Dorsey hasn't been signed yet. So, they can't cut frye. Dorsey may be asking for more loot than he got last time around. LOL.What I am about to say hurts me. I don't think I ever could have imagined myself saying it. I was 9 years old and sunday afternoons were my favorite time of the week because of the browns, but....the Cleveland Browns are gheywhat a f'n loser organization.

This actually makes me feel good. I was really worried that he would have to sit on the bench on this shitty team for several years. He'll get picked up

That is A-Freakin-Mazing.I think we need to eminent domain BW3's ass and errect public restrooms in their place. Screw them.Oh yeah, prediction....BTW, my description of how the game would go last week VS tehOSU was pretty close, but my numbers were quite off.I'm still going to predict high this week.Akron 31Indy 24They will come out for 2 quick touchdowns in the first quarter, but our defense will adjust and hold them to just 2 more scores for the rest of the game. Our offense will studder at first, but once we are down a bit, we will start passing down field a bit more and their defenders will lay back 'prevent' style, and we will actually have some scoring drives (OMGWTFBBQ)

Should JD more back to running the offense?
zen replied to blueandgold's topic in Akron Zips Football
Theoretically speaking, I like the concept of JD "head coaching" and managing the team, while letting specialists take responsibility for the details in coaching the specific aspects of the game. But "coaching" offense can have a lot of aspects in itself. There is a LOT of things going on that I am completely clueless about, from how they are coaching fundamentals all the way up to specific gameplan preparation for the next opponent. But there is ONE thing that is visible to me when I watch the game, as a fan, and that is the actual selection of plays that are run. Now, granted, I am seeing the play-calling live, and I see how it works real time, rather than sitting in a strategy session trying to predict how the defense will respond, so I really should just put my trust and faith in the fact that there are people a hell of a lot smarter and better informed than me making these decisions..... unfortunately, it's really hard to take that perspective when I am watching the game. When you have a very conservative philosophy on offense, it is because you know that the more risks you take, the more likely you are to turn the ball over, which is obviously much more costly than not getting a first down, particularly when you can put faith in your special teams and defense. But to me, every time you move the chains, it's like scoring. No points go on the board, but you have won yourself a new set of downs, along with the obvious fact that you have indeed moved closer to the endzone. The goal of the offense is NOT to win the game... that is a TEAM effort. The goal of the offense is NOT to score. That is the cumulative effect of the entire offensive unit, everyone performing and executing over many plays. The goal of the offense IS to get a first down. When you continue to do that without turning the ball over, everything else takes care of itself. The scores, the wins, the individual stats, and the team stats....they all fall into place. Just get the first down! This may sound very elementary, but it seems to get forgotten all the time on the field. It's more than just averaging 3.333 yards per play. It's about constantly exploiting the defense. Not exploiting their "weaknesses" per se, but by designing and running plays that cannot be defended because of the basic fact that all defenses DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO NEXT, and because of that, they cannot predict where their 'assignment' is going, where the ball is going, and most importantly, they cannot decide, from among their multiple responsibilities on the field, WHERE TO GO.So many play callers simply pre-plan a series of plays that they hope will put the defense on it's heals. Invariably, it makes a lot of assumptions. First, it assumes that most of the plays will be successful. When they are, according to theory, the defender becomes more apprehensive about getting beat again, and relaxes on his other reponsibilities, which you exploit. The obvious problem with this is the fact that you have created a chain of events which must fall into place much like dominos. Now, I am aware that most offensive play callers are not simpletons, and they are doing much more than mixing up the types of plays as well as the locations (stretching the field). They work on general trends as well, much like how a pitcher will pound the inside and go for the final blow getting the batter to chase a pitch high and outside. But keep that pitching metaphor in your mind, because what is missing here in so many play calling strategies in football these days is on-the-field intuition and real time responsiveness. I am convinced that if you took an old-school quarterback from 40 years ago who called his own plays in the huddle, and he would rip apart modern defenses with their soft zone and spread coverage schemes. He saw how linebackers were playing off tightends if they slipped out behind the wide receivers who took the defensive backs with them into coverage. He saw who was blowing the biggest holes open on the line, or who was having trouble on pass protection. The difference is, the pitcher and the catcher are calling pitches right there on the field, real time, based on what's happening at the time. It's a fluid and somewhat intuitive process. And while they know that a certain guy likes to chase outside fastballs if you work him inside first, they didn't enter the situation with 8 pitches preplanned on paper.I really think that sometimes these guys lay in bed at night dreaming series of plays that all geniusly unfold as a strategic chain of events like Bobby Fischer dreams up entire chess matches. I don't think there is anything wrong with strategy, as long as you don't get lost in it and tied up by it. This is what I think happens when I see screen plays continuously called even though they continue to fail. Someone must be sitting there thinking "We have to get one of these to work or we can't pass over the middle" or something overly convoluted like that. The goal is to get chunks of yardage. When you spend too much time making virtual sacrifices "setting things up", you have taken your eyes off the prize.Thats my rant. I hope I fooled you for a few moments into thinking I actually know what I am talking about. LOL -
I saw that last night. Wow!I hope he is handling this okay. It's probably a lot to deal with.
-
I could care less if I'm a "villian"...Like many others (BuckZip, skhor, RowdyZip, etc), I don't bullshit, and some people can't handle that. A lot of people here don't want to hear what you say unless you believe the Zips will go undefeated and every Zip in the pros is a future HOF'er. But it's good...I think sometimes this forum needs the people who can remove the Zips blinders and bring a realistic perspective to the topics. I knew you were going to say that. My point was, you ENJOY it too much. It's not very admirable. It's really rather quite ugly.

