Ianello Press conference from OSU
Captain Kangaroo replied to ZipGoTheZippers!'s topic in Akron Zips Football
Golden was 9-4 in his 3rd year in the MAC. Temple was an Independent in 2006. So my original criteria stands.Golden also won 4 games in his 1st MAC year, after that 1-11 inaugural season. That's what I expect of Ianello. At minimum. Good discussion. -
Ianello Press conference from OSU

Good luck finding any text where I say Al Golden isn't a good football coach. I'll give you 25 years to check...starting...now. You act like, just because we seem to be following the Temple Plan, that we are guaranteed "Temple Results." Just because Ianello "devoured" a book by Vince Lombardi doesn't mean he's Vince's second coming.Other than gutting the team, and being 1-11 last season, there's no tangible evidence that we're on track to make a Temple Turnaround. You've followed Zips football as long as me...maybe longer. How can you question anyone being skeptical. The guy is 1-12? How is a Year 5 Championship such a slam dunk? It wasn't in shambles. "Shambles" is what Owens inherited, where only 3 of a 25 kid recruiting class graduated. If Jacquemain doesn't stuff his backpack full of locker room goodies, we're .500 in what turned out to be his last season. Brookhart beat a bad 1-AA team 41-0 at home, with apparently terrible players. Ianello lost to one. You mean when Faust turned the team over to Owens? In Owens first year he went 2-9. After than, 4-7. In my post I state 4 wins is expected of Ianello in year #2. Why is that so insane? Owens did it with worse players, in the Rubber Bowl, with garbage facilities! Or, UA couldn't afford to eat his contract. To be clear - after 6 years, it was time for Brookhart to go. The topic isn't Ianello vs. Brookhart. Caring, and knowing what you're doing are two totally different things. Proenza is a genius. But he knows less about football than Zach. He's entrusted Wistercill to pick a winner. If he was wrong, we will not have good football @ Infocision until 2018, at the earliest. The same 25 year time frame to find where I said to fire the coach applies. Start the clock whenever you'd like. On paper, yes. But on paper, everyone that attends an expensive motivational seminar will be a successful CEO.The statement stands: There are no excuses for bad football any longer. Great practice facility. Great stadium. The dude needs to start winning this season...even if it is only 4-wins. The winning needs to start. -
It should really help our RPI?I heard KD wanted to beat them 3 times in their place in a single season, but Senderoff would only agree to two.

Ianello Press conference from OSU
Captain Kangaroo replied to ZipGoTheZippers!'s topic in Akron Zips Football
Lucky me...do you know how many football building processes I've endured over the past 25 years? The thought of waiting another 3.9 seasons is nauseating. Especially for a conference like the MAC. A good coach can turn a bad MAC program into a +.500 program in 3 seasons, maximum.A bad one can turn you into EMU or K.e.n.t. State. There are no excuses for bad football any longer. Great practice facility. Great stadium. The dude needs to start winning this season...even if it is only 4-wins. The winning needs to start.I did like how iCoach responded to the O$U clown that asked: "So who from Ohio State stood out to you?" That reaction made me like him a tiny bit more than before the video. -
Jared Province and Nate Schuler are examples of recent small-school (D5) "studs" that didn't last 2 seasons with the Zips.D'Orazio looks like a keeper.Coming from a D-6 HS that has been a elite program since the dawn of high school football (at that level), I can say you get a D-1A player through your doors maybe once per decade. In my senior year, our QB got a scholarship to OU. The McDonald QB from last season took a track scholarship to K.e.n.t. State. In between...a 26-year span...I don't think there was another D1-A player. Several played for YSU, and D-III schools like Mount Union, but no D-1A.

There are some posters seem to scan the ZN. for "personal attacks" with a fine-tooth comb, and hit the panic button way, way too often. Finding phantom attacks where none exist. I don't use the roll-eyes emoticon for sarcasm. A well-written post doesn't need it. I am thinking of making our board automatically turn the words "personal attack" into "fluffy bunnies," much like K.e.n.t. turns into Can't. I think it would make the board a better place.

Someone needs to start a "Why the Zips defense is better" thread. It will be a bright spot for the Zips this year. I can't do it all around here. Like you, I think most level-headed posters are waiting to see how the Zips fare in game #2 before making any substantial observations on the defense. The Ohio State match up was a really bad barometer. The Temple game is a lot like the Marshall games of several years ago. The Zips are a sub .500 team, and Temple should be seeing some votes in the "others" group for Top 25 consideration. But a good game plan, execution and a home crowd gives the Zips a great shot at an upset. We should not get blown out this week. We should give the Owls all they can handle.

Amen. It is so refreshing seeing a more tough-nosed defense w/ 4 DL. If we get shoved around w/ 4 DL, so be it; our opponent deserves to win. But I was so sick and tired of watching our 3DL D get shoved up & down the field year-after-year. Seeing 5 defensive bodies on the line of scrimmage on 3rd and short, instead of 3, was a dream come true. I almost cried.

About the same as Rob Ianello would give for Luke Getsy.
-
Was it Steve Spurrier that said, after administering a beat down and getting the pouty attitude from the opposing coach - "If you don't like getting beat 52-0, get better." What would Ianello have done if he were on the Liberty staff a few years ago when Lee Owens on-side kicked, up 48-14?

In 2011, which is worse - Getting destroyed on Twitter? Getting destroyed on the field? I think more people are concerned with Twitter.

