Ahhhh, it's not football season until I read the annual posts about how the sky is falling after the first game.
-
Better hurry, I hear 2009 season tickets are going fast!

This is what you hear because you are a soccer fan. You obviously hang out with other soccer fans. Soccer fans probably make up 5% of the university. The soccer program could vanish tomorrow and 95% of the people on campus and NE Ohio for that matter couldn't care less. You and your soccer student friends talk about football being a joke because you are jealous of people not caring about your sport. 95 % of the public talks about how much a joke soccer is regardless of wins and losses. Harsh, but a fact. And this is what you think because you're not on campus. More students showed up for a pre-season scrimmage against VCU than the entire amount of students, alumni, fans, and press that attended football's open scrimmage. More people show up for a D3 high school football game than the NCAA championship soccer game. I don't need to be on campus to know that. I do not find it surprising that students showed up for a soccer scrimmage against another school. I am also not surprised that they didnt go watch the football team practice against themselves. Who wants to watch practice? Believe it or not, tt's true. You walk around the Union at lunch or anywhere on campus during class changes and ALL of the buzz on campus right now is about the soccer team. I'll be at the Syracuse game Saturday, and yeah, there will probably be more students there then at the soccer games. The difference is that 90% of students at football games are just there to be there because their friends told them it will be fun and they'll be gone by halftime. It's like greek night in the JAR. The students who go to the soccer games go and cheer and live and die with the team. Heck, they were turning students away from Lee Jackson at the gate last year because there wasn't enough room.

Tues., Nov. 16 - at Dayton Sat., Nov. 20 - Youngstown State Wed., Nov. 24 - Cleveland State Sun., Dec. 12 - at Temple Wed., Dec. 15 - at Minnesota Thurs., Dec. 23 - vs. Miami (Fla.) I like the in-state games a lot. Especially Cleveland State. Even though Temple is up there and made a bit of noise last year they aren't Pitt or someone else that we have absolutely no chance against. Still too many super cupcakes, but definately an improvement.

I had to sit in at a meeting today as a representative for my student group. Halfway through the day they brought in a guy from athletics who handed out a card and talked about a new rewards system for students attending games. Basically, you go to sporting events, you swipe your card, you get free stuff. Here's what it says on the card: 5 Points - Football, Men's Soccer, Men's Basketball 10 Points - Women's Soccer, Volleyball, Baseball, Women's Basketball, Softball 15 Points (1 designated ROO-Wards event per sport): Cross Country, Men's Golf, Women's Golf, Indoor Track and Field, Rifle, Tennis, Simming, Outdoor Track and Field PRIZES 15 Points - Zips Walk-On Roo-Wards Walk-on Dining Pack (Over $50 in free and discounted food at local restaurants) 40 Points - Zips Rookie Zips Aluminum Water Bottle 70 Points - Blue Zip Choose From: 1. We can only hope.... -
Didn't Colbie Calait and Nora Jones both sell out? Same with Chevelle with Finger 11 and other small acts. The reason they can't bring in bigger names is because they sell out larger venues, so they charge more, which makes places like EJ with 3,000 seats or whatever it is lose money, especially when they can easily play at places like the Wolstein Center or Blossom right up the road. If they're having money issues they need to bring in more acts like that that, stuff that will sell out without breaking the bank. Even the JAR is too small to have a "Big Name" concert. Now the Info on the other hand....

They built a new football stadium for a bottom of the heap MAC team when we couldn't fill up the Rubberbowl halfway, everyone wants a new arena when we can't fill the JAR except for the Can't game. Soccer sells out several home games, wins the regular season every year since 2005, the tournament every year since 05 except 06, loses on pks in the National Championship game and you wonder why they're getting a new stadium?

More like 17th fiddle 1) Pro Football 2) College Football 3) Pro Baseball 4) Pro Basketball 5) College Basketball Tie 6) Pro Hockey Tie 6) College Baseball (it's HUGE in the southeast/south/west) 8) High School Football 9) Womens College Basketball 10) Pro Soccer 11) Pee Wee Football 12) Little League Baseball 13) Arena Football 14) College Softball 15) WNBA 16) Pro Bowling 17) College Soccer I'd actually put College Volleyball ahead of soccer on that list. It's a helluva lot easier to convince a bunch of guys to go watch tall skinny college girls jumping around in spandex than a bunch of queer looking skinny college boys prancing around a field, locks flowing, chasing balls. Have you been to an Akron volleyball game? There are literally like 30 people there...

