Some more pictures...from today (8-7-10). Soccer Pitch Upgrades August 7, 2010 -
Good article by Dohrmann. Next year is the U-17 (and I think U-19) World Cup, in Mexico. A good chance that future Zips Will Trapp and Bryan Gallego will be part of the U17s, as well as recruiting target Andrew Souder of Premier Academy -- now playing for Crew Academy. Zarek Valentin will be a star at MLS level, and will be quickly replaced by another star. Anyone who saw Perry Kitchen plan in last year's U17 WC saw what a fantastic long passer he is out of the back. Look forward to seeing him lead counterattacks beginning in mere weeks, if he can earn a spot in the lineup. Perry got a lot of playing time with the Zips in the Spring and looked great. It's awesome that he has already put in a semester at The U of A.

The greatest sport in the world, "football", is called "soccer" in the U.S.A. So, what's your point? I have bitten my tongue long enough. I wish the soccer Zips well and would never make disparaging comments about the team even though I have zero interest in the sport itself. The same courtesy is not extended by some of our soccer fans when speaking about the football Zips. I hope the soccer team wins every game, going from pre-season number one all the way through to NCAA champions! Because I am a Zip. And I wish ALL the Zip athletes success. If you are gonna take jabs at the football program and compare them to the soccer program, stay on the soccer board. If you are gonna make comments about soccer being a better sport than football or more popular world-wide than football, stay on the soccer board. Popularity abroad means nothing. David Hasslehoff is a star in Germany. The French think Jerry Lewis is a comedic genius. We are talking about NCAA sports here. According the latest statistics I could find from the NCAA, the largest crowd ever at an NCAA soccer game was 22,512 back in 1980. In 2008, the 86th ranked football team on the list, Central Michigan, averaged 22,659 for their home games. Here are the links. http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/stats/footb...ndance/2008.pdf http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/stats/m_soc.../Attendance.pdf Stop hating on the football program. Did I say I hated the football program? I made a "jab" back at some of the folks who find it necessary to state that American football is better than soccer on the soccer forum. Before you become all "self-righteous", I invite you to check out the other forums. I wish our football team the best. I want to see them do well. I have a football season ticket and soccer season ticket, unlike some who come into the soccer forum and say they would not spend one second watching soccer. EDIT: What I was commenting on was the arrogance of "the greatest sport in the world", for which American Football was implied. Arrogance like the NFL putting "World Champions" on the Super Bowl Champion rings. It's not a world championship; the world doesn't compete. Super Bowl Champions or NFL Champions, but not world champions. Soccer (or football as the rest of the world calls it) actually has a World Championship played every 4 years. So when you mention NCAA...no that was not the reference of the post I was replying to...it was "world". Guess I am FIRED UP like the thread title. Good night.

+1 I really considered going to Carolina, but I have a mini-vacation in LA in a few weeks during which I will be fortunate to see Chivas vs Seattle (Gavin & Zemanski v Zakuani), and I really want to go to the College Cup again if given the opportunity. So, I just can't justify the additional trip when there's a good football matchup at home. ESPN2, FSC, or somebody should pick up the UA v UNC game. In at least 1 poll, it is #1 v #2, and a re-match of a 2009 semi-final. (Not saying that I believe it will be televised; just saying it should be.)
-
You're right. I mis-read that. Hmm. 2 minutes from campus and thinks we're crap. Is he an editor for the Beacon Journal? ...back to talking about being pre-season #1: YEAH!!! A good sign before the other polls come out (should be soon). Looks like the National Soccer Coaches Association of America pre-season poll will be out on August 10th. Zach, I think you should register for that site, just to ask this dipwad how he can stand to work so close to such a pit. And to express sympathy for such low self esteem. You think he's a Wake alum? Maybe the Great GP1 can offer therapy -- or at least some insight to his thinking. I have a Scout login, but you need to obtain permission to post on a particular school's forum. I can't get permission to post on WF's boards. But I can't think of any residential area within 2 minutes of campus that isn't a ghetto. Don't want to embarrass him in front of his fellow snobs. Not sticking up for him, but he stated that he 'works', not 'lives' 2 minutes from U of A. At least he recognized it as "U of A" and not AU. (Although I tend to think of our men's soccer program as gold...Au.)

I've been debating this Zach. But, the financial reality will likely win out ... stay home for the Syracuse football game and save for a December trip to Santa Barbara. Go Zips!!!

