I don't think Chiu is being looked at as a contributor this year. Not sure if he has played -- but I'd look at a red-shirt year as best for Andy. Schmitt can do the job when called on.The game: The team picked up where they left off in Northridge -- I was hoping there would be a chance at a similar tumultuous finish, but it was not to be. It seemed as if the red card deflated the players emotionally. Another thing that we are seeing, despite the amazing level of skill on Akron's side, size does matter, and opponents are using their larger, and taller bodies to stay in games with us this year. How about that guy Sandoval? He looked like he towered over Akron in the box, and he kept the play alive that allowed the Lobos to put in the equalizer. Is he the Brian Urlacher of college soccer?Couple of side things I saw last night: Quinn (I wish I could spell his first name!) has a great future in front of him. He continues to see the game better than anyone on the field. He just has great soccer instincts. It would be something to witness if we could combine those instincts with DeAndre's pace down the sideline. DeA runs like a deer, but when he gets the ball in the forward third he sometimes looks like he's caught in the headlights! He still needs to "get" the feel of the college game, but when he does he's going to be special. He just holds onto the ball longer than he should -- when he starts finding open runners he's going to start creating scoring chances. How did Cal Poly look vs Syracuse? I was in Pomona couple wks ago -- the school there calls themselves the Big Brothers of the Poly family. Rowdies might want to do something with that. Hey -- another idea: throw tortillas! They do that on the C. Coast

There was only one player involved in any "altercation", and it was the out-of-control Darren Mattocks who needs to have his chill pill allocation upped. He'll do well to sit out the next game and learn from this experience. There was a (minor) collision with the keeper, who reached out to hold Darren up. Keith Tabatznik on the broadcast got it exactly right -- Mattocks took two separate swings at opponents. Frankly, he's fortunate if he only sits one game. Very immature. Is there any post-game review by the MAC or anyone?

Please help me out. I'm looking for an exceptional selection of Rhone varietals. I was a bit disappointed by the World of Wines store in Northridge. Although I was shocked that they sold Spire cider @ $4.40 for 4 when I've been paying over $2 for a single bottle in Hawaii!

An FYI: According to the mac-sports.com website, the Cal Poly game will be streamed online even though it's not a MAC game. Can't leak much info, but Akron will be using another new back 4 tonight. Can maybe piece it together based on who wasn't playing last game and who played well when given an opportunity...Look for this to be as serious a threat of a game to end the Akron win streak, it won't be easy at all.Dagilis over Gallego? Not too sure what I think of that. Haven't been to impressed with Dagilis in the past, but he was solid last match. It's surprised me -- though the competition has been fierce -- that Matt hasn't gotten any more of a chance until now. He's as athletic as anybody on the bench. Didn't he win states in 100 meters?

Well, if you're going to pull the Switch-o, Change-o on me, then...Never mind... Anywho -- how does FSC manage to massage their American broadcast ops with the "International Headquarters" in beautiful downtown Winnipeg? :rolleyes:edit/added: For anyone who was wondering what I meant: Here's a story on Fox Soccer Channel's Winnipeg HQ I'm a big Machado fan, but can you stand Jeremy StLouis, and that awful woman in the hamburglar glasses? -

The Rowdies just posted a pump up video for the game tomorrow night. At the very end is Caldwell's goal and Zarek rushing the field. Too funny! Thanks. Outstanding show of support by Zarek! Okay, so from the angle, I can tell PLowerman was the guy up on the tower. He's the "official videographer" for Akron soccer? I witnessed in the replay something that I noticed, but forgot about in real time -- one of the craziest fan reactions comes from the CSUN student in red. Watch him jumping up and waving at Caldwell as he goes by. He was happy to watch a great ending, even if his team lost! And the CSUN coach was outside the locker room shaking peoples' hands after the game. -
That's because it never was about those things...unless we go back to the 1800s and why would we want it to be the 1800s again?GP1, do you mind explaining to the unwashed masses (or just one ol fuddy duddy under a palm tree), if what you say is true -- what exactly is the value of (college) athletics, if competition and sportsmanship are no longer involved?Mahalo...

Great idea -- as soon as we head back to NCAA DII. Which may not be that far away, given current trends. -

Sounds like the "host" is trying to make amends for referring to the AK-Rowdies by some other name a year ago -- what was it? He's a good guy, though, so humor him! I remember the soccer games were played between the HS band show and the football pre-game during Acme-Zip Saturdays -- however I never witnessed one as they always came about 3-4 hrs before the football game. Not sure how many folks were present -- but probably more than the 500 or so who watched at Lee Jackson in the day. I hope I can get off work at 1 o'clock to watch Friday. Go Zips! -

If you need a video tutorial, that doesn't seem like a good thing. Is there a Spanish language app for the visitors? And one for Gozips? -
There IS something in there in the year 2015HOLY CRAP!!! We better get a football team and coach by then.