TCF Bank Stadium is for sure in it this year, they made a big deal about it and have videos up everywhere, but I haven't heard anything about the Info.
-
Saw that the other day. It's pretty horrible compared to most of the others. Of course, I'd rather have theo Info on the game rather than Zippy. Playing in the Rubber Bowl just doesn't have the same effect... Any word on whether it's gonna be on there or not?

Along the same idea... Zips lose MAC title after strange finish

The JAR is tiny steps forward from Memorial Hall. We are not impressed. You never are....i'm sure you wish we had a palace like the MAC Center so we could have our view obstructed a little more. That's so big time. You don't know what you are talking about. I am impressed with InfoCision and more. That I expect UA to act like the big boys they should be seems to piss you off. That remains your problem. No, UA's biggest problem is the same old people who continue to imagine that this school is some crappy commuter school when it's far better than that. You wonder why 9 out of 10 people on ZN.o take offense to the ridiculous things you say? It's because you push that stigma that doesn't exist and are the main reason we have a problem shaking it. Again, sorry Akron doesn't have a "beautiful jewel" in the middle of its campus like the MAC Center where 25% of fans attending miss half the game due to obstructed views. Do you drop acid on a daily or weekly basis? Your come-back is absurd and has nothing to do with anything I have ever said. I'm not impressed with Rhodes Gym. That is all I said. Your compulsion to fill in blanks that are not there is a sign of your crazieness. Nice try...you can twist things around all you want. All people have to do is read the BS you post on here and know who is the one "dropping acid". Come on fellas, really? Both of you claimed you were amazed by the awesome feature which is the ignored users list. Agree to disagree and spare us the bickering...

The kids probably hungry to win, UMBC went 4-26 last year.
-
Wow... You are something else.
-
I voted 6-6. Unrealistically optimistic, just like a true Zips fan.
-
agreed. It was a huge success. I think the idea was to deter kids from partying for mayday, which will never happen but it was a great time nonetheless and should be even better next year. Yeah, the partying may be more now that people didn't go home for the weekend. But yeah it was an awesome time today. The softball games were exciting, the beer garden was a good setup, Red Wanting Blue was fantastic to finish off the night and the fireworks were top notch. Just a great job by the University. I don't get to say it much, but today they outdid themselves. +1

I have a couple dozen friends who ride the Roo Express every day. Some of them live in Quaker Square, some in Buchtel Place, and some in Gallucci Hall. There is no easy way to get from Quaker to anywhere else, especially with the Mill Street bridge out, and no one wants to walk in the areas around Gallucci or Buchtel Place when they get out of their evening classes. I've also known people to take it down to Canal Park for the Aeros games and from some of the farther out parking lots, especially when there's a foot of snow on the ground. I'm not sure you can call it a "marketing ploy" if tons of students use it every day... http://www.uakron.edu/aux/parking/shuttle-routes.php

do they really need another building? I ask this sincerely because I have never heard directly from anyone that there's been that much of a space need. I'm pretty sure every other building they put up is a polymer building. After walking by it today it looks like they're about done with the one behind North Deck. Does anyone know what they're putting in the building diagonal from the Wonder Bread factory?

Is it football season yet?

Impact of UA Sports and Infocision on the City
bandzip replied to MDZip's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
just spent the last couple hours youtube'ing the bluecoats. Im sold. Ill be there. I've been complaining about the lack of concerts at InfoCision Stadium, but I was hoping for something along the lines of Jay-Z, Dave Matthews, not really interested in a marching band... Do yourself a favor then and take a chance on the BlueCoats or some of the other 's that will be there. You'll be pleasantly surprised. Five of the corps coming finished in the top ten last year, and several UA students march with the Bluecoats. Should be a good turnout and a nice showcase for the stadium. They never have the best corps at the show in Canton so I've done roadtrips the last couple of years to get to some of the bigger shows. It's going to be nice to have a good one right down the street. Looking forward to it! -
We were well over 50/50. The side opposite the Akron bench and behind the band was full of people in Akron gear. I was just talking to a couple people about it today. Ohio's fans cheering almost the entire game and everyone was standing, clapping and singing along with the fight song while the only time the Akron fans even bothered to get out of their seats was at halftime and with less than a minute left in regulation. I understand that it's the start of spring break, but Rowdies, wtf? Maybe 100 students for the MAC Championship Game 45 minutes up the road? The OZone put you guys to shame. Figure it out for real. The most frustrating were probably the girls games when there were about 20 Rowdies or so, all sitting down 5 minutes into the game.
