ABJ on the Beginning of Zips' Fall Camp
Captain Kangaroo replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football
You always wonder how a "West Virginia HS Defensive POTY" ends up with the Zips. Now you know...he has "baggage." Add him to the long list of too-good-too-be-true Zip recruits. Marcus Sanders...EJ Lilley...Nate Robinson...David Harvey...Derrick Tarver... -
If you were looking for an Ianello Pipeline, it looks like he's got one running from Warren Harding to Akron.

Those are 10 questions Michael Beaven should be answering for me.
-
How many C's are in a Serbian Scrabble game? 90? It should be worth 0.3, not 3.
-
Outstanding! It looks like he'll be joining his Serbian squad in POOL B for the games. It'll be interesting to see how he does. Hopefully this will help him in preparing for BOTH the 2011-2012 Zip season AND his subsequent European career. I hope the Serb coach teaches him the art of the lay up. He'll increase is scoring average by 6ppg this season if he can consistently make the 2-ft bank shot.

ABJ Article on Zips' Canada Trip

FWIW - Brian Wagner went to a D-6 high school. He competes pretty well on the D-1 level. I recall Hipsher recruit Kevin Covert. He averaged 32ppg in high school, and was totally overwhelmed in his short stint @ UA. Brian Wood was Colorado's all-time leading scorer. He couldn't get a shot off at the D-1 level. But times are different today. The AAU circuit gives small school kids the ability to play, and be evaluated against, top-tier competition. I am sure Justice can ball. -

What is the highest ppg any KD-era player has averaged for a single college season? Without looking, I'll say 13.8ppg. I think is is safe to say Justice won't get close to 20ppg. But I think we have a chance to be successful in 2011-12 anyhow. -
Football Gameplan's 2011 MAC Preview Video
Captain Kangaroo replied to EmDiggy's topic in Akron Zips Football
Based upon what I saw on the field last year, it is pretty easy to make a case that we had scrubs for receivers. I'll be sure to inform some people who evaluate football talent for a living that they've completely screwed up by showing an interest in these two "scrubs". And since we've gotten this good news about two of our former receivers in the last few days, couldn't one conclude that these guys may have had much better numbers if they had a QB who would have delivered the ball to them with any kind of remotely reasonable consistency? It's a much stronger argument when you turn it around the other way, considering the facts. Should I sit back now and wait for a return to the "then it must have been our OL" argument? I can't wait until Nicely gets a mayfly look in 2013 Browns camp. -

Each of those guys was about 1/2 as good as Deryn Bowser or Andre Jones. I'm rooting for them, but expect that their camp participation will have the staying power of a mayfly. -

Remember - he doesn't have Harvey or Arthur to throw to. He has Dropsey and Fumbles. I could see us winning 3 with Getsy last year, but no way 5. Hell...in his senior year Luke was surrounded by a TON better talent and only won 5. -

One of the Montreal players who was staying at the team hotel phoned room service asking for some pepper. "Black pepper, or white pepper?" asked the concierge. "Toilette pepper," said the point guard. -

Maybe a better QB would be the best solution to a bad QB situation? Put Luke Getsy at QB for the Zips last season...how many games does he win? -

Thanks Doc!! I try to trim the fat and give you guys what you want! AJ Price will be a stud for you guys... Trust! I second Dr. Z's "Thank you!" I appreciate the effort you put into the production, and I learned a lot about all the 2011 MAC programs. I like the positive angle you took on all the programs...even the worst of the bunch only contained "Reasons for Optimism." -
Akron vs. Cleveland State

I say we meet at the Lizard in Boston Heights...then hit the one in Macedonia...then the one in Independence...then the one across from The Q...then stagger to the Convo. Who's with me? is this on a bus??? ...or are we drinking and driving???Dave offered to be the designated driver. -

The VCU Frosh doesn't play too much (yet, at least). The VCU site says he's their 1st 7-footer in a decade. VCU's impact guys are the 6' 9'ers.Without belaboring a point...Zeke is a gift. I don't expect KD to pull another 7-footer off the street any time soon. KD doesn't seem to go for the "project" type players (a la John Edwards). It would be great to get one or two 6' 9" bangers. -

We still need a center..not another undersized PF.I am not disappointed in this at all. I hope KD will go out there and find a true big now.I forget...how tall were Butler and VCU's centers? Butler had a 6' 11" kid that played about 20mpg, and Matt Howard was 6' 8".VCU didn't have any 7-footers.KD needs to find another rebounding machine. Then we're set. -
I like your thoughts, and I'm not trying to be a dick here, but I think many of these points have a counter-point:1. Jawon Chisholm - looks like he has all-mac talentMaybe Ianello's best recruit thus far. While I've never seen him play, everything points to him being the real deal.2. Anthony Holmes - Going to be a very solid db...all mac potentialMaybe. Too soon to say. 3. Tyler Williams - Is going to be the most explosive player the zips have had in over a decade.I've watched his all star games, and he looks great amongst some very highly-touted BCS recruits. He could win us some games with his kick return ability alone.4. Antoine Russell - Showed flashes as a true freshman and I think he will be much improved this year. He'll need to improve. I didn't see many flashes last season. 5. Nick Rossi - a top 10 ILB recruit in the nation.Excited about him. I dream of having TWO Brian Wagner's at LB this season.6. Keith Sconiers - Another highly touted receiver that looks like the real deal. He'll need to improve. I didn't see many flashes last season.7. Zack D'Orazio - Another solid athlete that looked damn good in the spring for being a freshman.Brookhart recruit. 8. Nico Caponi - Solid D line player as a freshman and played well this spring.Brookhart recruit.9. John Griggs - His video looks like he is a long, lean and explosive pass rusher unlike we have seen at UA in a while.A lot of Brookhart recruits had great videos...and then disappeared. I gotta wait a while before I put Griggs on any top-recruit lists.10. Andrew Bohan - Solid and well rated OL that played well in both of the post season all star games against very high talent.I agree he has a lot of potential. And we really need OL's.11. Clayton Moore - SEC talent that is very intriguing and adds much needed depth to the position.Agreed. Nicely needs pushed...and Ianello needs a quality fall-back option if Nicely falters. Rogers never fit that bill.12. Kyle Pohl - Another highly touted young QB that looked the part in the All Star game.Time will tell. It's tough to grade a coach's recruits when said coach has a re'sume' of only 2 classes. And 1 season played. Hopefully our OL is decent, some WR's emerge (BIG question mark), Williams scores us 4 or 5 special teams TD's and Chisolm is the real deal. That's 5 wins, and I'm a believer.

Akron vs. Cleveland State

Come on Dave, you know TV wasn't invented yet when you were a child! Hell..."talkies" weren't yet invented. -
Preseason stuff is worthless. SID's send out their .pdf's and highlight films and the "watch lists" print some inane listing of 90 guys.Dwight Smith was 1st Team All American despite playing on a bad Zips team. Hopefully #34 has a great year and gets some meaningful post-season accolades too. It can be done.

Who wins? WNT or Zips?
Captain Kangaroo replied to psc2009's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
I will give RACER his props for answering the question here. How many 2010 Zips are in the MLS? How many women's players are in the MLS? Do you think, if there was a woman who could compete at the MLS level, that a team would draft her?Dr. Z's original question - "Could an elite boys HS team, or Prep Academy team, beat the US Woman's World Cup Team?" is more debatable. More controversial, but more debatable.
