To me, it's obvious that Brady Quinn > Charlie Frye. Quinn had better stats in college and has more pure ability than C Frye. sgm, My only argument with you is that you tend to overstate things. It is not obvious that Brady Quinn > Charlie Frye. Stats don't make anything obvious. Even Phil Savage said that this draft could eventually be proven to be a mistake. (I'm forgetting his actual words, and he wasn't specifically referring to Quinn.) There is no way to tell until Quinn actually plays in the NFL.I guess my problem is that I don't like bashing people, especially people who work hard. Charlie certainly has a great work ethic. I wish the Browns would have given him more (mentoring, a decent offensive system, better OL) with which to work. I hope he is able to go elsewhere and prove all of the Frye haters wrong. He's a fellow alum, and I will always wish him well, even if he played for the Baltimore Ravens ( ).

I disagree with that 100%.First of all, the local players need to want to come to U of A. And their coaches need to promote U of A as a solid option. That's not happening right now. The best local kids go elsewhere. And I don't want the local table scraps. If the best of the area don't want to play here, then we must look elsewhere.Look at Travis and Joyce - Undeniably two of the biggest "local" HS names of the past decade. They played before a 1/2 empty JAR for the better part of their careers. Why? Because they didn't win championships. When they finally won a championship (of sorts) the JAR was filled for the stretch run.To insinuate people don't follow the Zips because a percentage of kids are from western Pa is nuts. Does everyone dislike Jason Taylor because he's from Pittsburgh? No. Zips fans love the guy. Who wants David Harvey, right? He's from the hated Pittsburgh area! Ummmm...no, that's not the case. Once he puts his helmet on, he's a Zip and no one cares which piece of land he hails from. Harvey was, in fact, arguably the most popular Zips player in 2007.No one is excited to see Steve Sweich this upcoming basketball season, right? He's from the Pittsburgh area! Wrong...everyone here can't wait to see him play.Everyone loved Charlie Frye. Ask 100 Zips fans to find Willard Ohio on a blank state map and I bet 50% would miss it by 100 miles. His popularity came from being able to "ball." Not because he was perceived as local.Browns fans...typically also OSU fans...would hate Braylon Edwards even if he had 1,600 yard and 15 TDs becuase he's from Michigan, right? Come on...there'd be 10,000+ Edwards jerseys at every Browns home game and 8,000 of those would be on the backs of buckeye fans.People will follow a winner. It is as simple as that, and no different than in any other town. They'll still follow a non-winning team IF they are rebuilding from a winning season. People will not, en mass, support consistently bad or medioce teams. And they won't show up to see athletes simply because they're "local."If a local star wants to stay home, that's great. I know JD's staff had offers out to six Akron area HS Juniors as early as January 2007. If they don't want to attend U of A, there's noting we can do about it. Except recruit the best kids we can, and win games. I absolutely agree CK. I also think the new on-campus football stadium will be a huge help to the football program. Those living on or near campus will be able to access it easily; it will be new; and, for those of us driving in from places as far as 30 or more miles away, I'd much prefer to actually come to our beautiful renovated campus (Landscape for WINNING).

Even though I am a Browns fan, the Browns are the worst franchise in the NFL. I personally happen to like Brady Quinn and Charlie Frye. Charlie was never really given a chance, and any Browns fan that says he was is an IDIOT. No line, no coordinator, no veteran from whom to learn...what an opportunity. Now, another QB whom I respect gets to be sacrificed. I'm happy for Brady Quinn that he thinks his childhood dream just came true...but be careful what you wish for, you may get it. I regret the day the Browns drafted Charlie and how happy I was. This very likely could be one of the worst days of Quinn's life. I don't see him getting any more help than Couch, Holcomb, Garcia, Dilfer, Frye, or Anderson. The best thing that can happen for Charlie is to be traded elsewhere. As for Brady Quinn, I just hope somehow he can survive.

What matters about Cleveland Browns Stadium in that it is a PRO STADIUM...where our football players should aspire to be following college. Ohio Stadium is meaningless in that regard.

Back to topic...At the Honor's College presentation to the high school junior's today, the Dean of the Honors College said that they will have the kicker for the football team in the Honor's College this year.

While at the Blue-Gold game...I overheard that Matta wanted a 3 for 1, and Akron, rightfully, said 'No'. I also overheard something about a team that was 2500 miles away playing the Zips at the Q. That must have been Gonzaga. Thanks for the tidbits. Wish I could have been at the banquet.

I thought I overheard Steve french say that there is some big wrestling tournament at the Field House next weekend. That's why the Spring Game was yesterday. I think it worked out better this way anyhow since Ohio State has their Spring Game next weekend. (I won't say anymore on that subject.)

Thanks for posting that. Best wishes for Andy.

