What if he never figures it out? Almost to my thirties, I am just now fully realizing how much I enjoy chicken wings and beer. I want to fully realize my potential before it is too late.

We were close to winning a few times last year. The net effect of losing some wideouts will be depreciated because our offense will be more balanced. The defense will be better against the run just considering our alignment change. Running the ball to chew some clock will reduce the amount of time we have to shoot ourselves in the foot. With a little luck, and the maturation of some young skilled players, I don't think a 6-7 win season is too much. 8 would be awesome.

Effort There, Execution Not So Much....Yet
cornbread replied to johnnyzip84's topic in Akron Zips Football
With new coaching staffs comes new opportunities. Guys that weren't even given looks and written off as scout team fodder under the old regime are evaluated the same as everyone else and sometimes those guys show that they deserve a look. That's the thing with new coaching staffs... guys looking for a chance love them, and guys who feel like they already proven themselves and are entitled to something hate them. That seems to be the feeling coming out of some of our "insiders" on this board about some of last year's "leaders" feeling like they're being disrespected. This is not a bad thing. A few wins early in the season will make everything all right. I think the best players will be on the field. It is what iCoach is paid to do. -

Butler has a bulldog, can we get a real kangaroo?

Expenditure-wise, we're probably already pretty close to Butler? On an unrelated side note - I wonder if mid-major coaches are happy that Butler has proven a mid-major can make it to the Finals...or pissed because all mid-major fans are going to hold them to a higher standard? Should mid major fans hold their schools to a higher standard? Yes. Now the only question is, What is the standard? I think the Zips can do better than what they did this season. I hate to define it because there are so many variables that go into a good program, but I'll know it when I see it. What Butler has done is what makes it so difficult to have their success as a mid major. Butler has done everything PERFECT. It's hard to be perfect. If you are Duke, you don't have to be perfect. A mistake here or ther and you still have a thriving program. A couple of mistakes at a mid major and problems can become crushing. There is a old Russian saying: "Perfection is the enemy of just good enough." Are the Zips stuck in a situation where they win 20 games a year, do well in the MAC and get into a post season tournament so few people get overly upset? It isn't until you see perfection that you realized just good enough may not be good enough. People rag on you too much. Very well thought out. + 100 Board Posting Experience points. Sadly, he was a wallaby. Awesome show. It is too bad our mascot can easily be tied to this Hollywood monstrosity. -
I'll buy it. Compelling argument. That would be awesome to see an Akron run like that sometime in March. You sir, are a internet champion

New thing to occupy time until the fall

I can see that. The early votes seem to agree. -
Lets argue over something stupid. Coach I, Ianello, Coachello, I double LL O, The "I before the Team", the Big Lo, Fred, etc I think we can all agree that the Coach Ianello nicknames around here are getting out of hand. Enough so, that we risk alienating the floods of recruits that pour over our well-researched and carefully thought-out message board posts while they research their college choice. It is time for a change. We should agree as a community on one abbreviation. I submit to you, my esteemed colleagues in support of Akron athletics... iCoach
-
I see many people using "Coach I" or something like it to describe Ianello. In order to make it sound as cool as possible for the thousands(millions?) of potential recruits that read these forums, and to keep pace with our rushed, abbreviated culture, as a community, we should adopt a standardized moniker to cut down on the lexicon. I propose... iCoach thoughts?

I am not joking. And I am not necessarily against the idea. You have to have faith that the new coaching staff is doing their best. I think it is a great idea when it comes to motivation to say, "Guess what guys, clean slate. Work hard and show me what you got." Maybe we will see what Brookhart had in mind when he recruited some of these guys. But for players who have worked hard and gained a level of respect among their peers, this is most definitely a head game. I hope it works out and it will drive the more lax players to go hard or get out. We may be seeing a byproduct of it already. It sounds like he is running a tough camp. *Edit* Ok I do hate head games. But I recognize its importance as a motivation tool.

Awful news. I hope JD wasn't the one who ruined him by sitting him so much. The new coaches are not respecting anything that has happened in the past and are playing head games with some of the past starters(not referring to the above). I hated head games and that BS. I hope things turn out well.

I was sold on PN as well last year. He also needs a little better accuracy. I know we don't know what we have right now, but we do know the MAC stinks. We also know one really good QB in the MAC can make or break a team. I think we have that one really good QB. The Great GP1 remains bullish on this football team. I do not think an over .500 season is out of the question. O-Line is experienced at least, while not highly regarded 4-3 will be better against the run Young team

Quick, somebody get Michigan on the schedule.

