It would be an amazing effort to beat a Big East team when we are playing Miami(FL) out of the ACC. You ruined it...now Zipmeister won't have anything to post today!
-
Can the Zips muster the effort and focus necessary to beat a Big East team? Can they avoid the dreaded 8-minute scoring drought? Those are the two Keys to the Game: 1.) Have a swagger to compete, and don't play timid 2.) Avoid "Dry Pouch" Stealing a line from GoZips.com: "Only 3 hours and 45minutes until kick-off!!"
-
Always good to see the Zips win in the manner they should win.

Doesn't this thread belong in the Soccer Forum?

Siena beats Georgia Tech. Even though Siena has had their share of recent left-nutters, I still givin' 'em one here.

You can also see that CSU backed off their Miami-esque Murder's Row schedule policy and reeled off 12-straight to begin this year. Our schedule had been too soft in the past. It is ok now. If we really feel Zeke and Gilliam and Harney and Walsh and Treadwell + all these other guys are going to be something special, I hope we kick our scheduling up a notch next season too.

Who will Thunder Dan be rooting for in this match up? And who knew he was @ Alabama? *Roll Tide* (that ESPN commercial cracks me up for some reason)

Presbyterian knocks off Wake Forest. Look for ESPN to steal my line and start calling these upsets "Left Nut Wins" very soon. Note - I would NOT give my left nut to beat Penn State in basketball, like Maine did tonight.

The incredible shrinking roster
Captain Kangaroo replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
Just out of curiosity...has a player ever backed out of a verbal? Said he was going to play for one school, then dumped them on signing day for another school? Bet is never has happened. If this kid is any good, and has no troubles with grades or the police, Ianello did him a big favor by pulling the plug in mid-December. He has PLENTY of time to latch-on elsewhere. -

It is bad to pull a scholly after a verbal is issued. That can hurt recruiting in the future. It could be that the kid did something that merited pulling the scholarship? Since it happened at the end of the semester, poor grades are a strong possibility. Over the past few years I know of several recruits (various sports) that were dropped because their fall HS grades dipped below UA's requirements. For an Eric Howard, you might make an exception. For a 5' 10" LB, you wish him well and move on. -
I agree. You just described almost every MAC school. Unfortunately, we are in somewhat of the same position Can't is in. The trouble with Akron is gaining that one winning season as well, and not a 6-6 record. Akron is in a good postion to turn things around if they could just turn a bunch of guys who don't believe they can win into a group of guys who believe they can win. There's a lot more to that, but in general, there is more up-side at Akron than any other floundering MAC school. I wonder if JD wishes he had left after his 2nd year. Probably not. He got paid $250k to sit on his couch and be "Mr. Mom" for 12 months last year. Now he's got a $300k+/yr job back in his home state coaching college football.

1-12 If that's "good," what's "great?" 4-16? No use arguing with some of these guys Cap'n. The way they see it Steve is the "Shooting" Guard and therefore he should lead the team in shots. You simply can't let facts about how many of his shots come from behind the arch or how he is an extremely streaky shooter get in the way of blindly breaking down shot attempts based on what position a player plays. Can we now say 1-11 was a "good" football season?

I agree. It is easy to hit those shots in practice...but not in the flow of a game. He's always been a streaky shooter. We just need to ride this streak out until he turns it around. Can I predict he'll make at least 5 threes when we play Miami Fl? Who's giving me odds?

It was just a matter of time
Captain Kangaroo replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
If this kid plays against UA, and the AK-Rowdies do not jingle their car keys along with me whenever he touches the ball, I will cry. Don't make me cry, Rowdies! I want to hear hundreds of jingling key chains! -
This game played-out as it did because McNees couldn't throw it in the hoop if he he was sitting on Zeke's back, in the paint. It is nice to have Brett back. Decent scorer, senior who's been on all the bus trips to the far-reaches of Michigan and Indiana, etc. No doubt he's a nice, "mid-season acquisition." But unless he drank some of Conyers' Patented Radioactive Senior Elixir, he is what he is.

