I liked it! Some great plays and awesome hits. Well done!

I got to believe that the Zips are going to be able JMU. I have seen JMU play a couple of times(now living in Virginia). They are a solid team and it will probably be a good game. Akron 35 JMU 24.

I don't think our RPI can rise high enough to get an at large bid. If we win out(other than the championship game), we will need some help. We need to be a top 25 team and some national press on our streak. ESPN has us as a 13th seed currently. Usually the last at large teams are 12. We are close.

It was a disappointing blowout loss. The losses to Ball State and Buffalo along with losing the majority of events at the relay meet to Toledo and Bowling Green makes it look like a long season. The team will struggle with the top teams (EMU, Miami and Ohio). I am not sure where they will get past anyone in the MAC. It is early in the year but they are going to need to see significant improvement if they are going to get into a race with the other MAC schools. Diving continues to lead the way!

The football team went through a very rough stretch the last two years. The stadium has been empty during that stretch and numbers continue to struggle. We now have a team that can be exciting and competitive. How long will it take for the Zips to regularly put 15K in the stands? 20K? How long until we see another sellout? If the Zips remain competitive during their conference games, I think we should draw 15K for remaining home games.

The Zips have scored 118 points through three games compared to 170 for last season. It is great to be excited about football again! Can't wait to see how we compete against the MAC!

Congratulations Zips Men's Basketball Team!

Congrats on great season so far!! Keep it going!! -
I think the "A" standard is harder to hit in swimming compared to some other sports. The rule is an "A" standard swimmer can swim their "B" cuts, even if their "B" time would not have been selected for the meet. Here is a small breakdown with some conference comparisons. All conference meets are concluded. 50 Free 6 "A" cuts- no one outside of the big 4(PAC 12, SEC, B10, B12) 100 Free 4 "A" cuts-no one outside of the big 4 200 Free 6"A" cuts-no one oustide of the big 4 500 Free 6"A" cuts-1 ACC cut 200 IM 10 "A" cuts-no one outside of the big 4 200 Back 5 "A" cuts-no one outside of the big 4 The MAC is a decent conference for swimming and will have swimmers continue onto the NCAA meet, but very few conferences have people achieving "A" cuts in most events. The SEC and PAC12 are hitting them all the time but they are the ony ones.

Your standard for OK is a NCAA "B" cut and great is an "A" cut? I don't think there was any "A" cuts posted at the meet. A "B" cut is a top 8 finisher and that is what I would like to see. The standard I would use for good would times that finaling at the MAC meet. I am not worried about this team at the NCAA level. I would like to see three to four swimmers scoring at the MAC level. I think it is fair to expect Akron to have multiple scorers in each event. By the way, almost every time I listed would be #1 for DIII. This team is beyond DIII but our standard should be scoring more points at the MAC level.

The top swimmers are quality. The 400 IM time(4:17) is flat out great. The backstroker at :55, 200 free 1:50, 500 Free 4:53, 100 fly :56.0, 200 IM 2:03 are very respectable times. These swimmers are putting decent times but if you look at the results we only have one scorer per event compared to Toledo or Ohio who have four or five swimmers scoring per event.
-
Add in the fact that we have diving and BGSU doesn't and the results are not good. We scored 49 points in diving to barely pass up BGSU. The top swimmers are posting good times but they don't have enough depth to compete with the better MAC teams.

POLL: How many wins in 2012 will you be happy with?
Zips fan replied to NewZipsFan's topic in Akron Zips Football
I voted for 3-4. I do believe TB will make us a better team immediately but we weren't competitive in a lot of games last year. He is not taking a team over the hump. He is going to have to improve by two touchdowns per game to get to respectable. I think we are going in the right direction but icoach made a ton of mistakes that will take time to fix. -
Top 100 Freshman of 2011

Caleb does an amazing job! Three of the top ten players in the country is incredible! It is great to see our success will continue. -
What is up with Mike Leach? He did a great job at Texas Tech but no one is willing to touch him. I don't know what baggage he brings but he did have some exciting offense during his TT days.

