And long snapper! And punter. Both graduating.

This is very good news. +1. But that tweet sounds awfully cocky and unremorseful for the pain his absence cost the team vs. WVU. I wish his tweet read something more along the lines of, "I'm back and want to appologize to my teammates and fans for letting you down when you needed me most. I promise this will never happen again. Go Zips!"

Maybe he saw Denzel Washington?

Once other schools are beating down his door, it's too late for us buddy. Every coach has to get his first shot in the big leagues from somebody. Brian Kelly's came from Central Michigan. They took a winner at a lower level nobody was "beating down the door" for. I don't think they regretted their decision. This is a guy who knows how to turn a program around and win. Instead of focusing on everybody else, focus on the Zips needs, and you'll see he's exactly what we need. Good point about Kelly. He was HC @ Grand Valley State, a school in the same conference as Paul Winters' Wayne State.

I'm sure there are a lot of lingering hard feelings about the Aeros moving to Akron from Canton. That had to hurt, especially a sportswriter. That said, I also trust Porter's reporting. He's usually on the money. I believe you are absolutely spot on. The Canton/Akron Indians move is precisely my theory over all the hating. I remember Steve Doershuk (sp?), another Rep sports columnist, writing for the Rep after Canal Park opened, about how Canal Park wasn't all that nice and how our downtown was ugly. Listen, Canton. Thurmun Munson Stadium was a disgrace & the AA ball club was going to relocate back toward the east coast. This was a while ago now, and I don't remember the details, but there were a handful of east coast cities that were going to build a new ballpark for the club. At least Akron got them. Canton was going to lose the club either way.

Frenchie mentioned that the bus(es?) were caught in traffic and were late to the game. True?

Amen. Who gives a crap about that ambiguous NE Ohio designation? The only time it is invoked is when it benefits Cleveland. Anytime Cleveland doesn't need it, it's the "Cleveland area," not "Northeast Ohio." This is AKRON. Our jerseys say AKRON. Not Northeast Ohio. The Cavs away jerseys say CLEVELAND. Not NORTHEAST OHIO. And definitely not AKRON. The Indians away jerseys say Cleveland. Not NORTHEAST OHIO. And definitely not Akron. The Browns rep CLEVELAND. Not NORTHEAST OHIO. And definitely not AKRON. The Vikings away jerseys say CLEVELAND STATE. Not NORTHEAST OHIO STATE. And definitely not AKRON. This is AKRON. Go Zips.

Okay, finally caught up to the end of the thread. I see the Ohio.com story. Oh well, that was fun. As bobbyake said, it felt like Christmas Eve. It really did. I haven't been that excited over something in years. Now we'll get into another interesting coaching search & get behind our new HC! Go Zips!

Sorry, but I happen to have an inside source on this one. The journalist has a good record and his sources were also good. It's just that they were not infallible. No need to trash someone just because we don't agree with their conclusion. Todd Porter's been around a long time. I do trust what he says. However, knowing the Suppository and their slant, I also know Porter would be salivating at the chance to prove Tressel is not coming to UA. The Suppository, for some reason, has a serious hatred of all things Akron.

If you do a search on "tressel" you will find it. I'm not sure where it was headlined earlier in the day, but it was not removed from the site as of 15 minutes ago. It's still up. It may have been taken down temporarily. My father emailed me a link to the story. When I clicked the link, it had been taken down (actually, I believe the page said it no longer existed.) However, it's back up again.
-
I think a lot of people felt good going into today. I woke up to the Sentinel article and started believing even more. Then came the "Tressel is on campus" stuff, and it got very real. When the "on campus" story turned out to be a lie, and was immediately followed by the Repository article, it was a bit of a buzzkill. Honestly, I'm where I was when this all started - I still believe there's a chance but won't get my hopes up either. It will be interesting to see what tomorrow brings. God bless Ian, a truly loyal and passionate Zips fan, but that false rumor about Tressel being on campus was a HUGE mistake. The Suppository article simply disproved the "Tressel on campus" rumor, but then quickly and eagerly made an illogical leap to the conclusion that the entire "Tressel as a possible Akron candidate" is fasle and laughable. I don't know if many of you are familiar with the style of the Canton Suppository, but in general, they love to paint Akron as small time, just like the Cleveland media (and, sadly, just like the ABJ ). If Tressel did become head coach @ UA, nobody would be as disappointed as Suppository writers. If Tressel is a somewhat serious candidate, that speaks well of the University of Akron and our football program.

Tom Gaffney on the HC search process.

bobbyake still hoping against hope!

+1.

The Martin Center is very elegant. Sounds like UA may be hosting a luncheon with JT and local community/business leaders?
-
Very clever. But this is no time for jokes!
-
I believe this is a distinct possibility. UA may just be sitting back, being silent & simply enjoying the attention right now. However, I think the fallout would be too negative were we all to eventually learn that JT was never a serious candidate, or, let alone, a candidate at all & the UofA was just leading everyone on. So, I'm going with JT being a very real, perhaps even likely, possibility right now.
-
I agree. But just to clarify, it was GoZips whom TW told that JT was in the realm of possibility. GoZips isn't a ZNO moderator. But he does give us more accurate inside information in regards to basektball than almost anyone on the board. (Edit): I see two of the ZNO moderators jumped in before I could post.

Ha. I just received a text from a friend who doesn't even follow UA athletics which read, "Jim Tressel to Akron?" This is getting out of control. The fact UA hasn't come out to officially deny the rumor has me feeling optimistic.
-
I disagree. His roles at this time is to take on consulting.... not just due to his years of expertise, knowledge of players, recruits, and coaches, and his connections there-in... but moreso because of how his future is foggy with the NCAA. He is perfect for being on, or assisting, a search committee. But again, wouldn't UA have at least tried to make it clear by now that Tressel is simply on the search committee?
-
+1. Man does Deji have good size, explosiveness & arms that reach to the ceiling, but he sure looked like a true freshman last night. AA is definitely this team's QB. We didn't stand much of a chance without him.

Early word is that Fick is the top choice
Blue & Gold replied to Buckzip's topic in Akron Zips Football
My father is not a UA alum (neither am I, for that matter - just an Akronite). But he's friends with Dennison & is still rather luke-warm toward UA for the whole Dennison-Faust thing. I love Dennison, but that whole debacle transpired before I was really old enough to understand what was going on. Dennison is awesome. -
+1. I'm admittedly hanging onto the JT rumors because I want them to be true. But, with my biased perspective on the table... doesn't this lead one to believe in the validity of the rumors? Wouldn't UA be in a hurry to crush the rumor precisely because of the reason you just stated? Especially considering the immense volume of smoke around this rumor right now?
-
You mean a press conference? I mean a job interview. Ahh, interesting. So they are lining up interviews. Probably not a good sign concerning Tressel coming here.
-
You beat me to it. Both of those guys were fairly highly rated Moore was recruited to the SEC. If put in the right system either could become all MAC or maybe they both truly do suck. However, based on this last season, everyone on the team, but Wagner, sucks. Anyone that thinks QB is our only issue is blind. Hey now, our long snapper, place kicker and punter were all very good!