I thought the UA band was awesome this year. Shame on me for not posting it sooner. The sound of the band on a college Game Day is one of my favorite things.

Hmmm....why would he want to be a head coach in the MAC....boy, that's a tough one.... Maybe he wants to parlay one great season into a Big East gig, like one at Pitt (like Haywood just did)? Maybe he wants to parlay his MAC success into a sweet gig at a school like Miami Florida (like Al Golden just did)? Maybe he aspires to move from a HC job in the MAC to being a head coach in the Big 10 (like Jerry Kill just did)? Maybe he wants a head coaching job in the Big 12, and feels the MAC is a good place to ascend (worked pretty good for Turner Gill)? Where's Central Michigan's Butch Jones right now? Answer - Cincinnati That's FIVE MAC coaches that have landed lucrative BCS jobs in the past two seasons?! Why the hell wouldn't a BCS position coach want to be a head coach in the MAC? By comparison, if you do a bang-up job as Jim Tressels' WR coach for 3 years, what are your chances of landing a BCS HC position? Answer: Z-E-R-O.

Makes sense. He was suspended for the first semester. Semester's over tomorrow, so he's back.

Brett McKnight was supposed to be that guy. I'll contend that he was often more "instant shooting" as opposed to "instant offense." But he was slotted to be our "Microwave" this season, and he's not there. If you look back in the days when we could knock off a Mississippi State, Florida State or Temple, we had Dials, Joyce, Travis and Wood. Those guys didn't back down from anyone. Dials played at Ohio State. Joyce and Travis played in front of 17k crowds with regularity in high school and were used to winning against whatever heralded opponent they played. Wood was a driven baller with strength that few could match up against. Those guys had the skill set, attitude and swagger to win the big OOC games on occasion. Roberts isn't Joyce. McNees isn't Dials. Cventinovic isn't Travis. And Zeke isn't Wood. Comparing both eras, the old guys were simply better. Going back to the Huggins era, we hung with top 10 teams like Michigan and Pitt throughout entire games because we had ballers like Buford, Boyce and McLaughlin who could match up with just about anyone. This Zips team's problem is -- we don't have anyone who's stepped up and merited discussion that their jersey # should hang from the JAR rafters. Good guys...good teams...play together well...graduate...tons of laudable attributes. But we are missing the element that lets us ascend "From Good to Great." The season is still young. Maybe McKnight returns, humbled and motivated. Maybe Egner and Euton bust out? Maybe... a lot of stuff. Road wins against Detroit and UIC shouldn't be taken for granted. This team is good as they stand today. But they need to improve if they want to be playing in late-March. It will be fun to see what KD and Company do to figure it out. And a final note - Loved the games vs. Temple and Minnesota. The team knows where they stand against high-level competition. I do too. Better than beating South Carolina Upstate any day of the week. I predict I lose my left nut. We beat Miami in Vegas.

I thought this thread was going to be about Drexel stomping #21 Louisville, in Louisville? C'mon Zips...beat Minnesota! Justify a high ranking in a mid-major poll! ESPN highlights aren't just for Zips soccer! Join the fun!
-
I'd give my left nut to beat any Big East basketball program, under any circumstances. Also noticed that Hunter Yurachek's new school beat LSU last night? Nice win for the Chanticliers.

motto, the is in effect here. So i'll let LeQuitter slide one time for his props to the U. Even if he's an idiot for calling it "Akron U". LeBron learned from his high school coach. KD refers to the University as "Akron U" all the time. Many University officials do it. I know I saw a video at the JAR recently where a player (Kara Murphy?) referred to "Akron U." We should begin a thread where we post every time a player or administrator uses the "Akron U" reference, in an interview, newspaper column, etc, and see how long the thread becomes.

I think a bigger "Holy Crap" was K.e.n.t. beating a Big East team, while we played a game againt Temple where the final score was, at first glance on the ESPN ticker, assumed to have been a women's game. Thankfully the soccer team took the attention away from hoops on Sunday.

Him score heap many touchdowns, Kemosabe!