No problem. I haven't been over to campus that often lately; so, I know how it is to want to see pictures. Sorry all I had was my cell phone camera. -

The USA won. USA 3 N. Ireland 0 http://www.nimilkcup.org/?tabindex=23&tabid=3575 MILK CUP RESULTS Elite Section Northern Ireland Milk Cup Winners - U.S.A. Runners up - N. Ireland 3rd - Denmark 4th - Mexico 5th - Japan 6th - China http://www.nimilkcup.org/?module=datalistd...88-0d583dc81a9b U.S. U-20 Men's National Team Wins Milk Cup with Emphatic 3-0 Victory Against Host Northern Ireland http://www.ussoccer.com/News/U-20-MNT/2010...s-Milk-Cup.aspx BALLYMENA, Northern Ireland (July 30, 2010) – The U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team took the Milk Cup title with a 3-0 win against tournament host Northern Ireland at the Showgrounds in Ballymena. Gale Agbossoumonde, Juan Agudelo and Adrian Reulas each scored for the U.S., which dominated the match to take its first Milk Cup title since 2005. U.S. goalkeeper Zac MacMath marshalled a solid defensive unit that included Zarek Valentin, Agbossoumonde, Perry Kitchen and Greg Garza. The group held Northern Ireland to just seven shots, none of which were especially dangerous for MacMath. The U.S. earned its place in the final with wins against China (1-0) and Denmark (3-2), and was the only team in the Elite Section to win its first two matches. Rongen used every field player on his roster and both goalkeepers during the three-game tournament. Against Northern Ireland, the U.S. took the lead in the 24th minute, when Agbossoumonde, who wore the captain’s armband in all three games, lined up a free kick from 20 yards. He took a long run up to the ball and fired it through the wall, giving the ‘keeper no chance to react as the ball skipped into the side netting. The American side continued to press, and had a goal disallowed just moments later. In the 43rd minute, Agudelo pounced on a ball just inside his attacking half, and, with a great individual effort, went past two defenders. He created enough space to wind up his shot, lifting the ball over goalkeeper Wayne Drummond and dipping it just under the crossbar to double the U.S. lead before the half. In the second half, a great passing combination led Valentin wide with the ball near the end line. The Akron defender turned and slotted the ball back for strike partner Ruelas, who hit the ball first time and ripped it into the far post from 15 yards for his third goal of the Milk Cup.

Thanks 72 Roo. That's how I thought it was playing out, but didn't know for certain. I'm very happy with what we're getting this year. Last year I convinced a number of soccer fans at work to come to a game; they loved what they saw and kept coming back. They're also telling others about Akron soccer. Hopefully, we'll see a lot of games with large crowds. -

ouch...not even close. It's too bad. From what I saw in person last Saturday, it looks great and appears to be easily expandable. There should be space to add more bleachers on the south side and, if the tennis courts are coming out, seating could eventually be added on the north side behind the team benches. To me, the #1 priority is the field. I hope that the turf has had time to take hold and that the drainage system works as planned. I don't ever want to see the Zips have to move any of their home games to an alternate field again. BTW...I saw part of (tuned in late) a replay of Coach Porter's talk at the Akron [City Club (?)] last night on Time Warner (original date was late May 2010)...I'm totally ready for this season to start. GO ZIPS! Also, nice pick, by Coach Porter, of Spain as a definite possibility to win the 2010 World Cup. First team he mentioned when asked. -

I didn't see it, but here's an article with more detail. The answer to your question is, Yes. Article -
Just having fun with you Zach. Your last sentence threw me off. http://zipsnation.org/forums//index.php?s=...st&p=117794 Last year's Zips squad proved that height doesn't really matter. I doubt this is the case with Akron getting these two, but most colleges will often choose to go after players who are big-bodied and play physical kick-the-ball-forward american style soccer instead of shorter ones who know how to play the beautiful game. I don't think that's what Akron is doing here, as I said. I just don't see the need for taller players in soccer outside the keeper position.

I thought I read that height wasn't any sort of advantage in soccer? You caught that, too.

U.S. U-20 MNT Tops China at the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland July 27, 2010 BALLYMENA, Northern Ireland (July 26, 2010) -- The U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team opened its campaign at the prestigious Milk Cup with a 1-0 victory against China. Forward Omar Salgado scored the game's only goal in the 18th minute, while goalkeeper Zac MacMath and defenders Zarek Valentin, Perry Kitchen, Gale Agbossoumonde and Greg Garza held onto the shutout. Valentin was mobile from his right back position and got forward in the first half via a give and go with Alex Molano to get into the corner. Valentin touched it back for Molano, who played a good ball into the area, where the 6-foot 4-inch Salgado jumped over his defender to head the ball in at he back post in his first international game. The U.S. will next play Denmark on Wednesday, July 28, at 8 p.m. local time (3 p.m. ET) with a chance to advance to the championship game of the tournament's Elite division. No. We needed someone who has proven that they know how to run a football program as a head coach. How in love are you with Notre Dame that you believe that Ianello is at all qualified to do that just by virtue of him cleaning Charlie Weis' man-bras? Notre Dame is not what it used to be, it's not some great college football mecca, and hasn't been for 20 years. Stop living in the past. Notre Dame is just a step above the MAC, and a step behind the big Ten. Being at a "big program" just means that they don't understand what it takes to run a program that isn't big. At all his previous jobs, Ianello's recruits were falling over themselves to join a BCS school or Notre Dame. He didn't have to work to get recruits at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_Meyer If you do some research, life will be easier for you down the road. But you are young and prone to being rash. But since you are a Zip...I have high hopes for you still!!! ;-) Go Zips!!!! You're right, Darkwaters. Praise from SAF! I was thinking maybe he was referring to Kei Kamara, who had a goal and assist, but Teal WAS playing the central striker. We'll take it!
