While you were gone we filled our Defensive Coordinator position. I lobbied as had as I could on your behalf, be UA decided to go for a guy that couldn't stop Northern Illinois, Ball State or North Dakota State while coaching at Big 12 and Big 10 schools.

Dials, Joyce, Travis, Middleton and Wood. Tell me which 2011 Zips starters would beat out any of that starting 5. Does that answer what type of season we SHOULD expect? Those guys won as many championships as this years team. Exactly. If that crew won nothing, how can anyone expect this starting five to win anything? One answer to that question is -- The MAC is no where near the level is was only 3-4 years ago. Our 2011 team has markedly less talent, but the rest of the MAC has followed suit.

Stats schmats. The Zips are playing better with McNees as the starting PG. Abreu is playing better since he's been coming off the bench. No links necessary. Look at the wins.

Zach, Zach, Zach--7,485 posts and still not a good one. McNees--> <--ZN.O The guy only gives everything he's got for the past 4 years and some folks can't help but pile on every chance they get. When McNees is carrying this team in the Q again this year, I'll simply laugh to myself as those same posters talk about how important McNees was and that they always knew he'd come around. His return to starting PG coincides with with our recent turnaround. That, Nik putting up consistent #'s on a nightly basis, and our return to get-in-their-grill perimeter defense.

MAC Tourney If Today (Post-02/05/11 games)
Captain Kangaroo replied to plowerman78's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Yes. A win on Tuesday gets us a bye. Not quite. Even though a win over BGSU would get us ahead of them, there are atill three teams in the East who are ahead of us and one bye is reserved for the MAC West Champ. If we win and the MAC tournament started now we'd be a five seed. Still a heck of a lot better than things were looking a couple weeks ago. Still want to know how we lost to Eastern AND NIU. Zach is incorrect? Say it ain't so? -
I agree. Being on the Akron staff last season and at Syracuse for a few seasons prior to that doesn't seem like any kind of positive resume. What a staggering amount of losses Coach Jackson has endured over the past several seasons. He's lost more games than anyone on the K.e.n.t. staff over the same period. That's incredible. Good luck Rice...you'll need it.

Our offense isn't good enough to win much...we really have no scorers. Our best offensive players range from mediocre, to streaky. We need a supreme defensive effort in order to beat any decent opponent. Defense needs to be there night-in-night-out.

Are we getting rid of paid Defensive Coaches and hiring 38 year old "Grad Assistants" to help balance our Athletic Department budget? Crafty move.

Big win by the Zips. Nik looks like he's assuming a leadership role. I hope I'm right. And the crowd chants: "More Diggs. More Diggs. More Diggs."

Defensive Coordinator Opening
Captain Kangaroo replied to Casualroofan11's topic in Akron Zips Football
It's either Okruch, or Dr. Z. There's no need to interview anyone else. -
Man...I had my "Steel Valley Luvs Da Bus" signs all set and everything. There goes my 25 cent SV-Fund deposit on Steel Valley's Tailgate Lot # 0.023. What a waste. Damn...
-
Are you asking about the All Star defensive tackle? http://www.semiprofootball.info/minor/allstars/ohiov10.htm Looks like a good league. I see Steel Valley signed Jerome Bettis? Good pick up...he has some miles left on him.

MAC Tourney If Today (Post-02/05/11 games)

My expectations are to be playing on Thursday. Anything beyond that is gravy for the 2010-11 Zips squad. -
Should be a good resource through Bracker Buster Day...

Super Bowl Commercial
Captain Kangaroo replied to acstorfer's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
Whenever I see those commercials I marvel at how we have the most phenomenally bright minds in the world walking all about UA, with scores of Doctoral degrees in fields of cutting-edge Science that are constantly re-shaping the world... yet no one on campus can figure our how to win more than one football game in a season, or market dollar hot dogs. -
Who knows, maybe an "unfortunate" name serves to toughen a player up? Perhaps Dick Butkus (one example) might not have been the quite the same LB without the teasing that no doubt came along the way. This guy probably never got teased at all. But the writer did: He had went to college at Arizona State University. At ASU, Fair lettered in track and football. Corrected sentence: He had went to college at Arizona State University where he done lettered in track and football. 2:23am and Zipmeister's still going strong.

Watcher's View:: Once Upon a Time in the West
Captain Kangaroo replied to Zip Watcher's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Always an enjoyable read, ZW. Regarding the passage below, the games were against CMU, EMU and Toledo..three of the most atrocious D-1 hoops programs in the nation. So I'll need to buy into your "wait and see" approach to our new-found defensive success. Cventinovic has elevated his game a bit recently. Zeke is slowly making more of an impact. But we aren't going to have any real success until we toughen up and start banging inside. Our key remains Brett McKnight. And I don't see him buying into defense at this point in his career. We don't defend, we lose...at least to the teams above the bottom 30. -
You Guys Might Get a Cuse Recruit
Captain Kangaroo replied to TexanMark's topic in Akron Zips Football
If you go JUCO because of grades...and then don't make grades at the JUCO...that's not a good sign. If he wanted to walk on for a year, and prove he can pass some classes, I could see scholarshipping him in 2012. But I wouldn't roll out the red carpet too soon. -
When you play a team as God-awful as EMU, it shouldn't be a matter of a few baskets. That game should be a 20-point blowout win 9 out of 10 times. If we could kick an extra point, we'd have beaten Gardner Webb.
-
Not to belabor the McKnight point...but he averaged 2.5 FT's per game last year, and shot 77%. This season he's averaging 2 FT's per game, and making 67%. When he was at his most effective last season, he was going 2-9 from the field, but making 5-6 FT's in a given game (remember he began the 2009-10 season horribly at the line, then shot around 90% the last 1/2 of the season). He needs to get back to banging inside and finishing around the rim if he's to be useful to the Zips. If he keeps playing soft he doesn't get to the FT line, and he becomes a shot-a-minute offensive liability.