I know it is too early for the computers to accurately evalute teams but it is still nice to see the Zips at the top. http://realtimerpi.com/rpi_Men.html

The team looked decent in this meet. Miami has a shot at winning the conference and swam very strong for an early season meet, so don't worry yet. If we lose to BG, Buffalo, or Ball State, then we are in for trouble. The Zips arent deep but looked good in diving, breaststroke and backstroke.

Is the VMI game the last straw for Ianello?
Zips fan replied to bobbyake's topic in Akron Zips Football
It would be great for icoach to just resign. The buyout is a difficult thing with so much time left on his contract. I am sure the university would have move him to the developmnet office if he does not agree to a buyout. I really have no faith that we will beat VMI. We have been outscored 142-17 and it could have been much worse. All three teams eased up and were capable of beating us by 50. If cincinnati didn't ease up, the might have put up 80+ points. -
Time to shut down Football -- experiment over?
Zips fan replied to K-Roo's topic in Akron Zips Football
We can't shut football down. There is no reason we should not be successful. We have the best facilities in the conference. We have a budget that is competitive with the top of the conference. We have a university surrounded by a large population base that is dying for a winner. Akron should be a contender every year. When Mike Thomas was here, I felt that Akron was on the verge of being a powerhouse within the MAC. Mack arrived and things did slow a little but were ok. The new era has me not believing at all. Icoach needs to do the honorable thing, realize this is a distaster and resign. Akron can't afford the buyout and icoach can't afford to continue this mistake. He will struggle to get another coaching job if this continues. Icoach, please resign! Let our team have a chance and start the process over again! -
I hate to be pesimistic but I really dont think we have a win this season. Toledo was just as strong as OSU and Temple could have easily made the score look worse. We are not competitive with the MAC this year. I am hoping we can pull one out against VMI, but that is the only one I see. I don't see us staying within 20 points of most of the MAC right now. There are several teams that are easily 40 points ahead of us(Temple, Toledo, NIU, Miami).

I'm skeptical either CSU or Akron's baseball team has a budget as large as $500K per year. And if you keep in mind that most of the team members are paying at least half their own way through school (many are paying the full ride) the institutional savings of cutting the sport are marginal. Akron is not going to lose baseball as it is a required MAC sport, but I could see the university saving 500K a year if they could drop. You have four coaches salaries and around ten scholarships, that alone accounts for most of it. The operating budget is not half a million, but total savings, I could see it.

hockey - off topic but!!!
Zips fan replied to bigzipguy's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I wish that would have happened as well, because it would have benefitted the Zips. But Hockey is one of the 4 most popular sports in America. I was curious to see if hockey was actually one of the 4 most popular sports in America. A quick search showed that it was fourth on several polls with auto racing/motor sports occasionally being placed ahead of hockey on some. It does list soccer as sixth which surprised me a well. -
As a person who lived in Akron for a long time, I can say I am still a big Lebron James fan. He has been a great supporter of the city, the university, and local charities. I honestly don't really understand the intense animosity some feel toward Lebron. I don't hate anyone I don't know to an significant degree.

UA football candidate named D-1 asst. coach of year
Zips fan replied to ZipRoo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Why is Fickell a superior canidate to Ianello? Because he coached at OSU? Who cares? This has so little to do with predicting the success of a person as a head coach. I remember when the search was going on, the majority of posters wanted someone with head coaching experience. When Icoach is finally relieved of his duties, I don't want an assistant coach who is trying to see if he can make it as a head coach. I want the Brian Kelly(DII national champs) or Jerry Kill(SIU I-AA powerhouse) canidate. I want to see our program hire someone who has shown they are able to be effective as a head coach. I wish the best for Fickell but I am tired of coaches being given their first head coaching jobs at the MAC level. Let him try it somewhere else. When we get rid of icoach, please hire a successful I-AA or DII head coach. -
I think they should go after Tyrone Willingham. He is a former Notre Dame, coach so he should be able to make an impact in the MAC or maybe TW can give them some recommendations.