Last year, I buy that argument. Not this year. How many times did Charlie have plenty of time to throw today? Quite a bit actually...How many times did Charlie step into the pocket and make a strong throw, or use his scrambling ability to get away and get rid of the ball when he was pressured? I can count on one hand...It was the o-line...then it was the receivers...then the staff...then the front office...at what point do we just admit that it may be Charlie - and not the guys around him - that is the problem? WHERE YOU WATCHING THE SAME GAME?I doubt you could count the number of times charlie got a chance to throw on more than two hands. And I thought THIS LEVEL blinding bias was relegated to politics. My god. Could you possibly desire for someone to look bad anymore than this? Please don't portray your ill will as reasoned thinking. The fact is the offense did not move the chains with Frye taking the snaps. That's the inevitable truth that cannot be denied. Let's leave it at that. I will not sit here and list all the bullshit sacks, pressures, and DROPPED PASSES that happened in 3 very quick series. It's pointless. I used to say that Charlie "made things happen" but he didn't do it in his few opportunities today. But I really don't need to hear you come one here and HEAP ON. I am going to restrain myself from calling you names, but seriously, you are not taking a very endearing role here. Villain much? Or just a pot stirrer?
-
I agree. He needed to take the last opportunities he got and he needed to make something happen, despite extremely poor protection. The dropped passes he couldn't do anything about either. The interception was indeed bad. It was his fault. I think it's over.
-
This is all about Brady Quinn. Frye got sacked, pressured, and had atleast 3 drops that I can remember. They took him out before he ever had a chance to look good, and that is by design. Coaches and Staff know that the fans have some residual hope/loyalty for frye, but have no love for Anderson, really. Taking frye out after those short series was great timing. I revise my prediction of Quinn being in by the 5th game. I know expect to see him next week or the following week at the latest... not starting the games at first, but soon. Very soon.

