I don't think anybody has ever argued for Akron to make a unilateral move to exit the MAC. The only move that makes sense is the American Athletic Conference. There's no excitement for students/alumni/fans/general community with the MAC, so I don't see how it's "the best fit". The MAC doesn't say, "Come on out this Saturday, spend your day tailgating and watching Akron football." It says, "Stay at home this week and watch the game on Tuesday night from the comfort of your couch." Soccer just got into the Big East - there is legitimate excitement from this move. Nobody is mourning the loss of MAC soccer. The same would hold true with football, basketball, etc.
I can't speak for the other conferences. The only one that made sense was the Sun Belt, and geographically, WKU is a better fit for the MAC than the Sun Belt. MTSU is borderline for both, leaning towards the Sun Belt. What I can speak for is where WKU & MTSU would've slotted into the MAC from a competitive standpoint. WKU would've been a great add, as the Hilltoppers also have a solid fan base. Both schools would've improved the competitive balance of the league.
