If you could have one or the other-a win over OSU or another MAC title. A win over OSU would do wonders for peoples in state image and would give the Zips some national media exposure, but would not secure a bowl game or anything within the conference. A MAC title gives the team a bowl game and continues to build our tradition within the conference. It also gives us two nationally televised games (MACC and bowl game).

I would take:Miami-I think they are equal to BGSU and Minny is down this yearAkron-I expect Akron to play strong Toledo-neither team played well this past weekendBGSU-great running team with strong o-lineEMU-they play everyone close-they just don't winCan't-no respect after their win at Iowa StateIndiana-WMU defense looked real bad against WVU and Indiana looked good week 1Ohio-MAC teams should beat Sun Belt teams but who knows.

Because sometimes it is fun to talk about other schools and conferences that compete with Akron and the MAC. Great to see Michigan go down, and I am looking forward to that team in Columbus going down to the Zips soon!

Very impressive to beat a B12 team on the road. Great start for the conference! -

I have no problem rooting for any MAC school in the OOC games. We need the conference to do well. If our conferencemates get the job done now, it will look much better when we beat the flushes later in the year. -
Listen On-your-knees-for-your-flagship, if you don't have something better to do than monitor speeches by The University of Akron's president and post on a Zips athletics board you need to broaden your horizons. I am not going to look up any stats but I can tell you this much, I have no interest in OSU. I was happy with my time at The Univeristy of Akron feel that they do a great job in preparing students for the future. I am happy that Dr. Prozena is the president and feel that he has done a great job of promoting Akron. You may have your OSU pride, but not everyone in Ohio does. Many students choose to go to Akron, Can't, Miami, BGSU, UT, Ohio rather than OSU. I don't need to insult OSU to know that Akron is a much better place.

I believe the vote for Duke comes from Steve Spurrier. He used to coach there and always votes for them at #25 on the pre-season poll.

There is some info on Razor's Blog about this.

I believe that the men's swim team was suspended in 1985 with the promise to be reinstated after the new pool was complete. When the pool was finished the team was never reinstated. The men's tennis team was dropped after the 1997-1998 season. Men are not allowed to participate on women's varsity teams.

Awesome job by the track program again. The women's track/CC program has turned into our best women's program year in and year out. It is great to see the men battling for the title as well. Coach Mitchell and his staff do an amazing job!

It is nice to see the golf program step up. They were winning until the final round. It looks like everyone shot poorly on the back nine of the final round, which allowed EMU to slip by. I don't know if it was weather related or just fatigued, but it was the difference in the tournament. Second place at the conference championship is the best showing I can remember. Nice job Zips!!

The average rating was from one of the posters and not someone in the know. He rated based on what people posted and no one posted the Zips recruits. Keith Dambrot did a great job with recruiting this season and our team is considered a threat to win it by those who know the sport. Don't panic about what an idiot poster says on the MAC boards.

I don't think this is even close to being accurate. First off, there is no way anyone would consider the MVC below the A-10. Outside of Memphis, C-USA is downright dredful. The WAC had Nevada this year but they are on the same level as the MAC. The WAC is in the shadow of the PAC-10 and we are in the shadow of the Big 10. Most announcers refer to the BCS schools as major and all other D-I schools as "mid majors". I rarely hear the term low major and never 2nd tier. The only schools that are close to being referred to as majors are the Mountain West and the Missouri Valley. -

I hate to see schools dropping athletic opportunities. It has become more common for ADs to cut programs rather than work within their current budgets. It seems when teams are dropped it is quickly followed by other programs within their department getting a raise. I know rifle has a small budget but their success is a source of pride for the whole university and am glad we provide that opportunities for our students.
-
The MAC is the best place for us currently. The A-10 might be slightly better in basketball but as a whole the MAC is a much stronger conference. C-USA was rated lower than the MAC in basketball and is a parallel move in football, add in additional costs for travel and it would be a dumb move for the Zips. The Big East has made no indication that they are going to split or looking for new members. If they ever get to that point, you can count on UCF, ECU, and Memphis, being the top three in line. Their football and basketball attendance numbers destroy ours. We need several years with multiple MAC titles before this becomes a real issue.

That is a great article! I hope things go well for Andy on draft day!

Just a small point as it was mentioned twice, football is a head count sport for scholarships meaning anyone who gets a scholarship is a full scholarship, their are no partials in football.I am looking at this kids speed and v-jump and thinking his numbers are definitely D-IA. He is getting looks from are D-IA schools and he is in-state. I hope we do pursue him. JD and crew have done an excellent job on the recruiting end. They will be able to evaluate and determine if he is worth offering. First and foremost I want Akron to have an outstanding recruiting class, if the athletes are from OH then that is an additional plus.

This is bad news for the entire MAC. This will put a black eye on our conference as a whole. The last thing I want is a scandal that will bring questions about the validity of MAC games. I hope Toledo does a very thorough investigation and gets rid of anyone remotely involved. I also hope that this is restricted to a player incident and not an institutional incident. If no coach or administrator had any knowledge and acts appropriately now that information is found, I don't think Toledo will suffer huge penalties from the NCAA.

Looks like Hipsher may be unemployed again...
Zips fan replied to The Hip Zip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Dan was a great guy and I feel that he is a capable head coach. He brought a team in bad shape up to a competitive level. When Hipsher was let go, the team had fallen below .500 and it was time to go, but they had several winning seasons. He left the team stronger than when he arrived. He has some conflicts with players over priorities but that is expected. He wanted the players in his program to achieve more than the players were willing to give. I wish Dan luck and if he does end up at BG don't plan on those being easy wins. There is a lot of pride for a coach at his alma mater and I think Dan would do a great job. -
I remember when Huggins was there OSU wanted no part of the Bearcats. The Suckeyes played Toledo at Toledo several years back. The Rockets won and the suckeyes have not played a MAC since. Who cares about some schools a couple of hours away anyways? Well, beside smg.

I am an Akron fan which makes me a MAC fan as well. I will definitely be rooting for Miami against the Ducks. Anytime a MAC opponent is playing out of conference I root for them. The success of MAC teams against non-MAC opponents helps Akron.

I know everyone on this board is very angry at the exclusion from the NIT. The fact that they have idiots for a panel left a very deserving team from enjoying the post season. I feel the NIT needs to change their selection process to allow teams to accurately gage their status for both tournaments. I put together a sloppy attempt to see what another option would look like. This has team in the top 100 for RPI and Sagragin listed. I gave each team a score from 100-1 based on their ranking within each system. Then I included the coaches poll and gave the 40 teams points from 100-60. The teams that did not receive votes could receive a maximium of 50 for this spot. I averaged the RPI and Sagarin together for those not receiving votes.EX: Kentucky RPI 89 points, Sagarin 81 points, no votes in polls 50 points=total/3 73.33 (26th ranked school-deserving of a NCAA at-large bid). I think moving to C-USA would be a huge mistake. First off, their basketball is ranked lower than the MAC. The only thing saving them is Memphis and who knows how long until the bolt for the Big East. Secondly, their football is on par with the MAC. This would be a lateral move at best. Next, we would lose our geographical rivalries. Finally, the travel expense to play Rice, SMU, Houston, and Tulane would bankrupt our budget. C-USA is not the answer, I don't know what is the answer but definitely not C-USA.

Is this heresay or is written somewhere that we would have been a 10 seed. I would have been very happy with the 10 seed.
