  1. What happened to their old coach? If I remember, he was a pretty good guy. Are they just rebuilding now? They really came on strong there for a while, I was worried they would surpass Akron and get a shot at the NCAA's first.
  2. You know, if you ask a Yooper, he is a troll......he lives under the bridge (If you get this, you probably live in Michigan). Sorry, I couldn't resist.... it's snowing and that puts the UP on my brain.
  3. Ok, it’s been about a week, but here are the attendance pics from the NIU game. I did my best to get the same angle and size for both sides, but I’m not a professional photographer. IMO, the Zips had more fans. Remember, lots of fans, like myself, were wearing blue and blended in with the bleachers. I took them at the beginning of the third quarter, and the time between shots was however long it took me to walk from the NIU side to the Akron side.
  4. JD is good, and he has instilled that new attitude, but I agree with CK, O'leary would get it before JD.
  5. If there is one thing that I've come to respect more this season, it's starting position. That's what killed us against Ball State and that's what let us dominate Can't from the get-go. If their kicking game is that good, we'll have to march down the field a lot. OTOH, Dom is WAY overdue for a return all the way. He doensn't have one yet this season and I just can't believe he'd be shutout this year. I got one of those feelings. :macc:
  6. The Rifle team soundly beat Rose-Hulman this past saturday at their place. RH's coach built a pretty darn good team over the past 10 years or so. I don't know if they are rebuilding or what, but the Zips took it to them, and didn't even have that impressive of scores. There seems to be two teams starting to separate, but they scores are stagnating which isn't what needs to happen to get to the National Championship match. Hopefully each member can bump up their scores about 5 points to put us over the top of that magical 2300. Anyway, a win is a win...nice job folks. Good luck at Palmyra! Date: December 3, 2005 Location: Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute IN Event: Akron -vs- Rose Hulman Institute of Technology The Fighting Engineers fall to Akron The University of Akron Rifle Team ended the first half of the season by handing a defeat to the “fighting engineers†of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute IN. As a testament to the depth of this young Zips squad, both the Akron Gold (4559) and Akron Blue (4464) finished ahead of the Rose team (4413). In smallbore rifle, Sophomore Stephanie Elmore lead the team with a 575 out of a possible 600 points. This is a season high score for Elmore, just one point away from her career best. Teammates Melissa Lussier (573) and Julie DeBrita (571) followed Elmore and respectfully captured the top three slots in the match just ahead of Rose’s Dave Cloutier (564). Freshman Adam Hyde turned heads with an impressive prone performance of 199 out of a possible 200 which included a perfect card of 100 out of 100. “We are steadily making progressâ€, states head coach Newt Engle, “With performances like the near perfect prone from Adam, and the inching upward averages of the rest of the team, we are on track to meet or beat our goals.†The air rifle division was all Akron as the Zips captured the top four slots at the match. Freshman Melissa Lussier was on fire and lead the team with a grand 582 out of a possible 600. “This is Melissa’s second time in the 580’s this seasonâ€, states coach Engle, “Getting into the 580’s is a notable achievement and Melissa has worked hard to earn this honor.†An having a good day with both rifles, teammate Stephanie Elmore took second place with her 577. Backed up by Michael Tokarz (573) and Megan Reinking (566). Zips Rifle will now kick back (a little) and concentrate on exams, and having a wonderful holiday. The next test for the Zips will be on January 15 when they travel to compete in the 7th annual Palmyra Invitational in Palmyra PA. This is now the largest indoor rifle competition in the US and this match will also serve as a shoulder to shoulder match with the US Naval Academy. Coach Engle states, “Needless to say, Navy is one of the best teams in the nation, but so is Akron. The outcome of this match may be surprising to everyone but us.†Smallbore Rifle Scores: *Gold team, ** Blue team 575* Stephanie Elmore 573* Melissa Lussier 571* Julie DeBrita 562** Laura Kuntz 561* Megan Reinking 556** Michael Tokarz 552** Cody Shields 552** April Engle 543 Adam Hyde Perfect 100 prone 2280 Akron “Gold†Smallbore Team Total 2222 Akron “Blue†Smallbore Team Total ============================================================== Air Rifle Individual Scores: *Gold team, ** Blue team 582* Melissa Lussier 577** Stephanie Elmore Ties Personal Best 573* Michael Tokarz 566* Megan Reinking 564** Laura Kuntz 558* Julie DeBrita 558** April Engle 543** Cody Shields 493 Adam Hyde 2279 Akron “Gold†Air Rifle Team Total 2242 Akron “Blue†Air Rifle Team Total ==============================================================
  7. I don't have any extra right now. Money is going to be very tight for about the next two months, so my little project probably won't bear fruit until next season (though I'm thinking about emptying out my change jars). I figure it's pretty simple to make, here's what I'm going to do. If you go to a craft store, they sell sheets of magnets, 1' X 2' that you can paint on. I'm going to buy some of those and spraypaint the colors I need on them. Next I'm going to blow up the logo I want on the computer and print it out the size I want it. I'm going to use that as a stencil to cut out the magnet and BAM! I've got my magnet. I also figure you could use the same approach, but use the cut-out paper as a stencil to spray over and make one big magnet. The magnet I'm thinking of is gonna be HUGE, but made of several small magnets.
