I know this is beating a dead horse, but...
Zipmeister replied to K92's topic in Akron Zips Football
Maybe it isn't an either/or situation. Maybe the word AND would fit better. If they don't want to open it, then fine. Just make the decision work some other way. If they want to open it, open it and make the decision work. Someone make a decision please and execute on a decision. At the end of Huckelberry Finn, Huck leaves Jim for more exploration and his relationship with Jim unfinished in many ways. It was Twain's way of comparing their relationship to the end of the Civil War. At the end of the Civil War, Americans focused to the west and largely ignored the race problem in the south. People have a way of moving on before tasks are completed. We see that here with the football stadium. They are now moving on to other "building" projects and leaving the big one they had somewhat incomplete. It's an old story. I think Sam stole the basic concept from Homer's Iliad. -
Clay Cameron (2010 Preferred Walkon)
Zipmeister replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
The first sentence of this piece has me wondering. "It has been nearly nine months since Tri-Valley's Clay Cameron capped a superb high football school career." I’m not sure whether to be happy the kid went to a football school or upset that apparently he was always high. I did learn something new. Had no idea walk-ons cannot start practicing at the same time scholarship players do. Also it sounds like the kid isn't sold on being a linebacker. Preferred walk-ons always go to camp with the team and are usually treated just like scholarship players with opportunities to compete for spots. Try-out walk-ons are added after tryouts the first week of the season, and are brought in as scout team fodder. Well that just doesn't seem right. Who are teams going to use to fill out their scout team for their first game if they can't even have walk-on tryouts until the first week of the season? And doesn't this put teams whose season starts later in the year at a disadvantage? Oh most preferred walk-ons will still end up on scout team once the season starts, as will all scholarship players getting redshirted or transfers sitting out (I hear Luke Getsy was one heluva scout team QB in '04). Preferred are just given an opportunity to compete and work in during camp, whereas the tryout guys, they'll be lucky if a coach or GA ever even learns their name.... they're scout team from the start. Being on scout team for the first game sucks because those guys never get a blow in practice, but once the try-out guys come in you have more bodies to throw in there and keep guys fresh. This was a wonderful explanation, but you completely ignored the inter-squad inequity issue. I believe the only way to correct this problem is to require all teams to start their seasons on the same week. Teams can have walk-on tryouts whenever they want, most teams just wait until school starts so they don't have to pay to house, transport, and feed a bunch of guys during camp who have no chance to play. I believe the NCAA cap for guys in camp is 105, but most teams won't carry that many to camp. I'm not really sure where the inequity is? Now hold on a sec there partner. You told me before that tryouts were not held until the first week of the season. Now you say they can be held anytime they want. That means that they could hold them the week before practice starts, but the guy who wrote the article which started me wondering in the first place says that regular walk-ons cannot start practicing at the same time as scholarship players. So just what's goin on here? Were you streachen the truth before, or now? What do you not understand?? At Akron, walk-on tryouts are the first week of school (at least they always have been), so if you aren't a preferred walk-on, you can't start practicing until the first week of school when you make the team. There's no NCAA rule on when you can hold walk-on tryouts, but almost all programs hold them when school starts. There's no point in bringing in scout team guys when there's no scout team in camp, and there's no point in paying for guys to eat and sleep on campus when they will be getting no reps in camp. What the heck are you confused about, and where exactly did I contradict myself? I don't understand why you keep changing your explanation. First, it was they can't hold tryouts till the first week of the season. Then, it was whenever they want. Now, it's the first week of school. Three explanations, three start times, and you don't see where you are contradicting yourself! -
Well if we are opening the field up to nonAkron references, in Terminator II they do mention they are headed towards Mexico at one point.

