Kent blows. Looking forward to getting the Wagon Wheel back next year!

Tyler originally with the Longhorns.

Good for Zach. He took an absolute beating during his 3 freshman years as a Zip. All for 3 lousy wins. Same for Matheson. I loved him, but he paid his dues and deserves to go wherever he wants. 100% confident Joe will quickly find replacements as good as, or better than those two guys. And put them is a much better position to win than Zach and Michael ever had. Unless Joe brings in an eye-popping QB transfer, I'm still high on Irons. Joe will fix his ball security issues and give him a much better line to throw behind.

I'm looking forward to the day a decent journalist does an in-depth story on the kids who enter the portal with delusions of grandeur, and then afterwards lament they didn't know how good they had it at their original school. I have to believe the horror stories outweigh the successes pretty heavily.

I think I nailed it?

I'm not totally sold on it. The Portal isn't going anywhere, and student athletes now have the same ability to come-and-go as coaches...but I don't think it is good for college football. I would be pulling my hair out as a coach after spending a ton of time wooing a kid, only to have him bolt the program for any of the myriad of reason kids transfer now-a-days. I hate that Senior Day now consists of clapping for a bunch of mercenary grad students that you watched for a year or two. I like that the portal allows a downtrodden program like the Zips to get mature bodies and turn things around quickly. But I don't like that future "stars" bolt early (Mumpfield could have broken Matt Cherry and Jabari's records, and now he's gone). It's a shame a Freshman that doesn't get immediate PT bolts a team like the Zips, where he'd have been a starter as a Junior/Senior, and ends up at Slippery Rock. Hopefully Moorhead and his staff can create a culture where the bulk of kids the kids buy-in to each other, and being a Zip, and don't feel like starting over elsewhere. I think the surprisingly low number of incumbent Zips in the portal today (I expected 20+ by now) speaks to them enjoying the UA experience, and seeing some hope that the new regime will give them a chance to start winning at the place where they've invested so much to-date.

Jason Taylor - First Ballot Hall of Famer
Captain Kangaroo replied to MDZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
If a 4th string QB from Ohio State were being honored at Infocision, Zips "fans" would have paid attention. 𤢠Real Zips fans love Jason Taylor. Yeah, they wish he were more visible in his support of his alma mater, but no real Zips supporter dislikes him. 99% are proud of him. There's just so few of us it looks worse than it is. Additionally - while Taylor was strutting his stuff at the Rubber Bowl, there were probably between 500 - 2000 fans at most home games. And the teams of that era were pretty bad. Few Akronites ever saw him play. -
I'd say both are earning time through production. Especially Tribble. He's always played tough defense. But recently he seems to have traded his 3-point shots for aggressive drives to the hole. He's finishing at a higher percentage, drawing fouls, and hitting his FT's. He played great against Southern. What's not to like? There were probably 28-32 game-minutes freed up by KJ's departure, and it seems like Dawson and Tribble have seized them. It's a small post-Florida sample size, but I like the trend.
-
A Zips game broadcast mentioned the Infocision turf would be replaced in the offseason. It is 12 years old, and typically shouldn't go more than 8 years between replacements.
-
If Joe can address Ironsā ball security issues, and the Zips OL issues, we would be in good shape with Irons at QB next year. Definitely trust that Joe will bring in a quality veteran qb to compete for the job too.

Can we create a script Fear the Roo logo for helmets? So cool. Please don't show this to Gary Miller, or we might actually get it. š

For those hoping Old Man Winters would get another crack at the Zips HC position...his 2021 Wayne State Warriors matched Arth's 2-win total. -

Mike Dawson is doing well @ Nebraska. -
Groce said the game was on Sunday due to graduation on Saturday. My comment regarding attendance could apply to any game. I really wonder how much Covid and the mask mandate will cut into this seasonās attendance. There are a lot of familiar faces missing from the JAR so far. Itās always sparse in the non-conference season, but seems much more so this year. Giving the students the lower reserve seats helps fill what would otherwise be a pretty barren section. Hope attendance improves. This team will only get better as the year goes on.
-
Predicted actual attendance- 586.
-
PUH-thetic attendance tonight. Dawson and Tribble seem to be taking advantage of KJās abandoned minutes. Both are playing well. Spirited effort by Southern. Punched us in the nose early.

The āZā is cool and has style. Script Akron is lame, unimaginativeā¦it has all the sex appeal of The Turnover Pencil.

He needs to stick to Presidential stuff and stay out of marketing.

New Head Coach Search - 2021 Edition
Captain Kangaroo replied to GoZips86's topic in Akron Zips Football
I respectfully disagree with the esteemed Farmer Jones. If Joe focuses on QB and skill position transfers before bolstering the OL, DL and LBās, weāre in trouble. Re-recruit Gibson. Make sure Mumpheld and Mathison are in the fold. Personally Iād be happy if Norrils stuck around. Thatās where Iād focus my early skill position ārecruiting.ā -
