Akron September opponent's coach in hot water?
Captain Kangaroo replied to Dr Z's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Who is harmed by Pryor breaking ncaa rules? I would say that almost nobody is harmed by him breaking ncaa rules. Why?....Well, when everyone is already breaking the most moronic rules in the world, nobody can be harmed by the actions. It hurts the integrity of the game. Once Pryor is taking gifts and money, he owes someone. If you are a college QB and you owe someone, point shaving becomes a real threat. -
A buddy of mine used to have a motto when he went out to bars: "Go fat early." I'm glad Ianello isn't going fat early. The fatties will still be there at 2am.

Recruiting Class of 2011

"They said that because I have had some trouble with it and it's a recurring thing, there is a good possibility that it could pull again and even tear," Rossi said in a phone interview." Great.... Anyone else see a redshirt resulting from this injury? -
Murray commits to getting benefits. When Bin Laden was killed...do you think it had any effect on Al Qaeda's recruiting?

Zach's posts tell me Ianello's burnin' up the recruiting trail! When will that break-thru recruit commit?!

Always fun to compare the promotional efforts of our MAC bretheren to that of our Zips Marketing Machine.

K.e.n.t. Basketball Coming to Akron
Captain Kangaroo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
There has been no marketing at Akron since Joe Dunn stepped down as Sports Information Director, what, twenty years ago? Mike Thomas era saw a ton of Marketing progress. The AK-Rowdies were formed...new logos (H-U-G-E improvement to the school's image, apparel sales, etc)...numerous promotions (some bad, some good, but promotional efforts none-the-less). Mike Thomas & Co. would never have stayed in Akron longer than they did (3.5 years?)...but if they could have stayed another 3.5, Zips fans wouldn't be dreaming of taking "The Next Step," we'd be living "The Next Step." -

MAC Extends Commish Contract to 2016

It's no different than the creative resume writing that goes on with AD's. Every AD ever hired magically: "Increased donations at <insert previous employer here> by <insert astronomical number here>. As Public Enemy once said 20 years ago... -
I used to be a proponent of a bigger arena, but something around 6k-7k max seems about right. I think our attendance will rise appreciably if we can just guarantee people a nice seat rather than a wooden bench.

Get Mike Birkbeck, TW. Unless they are willing to pay him $150k+ and improve the facilities, that is not going to happen. Then we should disband the program. What's the use of bringing in another journeyman coach, paying him nothing, keeping the facilities in the bottom tier, and firing him in 4 years? Take a big cut, or get out of the business. Dambrot used to play baseball @ UA...give him and extra $100k and tell him to coach 'em up!

It isn't just sports fans. It's stupid people in-general. Look at every political or religious leader that's been rocked by some scandal. The all get re-elected. Their churches are all full for their 1st sermon after exiting The Big House. People could care less if Ray Lewis was scrubbing some dead guy's blood off his arms in a hotel bathroom...they still buy a "LEWIS" jersey for their 6-year olds. Let's be fair to our Buckeye brethren: Ohio State fans are no different than any other group of stupid people. -

the amount of international students we have, we could do very well at it... Back in the 70s, the Buchtelite regularly included coverage of the table tennis team, including match results against BIG name schools across the country and injury reports, until it was discovered a couple of guys were just making the stuff up and sending the reports to the editor. Did you get in big trouble?

Sucks to be the low-life reporter assigned to drive to Jeannette Pa to hassle the kid's mom. -
Mike Birkbeck has been K.e.n.t.'s pitching coach for quite a while. He's the only Akron player I know of to play in the majors. I think he has to the the #1 candidate for the HC position. John Massarelli had a decent minor league catching career, and coached in the minors. He's another logical candidate.

He may out-draw InfoCision with that place? I wonder if it will take any business away from B-Dubs...who's had a figure four leg lock on the combo campus food & bar scene for almost 2 decades.

On a serious note - Doug's post, on the day after Memorial Day, ranks as the all-time most poorly-timed and ill-conceived consecutive sentences ever typed on our site.

I blame ESPN, Kirk Herbstreit and the NCAA's vendetta against Ohio State. Pryor should be the starter on opening day, and Tressel should be the coach. Anything less is just flat-out unjust! Zips fans are jealous of OSU? Jealousy of herpes just ain't right. It just keeps getting better. -
I vote Anthony Buford - 3 spectacular years at UA, and 1 year as starting guard for Bob Huggins' Final Four team @ UC. What other guard have the Zips possessed that would be good enough to start on a Final Four team? Other than Alex Abreu? Marcel Boyce was also at the top.

I remember a column in the Beacon Journal several years ago that featured a big pic of five-or-so Zips players piling into the back of a pick up truck to carpool to the Rubber Bowl for practice. Ohio State vs. Akron -- The Haves vs. the Have-nots -
Instead of agreeing, you should slap them in the face and call them a bunch of bitches. +1

People would have laughed in 1985 if anyone speculated that the head coach at Notre Dame would soon be at Akron. I don't want Tressel. But if Ianello pulls-off another 1-11 season, we'll be in the market for a new coach, and Proenza will be looking for a way to fill a very expensive stadium that's drawing roughly 27,000 under capacity. Tressel is Angelina Jolie...but with herpes. Hot chicks aren't so unobtainable when they have herpes.
