I agree. I just didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea. I think Wil deserves "the business", too, mostly for re-tweeting that picture.

http://www.mlssoccer.com/24under24/news/article/2014/09/25/discovering-deandre-how-seattle-sounders-found-developed-deandre-yedlin A few excerpts... By then he’d also caught the eye of Akron head coach Caleb Porter, who had served as an assistant with the US Under-18 team when Yedlin was called in as a junior in high school. The Zips won a national title in 2010 using an aggressive and effective right back in Kofi Sarkodie, but there was a hole in the lineup after Sarkodie departed for MLS, drafted by the Houston Dynamo in 2011. The Sounders played it safe, and Yedlin went to Akron. Sounders assistant Kurt Schmid watched him play a number of times his freshman year and Yedlin returned to Seattle the summer after his freshman year a more confident player. The faults that hurt him during his younger years – a sometimes clumsy first touch and errant crossing – had improved, and he was beginning to truly grasp when to best use his speed in attack so that his team wouldn’t get caught on the counterattack. Yedlin returned to Akron his sophomore year and excelled again for the Zips, leaving no doubt about his professional future. The Sounders made him the franchise’s first-ever Homegrown player in January 2013 and unveiled him at the MLS SuperDraft in Indianapolis four days later.

Yes. Sorry. The AK Rowdies were holding up a Timbers Army scarf and chanting "P-T F-C" at the people in the crowd wearing Crew gear.
-
I feel a little bad for getting on Wil. He's a Columbus homegrown and a great player. So, the Crew looks to him to be a face of the team around the city, including, unfortunately for us and him, tOSU. I'm sure that involves some things he'd rather avoid, but his connection to the Crew's fans helps them put butts in their seats. I can guarantee everyone here Wil was sitting next to me and applauding for the Zips. He was upset/worried like the rest of the Zips fans when the Buckeyes scored the goal to tie the game at 1-1. He was as happy as any Zips fan when we took the lead, got the third goal, and watched Jake save that pk.
-
Awesome! I saw CP give another fan wearing a Buckeye cap all kinds of crap at a meet the team event on the 5th floor of Infocision Stadium. Even though he graduated and played for a B1G school, he truly loved our (his/our) program at Akron. He celebrated its history and truly believed he could take it to new heights like he did. He really believed Akron could be more than a mid-major, too. But, of course, that assumes that all alumni and students support the Zips like those on ZN.o. I remember talking to him after the Zips defeated IU 1-0 in the Notre Dame Tournament. He remarked how awesome it was to defeat his alma mater, AGAIN!
-
Apologies to the AK Rowdies. I should never have told you to take it easy on the "PT FC" when Wil arrived. You'd never see CP posing with Brutus. He would've made Brutus feel so bad he'd have taken his nuts home like the asst ref who took his flag and stormed out of the elite 8 game vs Cal in 2010.

I totally agree with you a-zip. Jared and the players are learning and getting it done. Wil Trapp told me last night, what we've all seen, that the Zips look night and day better than they did in the Maryland exhibition game [he attended at FES-CCF]. Jared, his staff, and this team are doing fine. We need to continue to support them and bring the sizable crowds at home. I wish I could be at Wake Forest to support them in person.
-
The only comment that I will make is that I was told that Dr. Scarborough, while attending the Tulsa game at FES-CCF, commented how much fun it was, and that he'd have to come to more games. GO ZIPS! EDIT: I forgot, one of the Zips fans who lives in Columbus said that the plan for a new Crew Stadium with a number of practice fields is a pipe dream that's been discussed for the last 15 or so years. Let's take any further discussion of this over to the other thread. I agree with Balsy we shouldn't upset anyone in this thread.
-
I guess there is a difference in that Jared inherited a successful team with most everything in place. But, he still deserves time to "settle" into his new position. Being the Head Coach is significantly different from being an assistant. With the homegrown "explosion" in MLS, I think it's also becoming more and more difficult to pick up the national team academy players. Finally, if you look back at out College Cup teams, Blair Gavin, Anthony Ampaipitakwong, Scott Caldwell, Zarek Valentin, and others that I may be forgetting knew each other from the IMG Academy. That was an awesome stroke of luck/recruiting prowess to be able to get so many players who already knew each other and likely had at least some playing time together before coming to Akron.