  8. I'm sure many of you feel the same way I do. After 11 years of heartache (for me), we've finally broken through, if only for a moment. I'm savoring every minute of it!
  9. I hear that. Everything was Dandy for about 4 days till I got back into work....ugh!
  10. They generated more than enough interest to deserve their own box. Knowing the sheer overwhelming volume of Rifle messages, I think they'll be next
  11. Great post UA Fan. Proenza is one of those amazing people that can put an entire city on his back and turn it around. I look forward to seeing this area of the city revitalized. I thought I heard something recently about how the University would start working on revitalization on the East side of Route 8. It's amazing how much Akron has changed from the bombed out city it was when I first arrived! Downtown was a bunch of stripjoints, peepshows, empty factories and discount stores. Now there is a stadium, new parks, new buildings, and nightlife!
  12. Ditto. Hope to see a bunch of you in Detroit and look forward to a great game.
  13. OK, I looked around that website and didn't find it very user friendly. Here are a few things off the top of my head. There are some casino's downtown. Windsor Canada is right across the border, I haven't been there in 10 years, but I hear it's a good time (bring your passport!). There's Detroit Redwings Hockey in Downtown Detroit and the Detroit Pistons about 1/2 hour North of the city in Pontiac. The Lions are in Detroit too, but I don't know if they'll be playing at home while you're there. If you're the museum type there is Greenfield Village and Henry Ford museum in Dearborn. Essentially a museum to industy and a little historic town outback (might not be open in the winter). You could tour a car factory, I think the Ford River Rouge would be cool. Car factories amaze me, but then again, I'm an engineer. If you like seeing big, rich people's houses there is the Edsel and Elenor Ford house in Grosse Point, and Meadowbrook at Oakland University. There's shopping, but I'm sure that's going to be in any major city. As you can see, I'm a nerd, but hope this is a bit helpful.
  14. Memphis Fans, Can't wait to talk and see some of you guys at the game! I don't know a lot about you guys, but I've heard you've got an outstanding running back. On Detroit, I've lived in Michigan for 6 years and as a rule of thumb I avoid Detroit. Maybe I'm just bias because I grew up near Cleveland, but Detroit is a hole in the ground. I go for the Autoshow and when the Cleveland Indians come to town. The area immediately around the stadium is very nice, but don't go walking around in the rest of the city....you'll see what I mean when you arrive! They are trying to get the city ready for the Superbowl by knocking down deserted buildings. They've been doing this for YEARS but there are still tons of bombed out abandoned buildings across the street from the stadium. I guess I would suggest this website to find out a few things to do in Detroit, I'm obviously not much of a resource. Things to do in Detroit
  15. I think I would like a Dome in Akron, but doubt it will be built. Money is the reason. Here are a few tidbits to chew on and what I think of them. Domed Stadium: Downsides: Costs a lot more to build than an open air stadium. Need air handling equpment, put a roof on, and then you've got to heat and cool the thing... ...those of you who own homes know what I'm getting to. Advantages: Obviously it's climate controlled so you'll pull in more people since we are all pampered Americans. There will be more event held there, concerts and the like since it will be indoors and we may even get some type of NCAA event. It would be great for the university and the city. Any new news on the MLS team looking for a place near Akron/Cleveland to play?? I agree we should keep our facility at Lee Jackson, but this could influence the decision. Open Air stadium: Disadvantage: Weather. Can't, Army....need I say more. I had almost my entire family leave after the Army tailgate because they didn't want to sit in the rain....I don't blame them. Advantages: It's cheap, and on those warm fall days, you can't beat it! The game at Miami this year was really amazing! You'll still pull in concerts and the like, only for about 6 months of the year though. In the end, building any stadium really doesn't make a lot of financial sense. Look at Browns Stadium. It's on prime lakefront property and only gets used probaby 15-20 days of the year. The rest of the time it's empty. Sure there is the added commerce during event days, but would putting 100 million into something else help more?? Don't get me wrong, a stadium is badly needed if Akron wants to continue playing football and it will be a boost for the city and the university when it's built. I would prefer a dome, but doubt it will happen. Those are my thoughts.
