He's quit trying to bank-in 3-pointers. I like that improvement.

Where's that Keener "R" when you really need it... It was a decent crowd, The Zips played absolutely ZERO defense in the first half, and gave the crowd little to stand up and cheer about. If Big Dog isn't giving any effort, why should the crowd? Ditto our guards, who let OU's perimeter players blow past them with ease. In the second half, the game got out of hand in an instant. Even when OU got it down to 12 points, there was no doubt the Zips would win. Energy-wise, Tuesday night games in January are-what-they-are at the JAR. Get some beers in everyone's bellies on a Friday or Saturday night, and the energy will pick up.

Nice win tonight, but it doesn't mean much if we lay an egg on Friday. It's time to put the foot on the gas and send a message to the MAC that it's "the Zips...and everyone else". Poke is just fun to watch. At times he looks all elbows and knees... like a newborn baby deer. But those alley-oops he pulls down from the stratosphere and slams home are flat-out awesome. Ditto his blocks. If he keeps improving, look out in 2017-18! I about had a stroke when Big Dog surrendered that easy layup after he threw the ball away just prior to the end of the half. With 0 fouls, he should have sent a message with a strong block effort. Soft play. And then he watches as an OU player throws an uncontested 2 down at the halftime buzzer. The only person having a bigger coniption than me was KD. Glad Coach's motivational halftime speech resonated! I really appreciate how TDM 11 comes in ready to play. It's tough coming off the bench, but he can do it as well as anyone. I love how Ivey values the 2-point shot as much, or more than the 3. That's a rare commodity in 2017. I still wish Kwan had one more year. He's such an improved player this year. Throw Utomi into our 3-point shooting arsenal, and look out MAC! We lose absolutely nothing when we go to our bench. Sometimes we get better! Look at the depth on other MAC teams. Our program is comparatively pretty amazing. Dog remains unstoppable when he wants to be, and in the 2nd half he wanted to be. Absolutely dominant performance...yet again. The MAC MVP is his to lose. Nice job Zips! Back it up on Friday!!

Bobcat Attack Game Thread Not much swagger to be found.

I will learn a lot tonight. I want to see if we can defend Kaminski. I want to see what Big Dog does when the defense fronts him and keeps him from getting on the low block. I want to see how Tavian matches up against OU's guards. And if he can continue getting increased minutes. Can we get some consistency out of Antino? How will the Freshman respond to getting pushed around on their home floor (OU games are always chippy), in front of a 5k crowd? Can we keep our home win streak rolling (3rd longest in the nation)?

Thanks, Dave.

In a nutshell, after they were done discussing his offensive game, he was asked "What parts of your game do you need to work on...defense?" He immediately replied, "That's where I need to get better." He mentioned the speed of the college game being a tougher adjustment on the defensive side of the ball.

He questioned his own defense in the post game interview .

1995 - Lee Owens's first season after the hellish end to the Faust era. That was one of the worst games in Rubber Bowl history. Sucked to see 1-AA YSU out-sizing us at just about every position. -

Keeping an eye on the OSU basketball this season...if the Zips don't win the MAC, I predict a Buckeyes/Zips NIT rematch. Thad is bad. -

Pretty simple stuff. If I spent 5 seconds worrying about Jerome Lane's mommy's Tweet pouting about Jo Jo Natson being voted more valuable than Jerome...OMG - The truth hurts, mom. He was. If I spent 5 seconds fretting over Tommy Woodson's Tweet that "They done me shady" after he didn't play in the OU game.... OMG - You did the Zips shady by weighing in at 260 lbs when we needed you at QB a couple years ago. At the end of the 2016 season you couldn't pick up your right arm, let alone throw a football 50 yards. Get over it and have a great, healthy 2017 senior season. A OL accepts the chance to play in the Rose Bowl instead of the Potato Bowl...and that's a knock? Really? A NFL-caliber WR wants to drop Western Cult to focus on an NFL football career, and that's a knock? From everything I've seen, he'll be drafted. All this stuff could certainly be apocalyptic. Or, it could make me *yawn* To each his own. Go Zips! -

The 5th year grad transfer rule giveth...and the 5th year grad transfer rule taketh away... We've been lucky to avoid the problems of early NFL departures and key 5th year players transferring. It was bound to happen sooner or later. What if Dambrot lost Big Dog and Kwan to transfer this year? It realistically could have happened...it happened in 2015/16 when Cleveland State lost grad players to Wichita State, Michigan State and Louisville(?). Now CSU is losing to Northern Kentucky. W/o Dog and Kwan, we'd be in the same boat. Hopefully we have an incumbent to take LTT's place, and use his scholarship for a grad transfer D-lineman. -

I wonder if, once you graduate, you can transfer without penalty as many times as you'd like (2 transfers is probably the max possible)? Redshirt Year 1 Play Years 2 and 3 at school A Graduate Transfer to school B and play Year 4 Transfer to school C and play Year 5 -

Bummer to lose a solid senior left tackle. Luckily we have some good depth on the OL now-a-days. Quigly did a really nice job at center when he got a chance to play against Ball State. Maybe whatever shuffling of the line occurs gives him a chance to strut his stuff this fall. Or maybe another grad transfer shows up. OL is the least of my worries in 2017. -

Zips @ Central Michigan (Keene to NBA draft)
Captain Kangaroo replied to Dr Z's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Really nice MAC road win for the Zips. Especially with the injured/ill Hughes and Dunn-Martin not being able to give us many minutes off the bench. The starters logged a lot of minutes, and still finished strong. I don't know that our defense will ever show up this season. But these Zips seem to both enjoy, and excel at playing a fast, run and gun pace. Kwan and Dog playing at a Power 5 level. Fun stuff! -

Back when Dambrot got started, the local Joyce/Travis/Wood guys pulled us out of the Hipsher malaise and took us to the point of competing for MAC championships. It would be great if this local "Fab 5" could do the same thing on the gridiron! -
Zips vs. Western Michigan- 1/6/17
Captain Kangaroo replied to clarkwgriswold's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
It was very fortunate that we had our top 3 guards go stone-cold from 3-point land, yet still emerge with a win. The bulk of our looks were wide-open 3's, and with with Antino/Josh/Noah shooting 40% from 3-land in 2016-17, I'll take that all day long. Kwan's been awesome. Clutch 3-pointers to close out the half, and then the game. I wish he had another year remaining. Tavian gave us a great lift when we needed it. I wish he got a few more minutes, but KD elected not to play him because he'd missed practice due to pink eye. You don't practice, you can't play. Josh wasn't himself Friday night. He had a couple of his fingers taped, and I have to believe there was something wrong with his hand. He couldn't control the ball when dribbling, and couldn't shoot either. Ivey gives us a dimension we haven't had on any other Dambrot team - an athletic slasher that isn't tethered to the bench! Dog is such a good passer...with Ivey slicing to the hole and two 40% 3-point shooters spaces at the 3-line, we're going to run more teams off the floor than we'll struggle. As someone stated earlier - the Big Dog's gotta stay healthy. Kwan too. Does Big Mike have a 10 point game in him? I gotta believe at some point that he breaks out. Looking forward to the CMU game. I think we'll dominate. The entire guard group can't possibly have another outing like Friday.