Florida's 2 National Championships would disagree with you. I love to watch the 3-3-5 blitz packages. You can literally send people from anywhere. We did not execute it. -
I wonder if Martin is saying, "Hey, JD Brookhart stole my Swingline on the way out the door. I'm going after him, just save me some cake."He looks like my three year old when he points at something and says, "Want."

I agree. We should be mean about Can't stuff, not our own recruits. If you want to be mean on the internet, the preferred form is trolling. At least then you are doing something someone, somewhere may find funny.A form of trolling is RickRolling.Leave the kid alone who was given a chance to attend Akron on a scholarship when the other schools backed down. He probably won't make it. But who knows?

Personally, I would love to see his numbers go way down... Hoping for an offense that can reliably put drives together keeping our defense relaxing comfortably on the sideline.

I am in charge of the Kentucky game convoy. I am just hoping we have enough able bodied drivers after we get back from the Alabama game the weekend before we role to Big Blue country. You guys leaving from Akron will be traveling thru the entire state of Ohio. Maybe getting a party bus to make stops along the way is the only logical solution? Rough plan I came up with in 3 minutesset up non-profit biz acct accept donation via Paypal (3% goes to paypal)book party bus with proceeds (http://www.busrates.com/results.php?bustype=1&state=OH&city=Akron/Canton)drink all the way to Kentucky and back

I personally like the idea that coaches are held to the same standards of society. I do not get why the idea that a punishing, morale destroying demeanor is better approach to kids/ young adults than something more even-handed.

It's already a QB/WR game. Have you been watching bowl games?A lot of teams are using their QB as a runner and they get positive yards doing so. These teams usually have one back and a good running QB. That's two RBs.When I dismissed you guys for New Years holiday, I asked all of you to come back with a different paradigm about football. Football has changed. 20 years ago it was hard to find a good passing HS QB....today, high schools QBs are much better at passing and more sophisticated in their understanding of defenses out of more complicated offenses. The days of I-Formation are over for almost every team (except on short yardage). A spread formation with one RB and a QB that can both run and pass is deadly. It gives a good QB many options to throw to. It can eliminate a certain number of players "in the box" which helps the O-Line better evaluate who they are going to block. Fewer defenders in the box also helps the single RB better gain yardage because there are fewer defenders at the line. It neutralizes blitzing because the QB can get the ball out faster to a hot receiver from the shotgun quickly. It can create huge mismatches (ie: LB covering fast RB in a pass pattern) for the QB to exploit. If everyone is covered, the QB can run from the pocket and gain yardage more easily because the defense is spread all over the field.A fullback offers almost zero threat to a defense. It has become such an insignificant position that NFL teams usually only dress one. If that guy gets hurt, they just pick up some other schlub off of the free agent list or the practice team to plough into the line.Going into bowl season, I didn't think Texas had a chance against Alabama after the Big 12 Championship. Nebraska turned out to have a really good team after all. Texas can move the ball and score points. They have a good shot of winning.Tonight, if Iowa can stop the GA Tech option early, they will blow them out with a good passing game. If you can't stop the option early, it only gets worse as the game progresses. Talk about spread offenses, everyone thinks the GA Tech offense is the old style option. It's a spread offense that runs a lot and can exploit a defense when they put too many guys in the box with some passes.Welcome to the 21st Century. How do you explain the redefining of the single wing offense as the Wildcat then? QBs have always run. It is a choice by the coach given the talent level and football philosophy. Think outside the box. Take for example your rant about fullbacks. Why do you use the NFL as a qualifier? It's talent level, rule structure, and field dimensions (narrower hashes leads to more field, where speed is valued) make large bodied backs less useful. Stop getting stuck on definitions. You cannot argue with facts. Large, strong ball carriers are harder to tackle, and when they run into you, it hurts more and they fall forward. Coaches will find uses for matchups like that. Look at Toby Gerhart, Brandon Jacobs, Brian Leonard, Ron Dayne, Dallas Clark, etcStop trying to define the world and just live in it bro... you're harshin the 'sphere

I hope that these hires indicate that UA is finally getting serious about winning on the football field. How many times have we said here that UA needs to finish the job, spend what it takes to bring in the right people and build this program? I really, really like what I hear so far about these hires. Some of these coaches bring name recognition and credibility to the UA campus. That's got to help when it comes to recruiting, and hopefully they'll gel into great X and O guys too.Very exciting so far this offseason.Do you think the offseason would have been more exciting if it was warmer out?Sorry... i had toSERIOUS DAD FACE: I vote with confidence for Okruch.