By the way, in my list, I forgot to mention former Zip Aodhan Quinn was there, too. On the off chance that Aodhan reads this...very, very, very SORRY that I left you out of my original list. It was great being reunited with you, the Barsons, the Trapps, Paula Stevenson, et al. When the AK Rowdies did "I Believe that We Have Won" with the team, Mrs. Trapp said something along the lines of 'Ah, I miss that. It's so good to hear that again.' It was a GREAT night to be a Zips fan. Beat OSU 3-1. Jake Fenlason blocked a pk (in your face Buckeye Nation ) that could have made it 3-2 with enough time remaining for a potential tying goal. And, a nice reunion with numerous awesome people. Pleasant 1.5 hour drive home after that.
-
Wil never told me he did that. Wait 'til I see him again Saturday!!
-
Beating the Buckeyes is even sweeter when you have Columbus Crew and former Zips MidFielder Wil Trapp sitting with you and cheering for the Zips! Chad Barson couldn't make it, but his parents were there as were Wil's and Mrs Stevenson, Stu Parry, Bill Parry, and other former Zips coaches and a good group of AK Rowdies. Awesome evening. Ref was horrible. Jared was chewing him out followed by his assistants. One of the assistants got the YC. Well worth it to tell that MF (not mid-fielder) how great a job he was not doing.

I agree DiG. I liked his speech overall. That's why I said earlier in this thread, if his actions follow this speech, he could be better than his predecessor. Huge challenge. -

Happy to say I was at that Crew v DCU game in Cbus in which Wil ran down Espindola, took the ball to midfield and served up the perfect pass to Jiminez who scored. Celebrated that with Wil and his family in the Crew Stadium parking lot after the game. Great guy, Great player. So proud that he's a proud former Zip! Hope he and the U23's qualify for the Brazil Olympics in 2016. I would love to see him in another International match. For those headed to tOSU tomorrow night, Wil will definitely be in the stands among the Zips fans. GO ZIPS! BeatTheBuckeyes!

WOW the south hillside was only going to be used when the rest of the seating sold out. Depressing to look back at our hopes and dreams. Brookhart's last season, then iCoach. Now we're hoping for miracles (again) from TB. Right now I would settle to win the MAC regardless of whether or not "Joe Akron" exists and shows up. To hell with "Joe Akron". 2005 was fun. How many fans did the Zips draw that season? Alumni jumped on the bandwaggon to go to and see their alma mater in a Bowl game. Didn't Akron sell 15k tickets for that game?

http://www.uakron.edu/im/news/the-power-and-the-promise-of-public-higher-education ...This university is not a vocational school, nor is it a certification factory: it is a refinery of minds. Thomas Jefferson said, “The basis of our government (is) the opinion of the people.” I would argue that the transformative power of higher education—the ability to think critically and communicate effectively—is more necessary today than in Jefferson’s time. In his day, citizens were fed just a trickle of information and news. Today, we are continually bombarded by waves of opinions and dubious facts in the midst of important and truly useful information. How do we as citizens of a democratic republic determine what is true and what is not if not for the transformative power of higher education? Can our nation endure without a highly educated electorate and decision-makers?... -

EDITTED: I mistakenly used the out of state surcharge for UA rather than the in-state tuition rates. Turns out Akron is only slightly less expensive for tuition and fees (Ohio resident) Akron: $9,922/year 12-16 credit hours tOSU: $10,037/year full time -

