I did!
  10. What a disgrace! If you all feel bad after watching that garbage on television, just imagine how bad I feel after witnessing that in person. Never been to CMU….Probably won’t go back. Was hoping the 09 Zips could pull off what the 07 Zips pulled off at Western and the 08 Zips pulled off in Eastern. The third time wasn’t a charm.CMU has a beautiful campus…Out in the middle of nowhere and not as nice as MU or OU, but nice nonetheless. The crowd was strong… even in the rain. Over 20K showed up. Their student body was as good as any MAC team I’ve seen. However, I was not disappointed in the end when maybe 3K remained at the final horn. After living through one of the worst weeks in UA football history for off the field problems, the team followed suit on the field. Losing your starting qb, getting a coach suspended with another player getting arrested may not fall in the most egregious of acts, but it’s bad enough. What irritates me about the whole situation is how everything is kept quiet.… Like a cover-up is underway. Speaking of cover-up’s, when are we going to get the real scoop on the running backs at UA. Clearly, the line isn’t helping the situation, but Allen and Torrence have been awful. Both get a few carries and then are not heard from for quarters. Are they hurt? Tell us JD.. If Tuzze is your lead runner, we may not win another game. Third and a foot and then 4th and one… and we go backwards. Both players seemed afraid to get hit.Rogers? D-3 at best! He doesn’t have it. Arm strength is non-existent… Why all the concern about saving a year for Nicely? He needs to play and NOW. If he cannot, because Rogers is better, then his high-school resume must have been exaggerated, but then again I’m beginning to think that most of our recruits’ high school press clippings are overrated.I still cannot figure which line was worse yesterday, offense or defense. With a perfect view at the forty yard line, neither seemed able to budge CMU. To their credit, CMU’s O-line was huge and I do not mean fat either. Marcoux was getting moved around like it was me out there. Our offensive line got knocked back on their heels all day and defensively we acted as if we had NO idea that LeFevour could run the ball. He was free to run all day.Bowser may be our most talented receiver but he was screwing around on the bench behind the team the entire second half. .. Didn’t seem to give a damn that we were getting blown out.Kudos to the CMU coaching staff for taking a knee at the end. They could have scored 70 if they wanted to.On a positive note, I guess I now see why Brian Wagner is the real deal. We had to pleasure to meet his parents. What awesome folks! Didn’t seem too overly concerned with Brian’s personal goals. All they talked about was winning….and getting the UA fans behind the team. At 1-3, that may be easier said than done.
  11. No crapping here. MAC East champs, baby...
  12. Easy GP1. You have the Zip faithful ..I mean buckeye faithful in a tizzy. They can recite the OSU two-deep roster by position for the last decade...yet don't know who Jim Dennison is. 'Buckzip' USC beat OSU because OSU has no offense. OSU beat USC up and down the field all night. Hmm..Let's see, OSU's offense went up and down the field...yet they have no offense. 'GP1' I don't even know whey the Cowboys keep Carpenter around....he is a nothing. Because the TUNA blew this one and he's Romo's second best friend on the team..Should have been a third round pick and cut three years ago.
  13. Speaking of notice, everyone should get the ABJ today. Great coverage, front page of the paper and the sports section as well. Superb pics...And what do you know...Zero coverage of you know who...They need to play more late games...O-H......N-O
  14. How about if I agree? The league is terrible. CJ is enough to win seven games the remainder of the season.Boy I hope you are correct. I saw nothing on Saturday to lead me to this conclusion. I need a little of what you are smoking.Find me at the Info. I'll have everything you need at the tailgate.
  15. Don't expect too much at the Barley House. The Luckeyes also kick-off at noon. Expect a sea of silver and red.
  16. I'll be there.
  17. Section 210, Row 4
  18. All of you Zips fans are just jealous!!
  19. I have a copy. While it will not make the NY Times best seller list, I would encourage all Zips fans to donate to the cause and buy one.My hats off for trying to assemble this info into a book. Not an easy task with the limited Zips media coverage over the years. And surprise, surprise...ZipGrad01 in true form supporting his buckeye coach. Just change your name to OSUfan01butIhavetomakeitlooklikeIsupporttheZips. Go away!I already ripped that page out of my copy and flushed it to where all buckeye stuff belongs. Woody writing a foreward in an MU book is fine. He was a head coach. Adding McSweatervest was done to sell books to "fans" like you know who. Very dissapointing...Jim Dennison should have been asked to write the forward.
  20. Yes, I am.Nice catch.I don't want to get on the wrong side of BirdZip.
  21. I drove out to that game. Cloudy, cold and very windy.Ah the good ol days. A dead-ball foul after we score... a missed extra point and field goal. The awful punt after getting stopped and then giving up a first down on 4th and 11.The goal line stands were great and very nice to get out of BG with a win.
  22. Does it really matter? Hunter can do the job...Mike can do the job. There are probably a dozen or more candidates who can do the job.And we will be having this same discussion in 3 years when the guy who gets hired decides to leave. My vote has always been to get someone who gives me a bunch a reasons as to why he wants to stay, not reasons as to why he wants to leave. A UA guy may be the answer as well...
  23. Another day, another crushing defeat.....They too need to start scheduling more I-AA schools to get better prepared for the tournament.Way to go Free Shoes University..Florida State Crushes Ohio State, 37-6Florida State sets NCAA postseason record with 37 runsFlorida State Crushes Ohio State, 37-6TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Stephen Cardullo set a tournament record with seven hits, including three of Florida State's NCAA-record 15 doubles, as the Seminoles routed Ohio State 37-6 on Sunday and advanced to the super regionals.Florida State (45-16) set NCAA postseason records with 37 runs, 38 hits and 66 total bases, while Cardullo tied the school mark for hits in an offensive performance the football team would've been proud of. The Seminoles set or tied 18 NCAA, school or postseason records."I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it," coach Mike Martin said. "We're sitting there in the fourth inning and I knew we were going to a super regional."Jason Stidham, the regional's most outstanding player, hit a two-run double as the Seminoles scored eight times in the first and cruised past the pitching-depleted Buckeyes (42-19), who trailed 32-0 in the fifth."Everything they did was right," said Ohio State coach Bob Todd, who went through seven pitchers in an attempt to stem the rout. "Everything we did was wrong."The teams combined for a single-game postseason record for hits (51) and tied the mark for runs, which was previously set in Miami, Ohio's 35-8 victory over Quinnipiac on June 4, 2005.Ohmed Danesh homered a drove in five runs on four hits, while Mike Meschke was 5 for 5 with a homer and four RBIs. Stidham drove in four runs and led the tournament with 12 RBIs in three games.Ohio State starter Jared Strayer allowed seven earned runs without recording an out. Andrew Armstrong, the Buckeyes' fifth pitcher, was tagged for 11 earned runs in one-third of an inning."It was a great feeling," Cardullo said. "It's definitely true that hitting is contagious."Florida State will make its ninth super regional appearance in 11 years against the Norman regional winner.
  24. when is the school going to stop being referred to as Akron University, at least by the media? When coaches, players, fans, alumni, students, staff and all Akron old timers start calling the university by it's proper name and showing some respect and school pride, then maybe the media will catch on.......until then we get what most call us...
