Manny's Owner (Bro of Sun Owner) Doesn't Wanna Go
zen replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
In order to build the stadium, the university announced it is buying up all the bordering property, but not all the owners want to sell.Wait, bordering property? This is a bit confusing. I think they University should get eminent domain to everything inside the block of vine, spicer, and exchange. Everyone accross the streets should have the right to stay. Also, I think that both sides should be forced to negotiate in good faith. For example, I don't think property owners should ask for 5million when the market value is only 250,000, but likewise, I think they university should have to pay a significant percentage OVER market value to compensate for the trouble of displacement, AND/OR help the owner aquire property of equivalent conditions. -
That was the most embarassing cluster fuck I ever witnessed on live TV.If I was Dan Gilbert (and Usher, and Lebron James), I would fire everyone involved at the end of the seaon... the operators, the technical people, everyone. Those fat asses sit around and do jack schit and get front row seats to NBA basketball games because they press buttons and they act like they know what they are doing. If you are going to be apart of the production at a professional entertainment or sports event, you had better know exactly what's happening 100% of the time.

in a way, he did akron a service. How many people were watching millionaire and saw that and thought, "oh wow, I feel dumb for not knowing that... I'm going to remember 'Akron'" or........ "I knew that! Akron, yup"Either way, it sticks because of the situation

did we ever find out who got naming rights for our new stadium? My guess was First Energy

I agree, He hasn't done that much really.Without mentioning LO & PW (we been down that road about a jillion times),who do you think would being doing a better job at Akron than JD? Just curious. Before you answer, ask yourself if this person would coach at AKRON under the same conditions. Then tell me how much you are going to pay this coach (is it in Akron's budget). Then tell me if you think the program was better off before JD or after JD (for the love of god don't mention LO)What do you think JD's goals were when he came to Akron in the years that he has been here?Do you think he has met his goals? Fell short? Exceeded? If you are not happy with JD, I would be interestedin reading what exactly you expected from him and where he is falling short. I was thinking the same thing when I was reading some posts in this thread, but I think you put it in perspective very well. I'd like to hear some well-thought out responses to your questions.

Patriot Bowl attendance and attendance in general
zen replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
and your answer is.... Youngstown is much more of an Island than Akron -
The problem is perception... and a billboard wont fix it.The perception for much of the masses is that UA is a commuter / community college.Unless people think of you as a campus-university with a genuine national presence, they are not going to latch on.The best you can do is put a dominant product on the field (or court) and raise the eyebrows of the students and alumni to the point that you are selling tickets to near capacity... but you aren't going to get Joe Blow and Jane Doe to walk past the huge Ohio State store in Summit mall with gleams of scarlet and grey rays beaming out at them to the sound of angels voices and think "Wait, aren't we 6 miles from the U.Akron campus?"I mean, we don't even have a local news cast to cram highlights down their throats and smack them in the face and say, wake up!A billboard is just going to cost you five grand a week and make every working class schlub who drives by it think to themselves "Oh, the local commuter college thinks they have a real football team"I hate to say it, and I know I will be ridiculed for saying it, but people need something serious and significant to wake them out of their fixed perceptions. We need to win the MAC, win a bowl game, and have scenes of students ripping goalposts down on ESPN.Fortunately, the new stadium will be here in a few years, and football is the key in this area. That will be good changing perception, particularly if it corresponds with some serious success on the field. Remember, you are trying to coax a population that is comprised of less than 5% who are genuine sports fans and enjoy a good sporting event for the sake of the sport itself, less than 50% who are bandwaggoners who want to wear your colors if it makes them feel like less of a loser by association, and over 50% who can't even spell Akron, let alone care.

I'm sorry I gave my opinion. I forgot this is a discussion forum. I'll stop giving my opinion.I didn't bring politics into this. A politician did. His name is Fingerhut.I will refrain from any further comentary, since it has been made clear to me that my opinion is obviously unwanted.

so, forcing universities to "collaborate" turns them all into one animal with one head and many bodies, and that one head is still a beaurocracy.Anyway, it sounds like you enjoyed reading what they fed you. Personally, I always read between the lines. Whenever a politician tells you what something is NOT, odds are that's exactly what it's going to be.
-
Competition = goodbeaurocracy = badIf I am a smart kid from Akron, why should I have to go to Can't to be an architect? That's bullshit.Or, if I am a weenie liberal who lives in portage county, why should I go to akron because there is a state required "colaboration"Maybe the universities receive state funding, but they are run like businesses that need to attract clients in a competative market, and that's good for the clients (students, in this case).
-
GHEY!!!!More bullshit government beaurocracy trying to run everything for everybody.Free market forces are what will make these universities grow and provide better resources to students, not Big Brother's every so loving and guiding hand. Universities have to compete like almost no other industry, because students can choose from thousands, or atleast dozens if they want to stay in-state.And if the career and labor markets show a demand for polymer engineers, institutions like the UofA will try to meet the educational demand to attract students from around the world...... but if Eric Finger-my-hut thinks that silicone wafer technology is the wave of the future, he can go ahead and force all of the NEO universities to dedicate whole departements to it, and they can all sink like the titanic when optical processing technology takes over.Beaurocracy! The fastest way to stagnate!