I feel terrible for the Kansas State alumini, students, players, etc., but a coach is a person too. I believe Bob Huggins father, Charlie, still lives in Tuscarawas County, Ohio and is a member of the New Phildelphia Baptist Church. I also believe Bob Huggins mother passed away not too long ago. You can't fault a person for wanting to be closer to his family. You can joke about West Virginia and say blah, blah, blah all you want about returning to your roots. But, I know it was hard for me when I lived 600+ miles away and my father passed away. As soon as I got the opportunity to return home to Ohio, I took it to be closer to my family. Sometimes a person just has to take an opportunity when it presents itself.

I met Sean and talked with him for quite awhile at last April's (2006) football Open House at the Field House. He seemed very dedicated to winning at UA and happy with his decision to come to here. I don't know if he's ready yet, but I sure hope he gets a chance. He certainly has the right attitude. I look forward to seeing him in the Spring game on the 15th.Since he was born in Dublin, OH, he might also have a little extra incentive to kick some Buckeye butt.

Jim Tressel is 62-14 at OSU in 5 years, 4-2 in Bowl games, and 1-1 in National Title games. Certainly not perfect, but pretty damn good. Last year they went 12-1, with the only loss being against Florida. How exactly is that "less than remarkable"??? My post was badly phrased...I meant that he has had one season that was less than remarkable. Thus, it is not a forgone conclusion that the Zips will lose.
-
I agree that we have a chance against Ohio State. The Buckeyes don't know who their QB is, and they struggled prior to Troy Smith. They've got other holes to fill, and they're not unbeatable.I would appreciate if the Nation had a little more faith. If we don't, then how can we expect our team to? But the Zips don't know who their QB is either. If they did, I really do think they'd have a shot. But Chris Wells > Dennis Kennedy and OSU Defense > Akron Defense...so I don't think it'll be much of a match. And how did OSU struggle prior Troy Smith? He began starting or at least sharing starting duties in 04-05...the previous year they won the Fiesta Bowl and finished #4 in the country...the year before that they were National Champs. Excuse me, you forgot 2004 when they lost to Northwestern, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Purdue, and went to the top rated Alamo Bowl. How far do you want to go back? They won big time the two years before Smith. Your comment came across as the Bucks couldn't win without Troy Smith...so I proved it wrong. That's all. I didn't go back any further than you did. (I went to 2004; you went to 2002.)My point was not that the Buckeyes can't win without Smith; my point was that Tressel is not infallable. Not just because of the Florida blowout, but he has had a less than remarkable season.
-
I can't believe that we are arguing this. My point is that if you believe you can't do something, then you won't. I hope all of you naysayers stay at home in Akron and do not attend this game. I intend to go to the Shoe with a little better outlook/expectation than this.I never said that the Zips will win, but I wouldn't bother to go if I didn't think they had a chance.

OMG...I hope our players don't read this thread. If they think like this, then UA has NO CHANCE. And, I personally don't want them to live down to these expectations.

I agree RowdyZip. What I hate about these threads is that loyal Zips fans trash other loyal Zips fans. I hate that! Celebrate the Zips. Disagree with the opinions of other Zips fans. But, we're all united in our love for the Zips, so why bash each other.
-
For anyone who grew up in Ohio, it is not ridiculous to be a Buckeye fan. I was a Buckeye fan long before I attended the University of Akron. Now that I am a UA Alumnus, UA is #1. But, being a Zips fan does not mean that I cannot be a Buckeye fan. As has been pointed out many times, the Zips and Buckeyes are not in the same conference and do not compete head-to-head often. When they do, I definitely want the Zips to win.I am an OHIOAN...a BUCKEYE. Why should I be happy that Florida beat Ohio State?
-
SGM, i agree. That was the point of my post...that the NCAA and NIT FEAR THE ROO, so we were not invited. Let's move on and be positive about next season!
-
BTW...Since the NCAA runs both the NCAA and NIT now, I meant the NCAA as a whole (either tourney). But, CK's response was what I was really expecting.Thanks.
-
I think you shoudn't quit your day job. I agree. Thanks Captain!
-
Maybe I shouldn't bring this up again because a number of people wanted to drop it, but it is possible to make something positive out of the T-shirt idea. How about something like:26 and 7 overall13 and 1 at homeNo NCAA invitation…FEAR THE ROO!

Letter To Coach Dambrot, Coaches & Team.
Zip_ME87 replied to Zip Watcher's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Very well thought out and said Zip Watcher. This is the kind of e-mail that I hope Coach Dambrot, staff, and team are receiving.I sent a supportive/positive e-mail 2 days ago, but it dwarfs in comparison to the sentiments you have stated here. -
I'm with you. Go Redhawks! I read mostly supportive posts on their board as well and all of my colleagues who graduated from other MAC schools including Miami (and K.e.n.t) have been sympathetic and supportive.
-
Certainly can't count on the MAC to promote it. They can't properly promote a basketball tournament in an arena that's connected via walkway to the building where their offices are located. How could they possibly promote a football game in a stadium that's a number of blocks down the street?