I was at a Damons and most of their servers/bartenders wore OSU garb. I can't blame them, really. OSU fans bring in a lot of business. Bartender told me they got a LOT of calls the day before asking if they would have the game on. The only place what I would have a real problem with is the Winking Lizard in fairlawn, because thats where they have teh zips pregame.
-
Both guys played fine. I still say, the problem is the one dimensional play callling.
-
the offensive play calling by the zips this week was just like last week's but even more offensive. There were EVEN MORE screens!!!! I don't recall a single one of them that worked, except for one where arthur put a move on a guy at the line of scrimage. All the rest of them were for almost nothing, just LIKE LASTWEEK.Hello? Learning curve please? How about this word: "adjustments"Let me put it this way. Even if they were only to "open up other plays", I would suggest that it was a failure in that regard too, but in order to scare a defense into playing a certain play or a certain spot on the field, you NEED TO SUCCEED at it. So, I'll say it again this week. We need to stretch their defense vertically, not just horizontally. That's all. I have no other complaints. Performance wasn't bad. Few errors. Defense and Special teams looked great.

*(^@$*&^@#*&$@ they scored

SCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE
-
WOW! No kidding. That's a great idea. I think we should have a heisman statue at the new stadium. It would be a very impressive name to associate with the stadium and our program
-
:o wow, it looks like there is no affiliation at all, and since they called them 'kangaroo soccer camps', they decided to 'borrow' akron's fear the roo graphics
-
great point!I think this illustrates the difference certain types of fans, and why some of us bitch about the local rag not covering the zips very well. Some teams build up a............ I can't find a single word for it, but........ air of importance, or a sense of history or destiny. Hell, even when the browns are doing poorly, people still want to be associated with them, and participate with them. It's why people sold out all of those regular season games at jacobs field, even at the start of the season when no one knew for sure how they would perform that year. It's because, people wanted to participate in a product that they thought everyone wanted to participate in. Despite if they won or lost that day, they could still say "I was there"Are they true sports fans? No. Not in the purest sense. Most of them are not. Pure sports fans are truely rare, and even many of them who like the game for the game would rather just grab a bag of chips and watch a game of television rather than drag their ass out to the park/arena/stadium.But, those people, the bandwagon types, they are the majority of ticket buyers. They want to go to see a winner. They wont have a good time if they don't. They want to be associated with a winner. They want to tell their friends "I was at the game" when someone mentions their winning ways.but deeper than the momentary band wagon is that 'sense of importance/history' bandwagon I was talking about. Those people are not necessarily true sports fans either. They go to the browns games when the browns aren't winning.Nobody around here (except some of us, lol) have any sense of investment in the zips. They would only go to see a winner. They would not go to 'support' them. Now, if the zips beat the buckeyes this weekend, something tells me it would be a lot harder to get tickets for the akron/Can't game
-
seriously, its because everyone thinks "we can't win! why would I wanna go?"go around campus and stop some people and ask them
-
duh! I think I knew that but forgot. Its even more of a slap in the face that their BBall program wouldn't join the MAC. What? They are too good for us? But here, have our shitty ass Fball team. Who the hell accepted that shit?
-
BBall, I supose. *shrug*Geographically, it doesn't make any sense. The other side of them thar mountnz is east coast, and that's a LONG bus ride.
-
Akron: 20OSU: 31I predict they (OSU) will have difficulty scoring much in the first half but will get more big plays in the 2nd half. We will have even more difficulty putting together sustained drives (all game). Three of our scores will come on special teams and turnovers.Prove me wrong Zips! Show me you can drive the ball on those guys!

I haven't' been rude to any visitors as well, unless I need 'sensitivity training' to realize how my innocent comments can hurt people. LOLNO, when one or two people are rude, it's more fun to blame the whole community. That stirs things up more.

That's a rough one. If (more appropriately, when) Quinn starts over Frye, unless he flops or suffers a major injury, Charlie will be relegated to backup until his time is through with Cleveland. You just don't draft a QB in the first round and never give him a shot. The catch is, when (more appropriately, if) it appears Frye will only be a backup because Quinn pertinently assumes the role as starter, will Charlie's experience and resume be more lucrative to Cleveland as trade bait than as a backup. That's the question.