  16. As long as we're throwing wishes around, here's what I would like, 1) DVD of the MACC game!!!!! 2) Magnets for my cars. I've made my own tailgating chairs and am currently working on my own car magnets since I can't buy any. 3) License plate holders. I've got a few old ones that need upgrading, and the new ones in the bookstore just flat out suck! They look like someone printed out "The University of Akron" on their Commodore 64 printer and glued it to a license plate bracket. 4) A CD with the fight song, Go Zips Go, Alma Mater, Win for Akron, .... How are you supposed to get pumped up on the way to the game, and in the parking lot without this? As you can see, my car will be very gaudy!
  17. We've still got a Bowl game to play in. Lets win that first.
  18. We see tons of photos of the other sports, just thought I would post some "Action" photos from some of the matches. Enjoy! At Coast Guard Home vs. OSU, John Jay At Morehead Home vs. USP
  19. I think everyone here will agree we got screwed. Any Akron team in that position is going to get screwed because they are outside the system and the big boys will pull rank to keep us down. That is just the way it is, nobody will be pulling for us to be on top, we'll get puched and kicked every step of the way. With that said, WHAT A SEASON! Zips soccer has absolutely nothing to hang it's head over. Against all odds they went from being unranked to holding onto the top spot nationally for a month. They made a run to the elite 8 and got beat in OT by a national powerhouse. We've got Lolla locked in and I think we get most of the team back next season right? Akron soccer got lots of media attention and I would imagine we'll be pulling in some amazing recruiting classes! I've got a feeling we'll be back in the Tourney next season! THANK YOU AKRON SOCCER!!
  20. Great Post GP1. Bottom line is give what you can, lets not argue over wording. I myself have been deliquent on this front. Equally important, IMO is to wear your Akron gear and drag as many people as you can to the games. Show them a good time, get them excited and they'll be back. I've dragged my entire family in and nearly all my friends, none of which went to UA. Though there were only 4 of us who made the game last night, my phone was ringing off the hook after Dom made his catch. You're responsible for doing something that throwing money around can't do. Spread the fever!
  21. I'm in for a pregame tailgate. We were at Hockeytown and that seemed to work well. I'll ask around work for another good place. I'm a little miffed. I never heard about an "Alumni Party"? Was that stuff on Gozips.com and I just missed it? I don't want to be leftout of the fun again!
  22. I think Luke really spread the ball around well last night. Kasparek is just one of those guys who will carry 3 or 4 typical MAC defenders about 5 yards till the 5th guy shows up. I was very glad to see him get the ball more, I think he'll add that extra dimension to the passing game the next two years.
  23. I'd like to get my hands on some of those "Fear the Roo" shirts everyone was wearing at the game and some other "MAC Champions" stuff too. I burned my cash too quickly when I got to the game and bought a "MAC Championship" shirt with the NIU and Akron helmets. I hope it's available over the Internet, because I probably won't be back in Akron till Next August. I need SOMETHING to wear on the 26th!
  24. Here we go again! I think JD has been on the chopping block once this year and this is the second time he's up for a 50 year contract. Personally, I don't think he's going anywhere. I think Novak gets a call before JD. Kelly did a hell of a job at CMU this year too. What about Western's coach Cubit, or Brandon and that media darling over in BG? I haven't been able to surf much today, but I'm sure the fact that we lost to Army and Ball State is on the haters minds and will factor in to any potential seekers. Should we lock in JD for a few more years, yes. I'm sure he got a big honking bonus for winning the MACC and getting us to a bowl. If we win the bowl, he probably gets all the bonuses in his contract. I just don't think we need to worry about him leaving right now.
  25. Yea, there was even a guy with a Can't hat on at the game. Thanks for the support Can't fans! What I should say is thanks to all the fans who are giving us congratulations. Everyone of you is a class act. It's so easy to focus on the flamers.