Even though he's not on the mainland, you'd be hard pressed to name a board member who is more informed about the UA's soccer program, past and present, than Z.I.P. I don't think it's clearcut whether or not soccer could ever truly thrive in our area. But those of you who give it no chance to ever happen, I believe, are skewed by either their lack of involvement in the game, or their disdain for the game, or both. Does it surprise anyone here that the Seattle Sounders, with one of the worst records in MLS, still are able to draw over 30,000 fans for each home game? Some of you will cite the eccentric nature of those who live in the Pacific Northwest as the reason for this apparent anomaly. But that's a convenient conclusion to draw for someone who has already made their mind up on the issue. I believe the MLS, while not without it's problems (especially DC United), will experience significant attendance increases with the expansion into Vancouver, Portland, and Montreal over the next two years. As the health of MLS improves, the chances for new successful franchises to be established anywhere in the US will no doubt improve as well. Of course, the expected nasty labor relations foreseen in the "big" pro sports leagues in the coming years wouldn't hurt MLS either. Please don't misinterpret my post. It had nothing to do with whether this gentleman is "knowledgable about UA soccer'. I actually admire his passion for the sport. Secondly, I was simply being informative about our soccer program's success in past decades, not knowing whether he is old enough to have been around when we had all of our other good teams going back 20-30 years. Oh, I understood what you meant. I just found it peculiar that someone as active as you are on this board didn't realize how long Z.I.P. had been following UA soccer and soccer in general. Your attempt to "inform" him of UA's soccer history gave me a little chuckle. That's all. No harm, no foul (foul works in lot's of sports). Actually, the Zips soccer success now goes back more than 40 years.

The newlyweds the Griswalds meet in Paris in "European Vacation" are from Akron. and One of the sleeper agents in "Telephon" was in Akron. The original movie even gave a real Akron phone number that they called to set the guy off. I can't remember exactly what the guy was supposed to blow up, probably the Rubber Bowl, but I called the number and it was disconnected. Wonder how many crank calls the guy at that number got before he figured out what was going on and had it disconnected?

Outcome Predictions for ZIPS 1st Possession against Syracuse
Zipmeister replied to dreal1scout's topic in Akron Zips Football
Call me whatever..., But I don't think that is too far-fetched. Oh come on dreal. You really think it's going to take us one play to score. Since when did you join the pessimist club? Obviously we score on the kick off, and it doesn't matter whether we are kicking or receiving. Really now, get a more positive attitude. -

"The experience that he was able to gain on the field in-game, along with his limited work thus far in the 3-4, has Corner looking forward to the imminent competition." Rats, if only Reggie had experience in the 3-4 in college that might help his chances.

To reply to your "real" question, I say yes. There are a lot of sports fans in the area, and they're looking for something worth supporting. There are fans who want to see a quality team, there are a zillion football fans, there are basketball fans, soccer fans, baseball fans. With football and basketball and baseball there are a lot of other teams out there and you gotta GOTTA have a good entertaining program. Going 3-9 or 3-24 isn't going to sell many tickets... For soccer, the market is wide open. But for any of these sports, if it's a good team and marketed well, they will beat a path to the U. I have been saying the same thing for weeks now about gun shooting and club baseball.

I think they are making space for a new player. Denise J. Cooper. It's posted on the biglead.com. Copied below (hope the attached file thing works) Ohio University point guard DJ Cooper must have sensed there would be that all too familiar lull in world of sports news and took it upon himself to revive the pulse in the form of a fancy bikini top. Um, well done? I’m sure his teammates will let him forget about this one by the end of the week. The image amazingly comes via Mr. Cooper’s own twitter account. Yummy. A little pocket pool action going on too.

That pretty much sums it up. And an emphasis on the word "small". Sorry, but that's just the way it is. And I don't see that ever changing. You guys are getting way off base with the football vs. soccer question. The REAL question is will the people in and around Akron support local COLLEGE ATHLETICS? Skip must have missed the REAL question in the opening post, but he did address one of the main questions in the opening post, AND he didn't use a baseball-related phrase to make a comment about the football/soccer issue like you did.

When was women's athletics relevant before?

Thank goodness the Reverend Jackson has entered the fray. Now all the oppressed NEOhio sports fans are sure to receive justice.

OK. so Labron's mom is a bitch. That's no reason to go off half-cocked STZ. -
Since it appears that you are an expert on those topics, why don't you start one. The moderators don't like it when people start multiple threads on the same topic. This ones working just fine for people who truly believe Lebron owes them or Cleveland loyalty.

The Minnesota Vikings drafted QB Joe Webb out of UAB this past April, with thoughts of converting him into "The Next Josh Cribbs." They gave him a token look at QB, and now he's #3 on the QB depth chart. You never know how things pan-out. I give the Cameron credit for doing whatever it takes to get his foot in the door. I'm thinking he may make a good number 3 QB here. Slow QBs hurt you less than slow linebackers. -
