Ummm.... he's never turned us down? Larry Kehres on the other hand has turned a lot of people down, Can't State multiple times. He's never leaving Mount Union. Plus, the ways a D3 program, with no scholarship component and no spring practice etc., is built, is a completely different story than the other 3 divisions. I'm not sure Kehres would even have the know how on how to get it done at this level, and he probably realizes that. +1. Unlike K e n t, I would never pursue Kehres for the HC position here. However, IMHO, I think he'd make a very good OC.

Marla Ridenour for the ABJ. I always appreciate her work and wish she would cover the Zips more often. From the article: After spending 15 years at Youngstown State, Tressel can also remind UA that there are deserving candidates from the ranks of the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA). One who took his program from worst-to-first is Liberty's Danny Rocco, a former assistant head coach under Al Groh at Virginia. The Flames were 1-10 the year before Rocco arrived at Liberty and have won four Big South Conference titles in six years, averaging better than 35 points per game during those four. Interesting candidate. It's nice to see she's put some thought into this. Liberty is a Christian university and I know some of their coaches, being Christian men & women, consider it a destination job. I don't know if Danny Rocco is one of those guys or not.

Who should the next coach have on their staff?
Blue & Gold replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
WR coach one of the 3 most important hires? That's kind of surprising. What makes you say that? -
Cleveland State sucks. Youngstown State sucks. K e n t State really sucks. Go Akron!
-
True. While some teams are already putting the finishing touches on their recruiting classes for this year, our Master Recruiter only had 4 verbals. Pathetic.

Good job, Vince.

I really don't get it... What is the fascination with this guy. If people want a former Zip so badly why not get Charlie Frye or Jason Taylor haha at least people actually remember them!! I'm not sure if Withers played for Akron.. Sorry with all the obsession around here about Winters, I read your post quickly and didn't realize it actually said Withers My bad! but who is Withers? Everett Withers from UNC?? He's just referencing a running joke from another thread in which a poster misspelled Winters' name as "Withers."

Speaking of George Thomas, I hope you are all aware, that Tom Gaffeny is retiring. Tom has done a nice job covering Zips football & basketball. It has been tough to write about football the last few years. Now, we will be getting George Thomas to cover the Zips. It looks like this might be a step backwards. YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY GOT TO BE KIDDING ME?!?!

+1. I'm with Lee on this one. Paul Winters is the man.
-
Crap, so he tweaked a knee, huh?

And long snapper! And punter. Both graduating. Isn't LS Steiner a junior? Oooh, I hope! Let me check... YES! Adam's a junior! We're set at long snapper next year! And Wags' 1st Team All-MAC honor is long overdue. He should have been 1st Team all 3 years.

Amen and AMEN!

Good idea, g-mann. Wayne State's football roster Though I, of course, want the search committee to find and hire the best coach out there, I'm pulling for Paul Winters too. I think he'd be another KD here. Or CP, even though CP's not a native Akronite, he sure is a loyal guy. Also, it'd be nice to see a coach who really goes hard after the local talent. I'm pretty sure PW would do that. He's a successful head coach who has his team in the quarterfinals. Plus he's a good guy; the kind of coach I would have loved to play for. Not one who screams/berates, but a positive, encouraging motivator. (At least that's how he impressed me.) I like him.

if the US does well in the Olympics, Caleb Porter is going to get us worldwide media attention CP
-
Simply tragic. RIP Chris.
-
Honestly, we should start a new LeBron thread because there's a lot of negativity on this thread toward the guy who has proven above and beyond loyal to Akron & gets our name in the national media more than anything/anyone else ever has. Except maybe Jim Tressel.

Or watch the 6:00 news?

North Hill? You're a dego. Let's get the topic back to good ol' Tree.

Actually, it's in the fieldhouse.

+1. He's a big reason a generation of Akronites don't take the Zips seriously. His melancholy, backhanded-complimentary slant when he'd write about UA was a disgrace. However, having said that, I think Paul Winters would be a very good candidate.

+1.

The next coach to leave Akron by choice, will be the first (in my life). Last time it happened was Gordon Larson, 1972. He stayed on as AD for a few more years. Bob Huggins?

Who will be leaving the Zips
Blue & Gold replied to UAsoccerchamps11's topic in Akron Zips NCAA Championship Soccer
And David Mayer. This team will be just fine. I think Mattocks will leave, but he'll be the only non-senior leaving IMO. I think we may see a fair number of this years' freshman who got zero playing time transfer out. I don't think Mayer will return. Based on past history I could see the transfers. There's no point in staying behind someone who plays the full 90. I'm not really sure the mass exodus of freshman is what will happen though. Is a redshirt freshman more likely to transfer than a guy like Brenes? He doesn't really have a defined role yet will already be a junior. He's clearly a very good player but he's stuck behind two future MLS players in central midfield. I don't think Mayer goes though. Just look at his tweets from today. Mayer staying would certainly be a good thing. I don't read tweets but my statements about him transferring were not based on anything i heard nor on anything factual. I presumed he would leave because of lack of any playing time, albeit one half or less, over the last half of the season. Since all guys want to play i presumed he would transfer but it would be great news if he was to stay. I was really impressed with Mayer at the start of the season. After the Cal Poly game (when he was one of our better players) he didn't seem to play at all. We have played 5 other left backs plus Mayer this season (Stevenson, Portillos, Balogun, Gallego and Brenes) which is strange. Does anybody know what happened to Mayer? I believe he injured his foot/toe and was out for some amount of time because of that. I heard (just heard, I am not certain) that he and Porter had a falling out. I hope not. I really had high hopes for him too, and thought we would have been able to pencil him in as our starting LB. I heard the same. I wasn't all that impressed with him anyways. He never really had a good first touch, and I saw him misread the ball more than once and let it go over his head when it should have been an easy header. Those kind of mistakes can cost big in the back line. He did look pretty good going forward though, and put in some really nice crosses with his left. I do think he could be pretty good next year if he can iron out the kinks. He wasn't ready this year. Come on, fellas. Dr. Z's gonna have a stroke! -
This is very good news. +1. But that tweet sounds awfully cocky and unremorseful for the pain his absence cost the team vs. WVU. I wish his tweet read something more along the lines of, "I'm back and want to appologize to my teammates and fans for letting you down when you needed me most. I promise this will never happen again. Go Zips!" That's more than 140 characters Excellent point.

Awesome job, Wags! I wish he played on a team where he didn't have to make so many tackles.