By the way DiG, I agree with this as long as "these opportunities offer a solid return on investment and don't interfere with UA's primary obligation to it's students", as you state. One thing that really drives me insane about the tOSWho's money-making athletics machine and that of other schools in the same "league" is that all of the money seems to go back into sports or funding more athletes in a large number of sports and who knows where else. How about using some of that revenue for education of the masses and lowering tuition costs. I don't think tOSWho's tuition rates are much different than UA's (I didn't look them up; so, I could be wrong) even though they generate so much revenue from sports and membership in the B1G. I suspect they spend a lot of money sending numerous people to watch their NCAA playoff and bowl games among other schmoozing with well-to-do donors and influential persons and "to hell with the masses". Now that I think of it, perhaps I should request public records from the high and mighty tOSWho. I'd like to see what they tell me is open and available vs "trade secret". I bet no one here would get upset if I mentioned the State of Ohio Attorney General in correspondence with them. -

I agree this is a dead issue. You also may be correct about future potential business arrangements and whether or not alarms will be raised. I happen to be close enough to this one that I was well aware of some of the potential downsides. So, I was sensitive to it and raised an alarm to those who share my passion in the Soccer forum. As I got into it more, I realized there were potentially more downsides than I had originally considered. It's human nature to get "riled up" over something you're passionate about and then realize there's actually more to it. -

Importance of these things depends upon your point of view. If you're a current student or a prospective student, mistakes even by well-meaning people who aren't "a disciplined organization, with disciplined people engaged in disciplined thought and actions" that can lead to significant increases in tuition and fees likely matters to you, especially if you're working your butt off and/or racking up significant debt to pay for your education. It's easy for public employees to make decisions without disciplined thought when they're spending someone else's money. I'm glad you already have your degree DiG such that this doesn't matter to you. My nephew, who is currently enrolled at UA, and his mother care deeply about tuition and fee costs, irrespective of Zips Soccer, Zips Football, or the Cleveland Browns. Conceit in U.S. professional sports doesn't mean anything to me. I only attend MLS games these days. I love watching and keeping in touch with Kofi Sarkodie, DeAndre Yedlin, Caleb Porter, Darlington Nagbe, Michael Nanchoff, Scott Caldwell, Wil Trapp, Chad Barson, and their families, to name a few. EDIT: The games are much more fun to watch when you care about the people playing and the sport itself. Awesome people all of whom I respect and support and who built something great at UA. I refuse to have it and them disrespected by people who are clueless about soccer. EDIT2: Stu Parry, who started Zips Mens Soccer, and his family attend Zips Mens Soccer games. Great people. I won't allow them to be disrespected either. What a slap in the face it would be for Stu Parry to have to see football gridlines on a torn up Cub Cadet Field. Asking the State Attorney General for a clarification of UA's position on something being a "trade secret" based on case law isn't litigation and not a threat. I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not going to try to interpret case law. I don't recall anyone threatening litigation in this thread or any other related threads. Now who's the conspiracy theorist? -
After a little research (<1 minute on Google), I've discovered it appears that the Ohio Big Foot Conference has passed for 2014, but here's the link for 2015. I thought it might be a good place for you to pick up some new sources. Perhaps the Sasquatch Summit which is coming up in November would help, but it will cost you to fly to the PNW. I didn't have time to look through their agenda, but maybe they have some training classes to help you with tracking down legendary creatures and their land usage habits. Might be well worth spending some of your time. There could be someone there who could help you hone your skills at doctoring .pdfs, .jpgs, and other such files, too. Hope this helps. EDIT: I almost forgot. Stay away from anyone who has any real information, especially if they have the ability to think critically. Facts could really hurt what you're trying to accomplish. Also, you shouldn't let human intelligence get in your way. I wonder if perhaps you should look at courses offered at UA's rival university in Portage County. I bet they have a lot to offer to help you steer clear of such things. Best wishes in your endeavors.

+1 I hope we have Zips fans show up in sizable numbers. I know Wil Trapp will be there and hopefully Chad Barson, too. fixed the 2nd sentence. I hate when I make typos and don't catch them because I'm in such a hurry to post.