A 3-win season with a 12-game schedule, 6 home games, 7 MAC opponents + FIU and a 1-AA school...would not be progress.

UA-OSU Un-official Watch Party?
Captain Kangaroo replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
I can't read mile-long posts with bold lettering. I assume it was an Ohio State fan telling Akron fans how stupid they are, on the Zips Message Board, with some screen name that infers they're a Zips fan, when they really aren't. Happens all the time here. Examples please. No, I'm not expecting a response. ZipsWin! -
Captain's Blog - Ohio State Game
Captain Kangaroo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Brookhard did NOTHING offensively in that game. The defense worked their ass off, but Brookhart was intent to run clock and punt. Stec punted 14...18 times in that game? Bubble screens and run-middle. That's it. The score was close because the defense played great, Stec punted like Ray Guy, and O$U had something like 5 turnovers. Offensively, Brookhart was 100% content to run clock. He did not try to beat Ohio State. If you want to beat Ohio State, or at least score an offensive point, you need to be creative, and get the ball downfield. Brookhart didn't do it, and neither did Ianello. And neither scored an offensive point. The Brookhart O$U game was nice because it was close, but if you're telling me Brookhart did anything offensive to try and win the game, I 100% disagree. -
The game was actually closer than I expected. I said 65-7. O$U's playcalling, and the adequate performance of our defensive line, kept it "close." Regarding the board's outcry over Ianello -- Seriously...what did you expect? The guy was 1-11 last year. He lost at home to a 1-AA program. He gutted the team, and is playing with 7 scholarships under the 85 limit. Regarding our offensive ineptitude-- We have a new QB, new WR's, new OL, new RB's...how do you go into the house of a Top 20 team and do anything else but run a completely vanilla offense? These guys hardly know each other's names. Even with 10 players removed from their roster, Ohio State still has 40 players that would be all-MAC if they transferred to our conference. I don't think the Zips have ONE that would be All Big Ten Honorable Mention. Maybe Wagner? It was nice to see a field goal attempt rise into the air, towards the goal post. I don't miss those missiles into the Zips lineman's butts. Moore looked composed early, then quickly unraveled as the game progressed. It will be interesting to see if the 6' tall Moore keeps getting balls swatted back at his grill when he throws against non-BCS lineman. #15 looks like a player. We need to get him the ball. I"ve seen the Zips play BCS opponents everywhere, Ohio State, Wisconsin, NC State, Tennessee, Nebraska, Pitt, Va Tech and on and on. I've seen the Zips play them at various points in their respective eras...when they peaked, and when they were in the abyss. Yesterday's game brought to mind only two prior games where the Zips totally tanked it...showed up, took the paycheck, and left. Pitt under Owens. And Ohio State, with Brookhart. As a fan, you HATE those games because you've got nothing to cheer for. 3-and-out, punt punt punt punt (nice punts though).... I'd rather lose 65-20 and try, than 42-0 running it up the gut. The going rate for tickets to the O$U/Akron game was $70. So to travel to Columbus with a family of four, to watch your team essentially lay down, cost Joe Akron about $400 after parking, gas and everything else. Screw that. Ianello is really making me re-think traveling to support the Zips on the road. And let me be clear - the players didn't lay down. The staff did. The players did the best with what they were given. Absolutely brutal day to play football. Things can go either of two ways now. Temple is coming to town. If you are a Kool Aid drinker, you say that Ianello was holding everything back, and that Sept 10th is going to be an entirely different story. We'll be against someone our own size. And iCoach is going to open up the playbook. iCoach is going to give the Zips Faithful something to cheer about. If you are a Drano-chugger, you expect to see iCoach highlight the same old 6 offensive plays we saw this week. Trot on the FG unit when he should be going for a 4th down conversion. Talk about the building process. Take another 30+ point loss. Temple is no slouch. They are a legit lower-tier bowl team. They have the potential to roll us much like Northern Illinois last season. And Cincinnati put up 72 against Austin Peay last night. Week 3 looks like an O$U repeat. I'm not playing Drano Pong in Lot 9 after getting whipped by O$U. Our program is no where near being able to run with the big dogs at this time. But I do need to see vast improvement on the offensive side of the ball over the next 2 weeks. Otherwise, we're going to make EMU and VMI look like BCS programs. Anyone see Ball State beat Indiana last night? See you Lot 9'ers around 1:30pm Saturday (son has a Saturday morning baseball game, so we'll be a little late). Hopefully no hurricane remnants to deal with!

The 10 Ten Reasons Why UA Might Give OSU a Game

Love the O$U education -- "johnny, you single handedly have demonstrated why akron's undergraduate program has such a $@%! pour reputation " Poor that O$U douche another drink. -
If he was an "Iron Man" he'd be allowed to tote the rock in the red zone!! He's a 2-way player...give him the damn ball, iCoach! In lieu of 34, hopefully Rossi can tote it!
-
Temple is a good team. One of the big differences will be the fact that we are playing that at home. The spread on that game won't be 30+ like it is this week. I took Temple -29 1/2 last season and won big!

I hope Marchese is good. But he couldn't beat-out Branko or Igor in 2 seasons. Zach Derr didn't gave a strong leg, but he was dead-nuts accurate. If Marchese is similar, I'm ecstatic. We need to be better than 50% on our field goals if we're to win any games this season. We don't have the offensive firepower to overcome a bad kicking game.