Weekly College Soccer Polls

Irvine #5 and UCLA 27! Pheewwww! UCLA fired their women's coach a year ago, and she had been fairly successful (but couldn't beat USC!)-- you gotta feel the heat under Salcedo's seat. I saw Irvine play Gonzaga (at least the start of their game), and they didn't look any better than Fullerton or Northridge to me. their BIG WIN is what -- Wisconsin or Illinois-Chicago? (Sorry -- it's one of those U of California sites that are basically illegible!) I think they were barely ranked third in the Big West pre-season poll, and way behind Cal Poly. -
Wow! I've been away form the area for quite a while, but some of the changes continue to mystify me! Why, oh why, at a time of diminshed resources would the state start up a SECOND community college in Stark County? What exactly is the reasoning behind having both K.SU-Stark AND Stark State (and what an awful name BTW, seems to signify how "stark" the educational landscape is becoming)??

Disagree wholeheartedly. There are not enough seats in nursing programs to fill the need already (good for me, bad for NEO) It's highly competitive to get into BSN programs, and AD programs who take anybody have 18-24 month waiting lists after you finish your prereq's. There aren't enough graduates to cover the retirees, let alone all of the expansion. The last thing we need is to combine those programs and further limit those graduates. There are few growth industries in NEO, and Nursing is one of them. I'm already being recruited and I have two semesters left. What would make more sense is dropping state funding of BS programs that have no need in society. Interesting idea. When you see CSU cancelling their baseball program, Can't State not sponsoring soccer, none sponsoring hockey, imagine what a combined budget could build...That's a fascinating contribution from Spin! When I was a student, the school offered to essentially pay the full-load of any MALE who was willing to study nursing for four years. Not sure how that worked out 30 yrs ago, but I still hate the sight of blood! Finally, I have to comment on the political science of my friend Gozips comment: A state administrator -- from one of the most conservative administrations in the state's history has a vision which only includes cutting, privatizing and consolidating university programs, while doing nothing to stop tuition and fee increases. To use the 'S'-word to describe that should make a huge contribution to understanding how Cold War ideology has set the nation back more than half a century. Far from some sort of 21st Century Eugene Debs (1914 Presidential candidate who won over 10%), Mr Fingerhut (I assume he must be the kingpin of the private security guard biz?) sounds like the sort of opportunistic capitalist whose "free-market" vision is to drown public education in the bathtub of self-service/special interest politics. Stepping off the soapbox, I return you now to your regularly scheduled ZN.O programming.

Gotta have those pix, Z.I.P.!!!!!!!!!Hey, if you go to my gallery, you can see three shots I took last weekend in Northridge, including one of Zemanski and Valentin. I tried to insert it here, but the gallery doesn't have a 'copy' link. I have some more but having problems downloading. For some reason some pix on my camera won't download to my pictures file. Anybody have that problem before? -

Wish I could say you should buy a 12 pack....but I think you will at least need a 6 pack.Cooler is already packed with the Sam Adams Fall Sampler, plus an emergency 12 of High Life. I'll be sure to post as I open each variety. I hate to divert attention from the high point of tomorrow's event, but about how many people are expected to show up for the football game (that minor diversion after the bottles are all dried)? Is there a shot at 20k? 15K? Okay, will the students fill the grass?

So he should have tweeted formally, "..."The University of Akron has a great one"? Idon'thinkso

This looks like a pretty challenging schedule to me. Outside of the major programs, there is YSU so the fans will have fun. CSU is a good program and it should be a fun game to attend. Detroit has history as a good program. We have MTSU for a trip down memory lane in Tennessee. We all know what VCU can do. WVU is a good program....too bad it is on a weeknight so not many will get to see the Zips play in a really good college arena. Three road games in a row to start January will provide a good challenge as well."Challenging" is the word I would use to describe this schedule. Some say it isn't any good because of Hiram and JC...everyone plays those types of cupcakes and two games don't make an entire schedule weak.I wasn't speaking so much to the overall schedule (which looks fine and actually stronger than you've had in a while), as much as I was referring to scheduling non D1's in the regular season. That is not something everyone does. D1 transitional teams do that and weaker D1 squads, of which the Zips are neither. I'm sure Dambrot could have gotten a sub 300+ RPI squad that the Zips could beat on just as easily. It's one thing to want national recognition and respect for your achievements, but IMO you set yourself up to be disrespected when you play squads like that. Your home slate stinks...but there are some very good road games on the slate and an opportunity to build a decent resume should you win them.Marian?? http://www.butlersports.com/sports/m-baskbl/2010-11/scheduleI would prefer we play cupcakes like Gonzaga does to get into rythem http://www.gozags.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPS...p;Q_SEASON=2010 Most good teams play cupcakes to get the rhythm going, lose the jitters of first game and to correct flaws without jeopardizing the season. I think KD likes to schedule local teams because it is good for their program and good for us. He is from the area and is big on loyalty....I can't find fault with his approach. So...we schedule a lower level local team every year. It does not affect our RPI so who cares.Who's better -- Lewis and Clark, or Hiram?

Just read the news. Very sad, as Shaun was not just a All-American player at Akron, but one of the most successful coaches after leaving. Here's the story from Gozips.com. Team will wear black armbands as memorial vs New Mexico. Sending our sympathy to the family, and soccer family of Shaun Pendleton. His legacy was great.