I am really starting to hope that Quinn plays the first game of the year. When he doesn't turn out to be superman, I will laugh at everyone... in their face. And when Quinn goes down in a heap, because the offensive line is still somewhat offensive, and cannot give Quinn protection... I will laugh... not when he is taken off the field, but when Charlie re-assumes his rightful place there. And when Frye starts showing by demonstration of contrast that Quinn was no superman, I will laugh at everyone... in their face.
-
I hope Luke gets a chance to play, and even if not, I hope he gets a fair look and number of snaps in training camp / pre season.I didn't see the Can't gear link, but remember, those sites are contracted to run by some ineternet media company, or whatever, and "they" don't care about rivalries when it come to making money, either by advertising, or by commisions from sales referals

I don't expect the Brown's offensive line to suddenly become a dominant force in the league next year because of one signing and one draft pick, but it would be a nightmare scenario for Crennel if pretty-boy Brady Quinn got his feet wet on the bench for the first half of the season, and Gritty-boy Charlie Frye played the first half of the season very well. How do you bench a QB who is playing very well?To be realistic, in a historical perspective, it wont matter if Frye had the shittiest pass protection evar... all that will matter is that the Browns took Mr.Media-Darling in the first round and the Browns had a 3rd round MAC QB........ erm... what was his name? I forget already.*sigh*
-
I always have been and always will be a Browns fan. I was a browns fan when I was 8 years old.I was a browns fan before I became a UA student and alum.I am a browns fan now matter what their record is.In other words, I am loyal to my alma mater, but I will die a browns fan (if I can stand the NFL any longer, because if I make it to the age of 40, NFL games will probably be 2 hours of ads and 1 hour of condensed football, but that's another rant), and I am not prejudiced towards Charlie Frye more than I am prejudiced toward wanting what's best for the Browns. I watched a lot of Frye's games in Akron, particularly his last year. He was a magic make-it-happen player. It's a quality that's rare in a quarterback. I said before, and I'll say again, I don't mean that he will go down as the next Joe Montana or John Elway, but I really and truely believe that he is starting NFL QB material. He's got the intangables. It is for that reason that I would love knowing he is the Brown's backup QB... even if it breaks my heart that he wont be taking snaps on most sundays in autumn.
-
Personally, if I were the browns, I would take phonecalls from teams wanting to move up to 3, and only take a deal that can offer me 2 lower first round picks, or 1 lower first round pick and 2 decent second round picks, and I would grab some nice O-line studs (and D-line too)
-
If this pick is correct I think I am going to The browns (finally) are using psychology and poker strategy in their draft preparation these days. The only reason that "experts" have the browns picking Brady Quinn is because the browns want people to think they will pick him, but they will not pick him.I don't want to have a debate on this, but I am sure there are people who think I am nuts, but personel people in the NFL know very very well that teams will pick players based on how much other teams want them, not just because they have a need for them. I am reminded of when the Browns gave up a 2nd round draft choice to move up ONE SPOT to get Kellen Winslow in a draft position swap, and it was basically because Detroit KNEW they wanted Winslow and called up the Browns and told them point blank that they will take Windlow, even though detroit really wanted Roy Williams. If the browns had kept their desires closer to the vest that year, they would have got Winslow at #7 and kept their 2nd round pick.

maybe a MAC school did try to recruit a VT commit.Or...... maybe a VT commit got cold feet and started talkign to a MAC school, and this bozo heard about it and decided to flap his gums.Who cares?Screw it. In fact, I hope they lose commits after hearing that comments.Just because a tregedy happened doesn't mean you suddenly get political clout to be a devisive SOB on the radio?I mean, hell, if I was going to try to steal decent Can't commits, I'd mention how they have a Jihadist professor tenured there. If Can't doesn't like it, they should consider not harboring jihadis

If I am not mistaken, the main determination for how much AM signal strength you get is by how close (geographic distance * their signal strength) of a competing station on the same frequency. I'm sure that if they could get their signal boosted, they would. The hardware upgrade is always a relatively negligable investment compared to the increased range.

I personally couldn't care if Ann Coulter was a transvestite, Rush Limbaugh did heroin, or if Rosie Odonnel went to orgies every night of the week. That's because I am a libertarian and I actually believe people can do whatever they want to themselves as long as they don't hurt anyone else.So-called liberals (who are usually lite socialists in sheeps clothing) pretend to be free-minded liberals, but they tend to be the most vindictive judgemental people you ever meet. The reason I can't listen to political talk radio (right or left) is for the same reason I can't listen to sports talk radio for very long, other than the current events news reporting, it's always the same stuff on a different day.
-
wow, how's that for a contemptuous reaction? This was a thread about a radio station, remember?Anyway, I can pull in 1350 all the way up to north summit co, even in the day time.

Depth is a wonderful thing.Running backs get dinged up throughout the course of a season. It's the nature of the beast.
