NBC Sports has it as a top college news story: http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2...trator/related/ Over the weekend, a Twitter “report” surfaced that former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel is interested in going back to the collegiate level – at Ohio St. or somewhere else — in an administrative capacity. Based on another report, that could very well come to fruition sooner rather than later. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Tressel has been in discussions with the University of Akron regarding an administrative position with the school. The Plain Dealer states that an announcement of Tressel’s hiring by the NE Ohio school could take place as early as Thursday. In a statement, the university did nothing to shoot down the speculation. In fact, they added more fuel to the speculative fire. “When Jim Tressel and other alumni assisted us in our search for a football coach last December, we began to engage in dynamic conversations about Jim’s professional goals outside of athletics,” the unattributed statement read. “We share a common interest in innovative programs for student success. Our discussions continue.” There was no detail provided as to whether the administrative position would be inside or outside of the Zips athletic department. Tom Wistrcill was hired as Akron’s athletic director in August of 2009, and has been considered to be by and large a success during his brief tenure. Since retiring/resigning/being fired as Ohio State’s head coach last memorial Day weekend, Tressel served as a game-day instant replay advisor for the Indianapolis Colts. He was interviewed — twice — for the NFL club’s head coaching vacancy earlier this year, but lost out on the job to Chuck Pagano. He had also been rumored as a potential head coaching candidate for the Zips before the school hired Terry Bowden. The paper also reported that Tressel was being considered for administrative leadership posts at Baldwin Wallace College and Wittenberg University. BW was wear his father Lee Tressel became an Ohio small college coaching legend. Love the statement I put in bold lol...

We went from talking about hiring a bunch of no-name coaches to possibly having both Terry Bowden and Jim Tressel at UA. Holy shit.

Statement from UA: "When Jim Tressel and other alumni assisted us in our search for a football coach last December, we began to engage in dynamic conversations about Jim's professional goals outside of athletics. We share a common interest in innovative programs for student success. Our discussions continue." NON-athletic position? Interesting...

Imagine a recruit coming to UA's campus. He looks around at our incredible facilities, walks through out beautiful stadium, and then sits down with Terry Bowden and Jim Tressel to discuss football. You've got to like the chances of getting that kid to sign a LOI.

Kenny Roda reported the same on Twitter.

Lebron moving basketball camp from Akron to Vegas

We? It's wayyyy too early to speculate on Irving. I will say that he seems to be the type that would take the lead role for a franchise, not follow someone elsewhere. -

Yeah, I don't get the Akron/Cleveland thing at all. I love both cities and cheer for every Cleveland professional sports team. I'm not sure why people feel the need to create rivalries instead of just wishing both cities the very best. -

Will Zeke will be back?
UAZip0510 replied to MontrealExposloveZippy's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I love Zeke. He is a wonderful basketball player, a class act, and will go down as one of the best Zips of all-time. With that being said: 1) He is not ready for the NBA. He has shown flashes of dominance as a junior, but still hasn't developed the consistency that NBA prospects need to show. With the rest of this year and another full season, he will (hopefully) develop that consistency. 2) Zeke will make it in the NBA, but most likely as a 2nd round pick, and as a backup center...very similar to Ryan Hollins. I will be absolutely stunned if he was a lottery pick...I hope to be stunned though. -
Chase and Domenik Hixon will both get a shot at Super Bowl ring #2!

See, and this is what I love about Keith Dambrot. The Zips players and all of us are feeling on top of the world right now. However, if they don't keep working hard and fail to win the MAC Tournament, this win won't be remembered. Nick Harney has incredible potential, and has a breakout game tonight. But if Nick Harney doesn't keep working hard, this may be the high-point of his career. It's not an excuse for the next loss...it's balance. Dambrot is always looking at the big picture, which players and fans are sometimes unable to do.

Looks like a loss tonight. Time to rebound this Saturday at home and start a new run.

Can't down 17 to OU midway through the 2nd half

I know it's outdoor, but Blossom attracts some pretty big acts.
-
Haha, that's a good one. Oh wait...you're serious...?

Not to hi-jack the thread, but this isn't the case at all. Cavaliers have fans moved on - it's ESPN and other national media outlets that continue to tie him to Cleveland. Having one of the best young point guards in the league makes it pretty easy to move on. I do love the people who continue to live in the dream world that "Bron" actually does anything for our program.

Holy crap, how was non-HD ever acceptable?
-
Yep, I was there. I was alluding to his number being retired this time.

Coming into this season, Sanchez had four playoff wins in two years. Lots of starting NFL QBs stink, he isn't one of them. He plays for a defensive oriented coach who doesn't value offense so he suffers. If the Jets would can their coach and hire someone who was willing to play football in the 21st Century, Sanchez could shine. I believe the Jets won those games, not Sanchez.

Taylor's Farewell Speech to the Dolphins - http://deadspin.com/5872453/ ESPN's "Face of the Program" Feature on Taylor - http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/face/team?teamId=2006 JT finishes his career with 774 tackles and 139.5 sacks (6th all-time). He was a 6-time Pro-Bowler and was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2006. He is widely recognized for his charitable work, winning the 2007 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. While at Akron, he was a four year letterman, three-year starter, and an All-American as a junior. He also lettered for the basketball team. I hope you will all join me in Canton to see JT get inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in a few years. It would be nice to see a large contingent of Blue and Gold there. Hopefully UA has some sort of "Jason Taylor Day" in the near future, either next season or when he gets inducted. I'd also love to see #33 retired.

Keith Dambrot has earned the benefit of the doubt with me. His moves don't always make sense to me at the time that they happen, but I still trust in them until he gives me a reason not to. If Dambrot wanted to, he could be at a BCS program by now. We are extremely lucky to have him as the leader of this program.

VCU at Akron on December 29th, 2011
UAZip0510 replied to Districtballer's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Some random thoughts after cooling down a bit: - The referees were brutal. Zeke took an absolute pounding down low, and the no-call on the Abreu three point attempt toward the end of regulation had a significant impact on the outcome of the game. - With that being said, the Zips had plenty of chances to close VCU out. That is something this team is going to have to learn how to do - finish a team off. Akron outplayed VCU the majority of the game, but never put them away. When you let a team like VCU hang around, you're going to get burned. - This was a gutsy performance from Alex Abreu. He's obviously not back to 100% yet, but he handled the pressure VCU threw at him well. He'll be extremely important in the MAC Tournament. - Nik Cvetinovic has turned the corner. Not only did he play well - 21/7/4 - but I also noticed him talking to Treadwell throughout the game, especially when Tree was getting frustrated. Senior leadership is vital to any team's success, and Nik is finally showing some. I also thought it was smart of him to bring the ball up a few times. The heavy pressure on Abreu and Diggs was causing problems, and Nik took notice that his man couldn't maintain the same heavy pressure on him. I don't want to see that all the time, but for this game, it worked. - Speaking of full court pressure, this team has to figure that out. They gift wrapped quite a few easy baskets for VCU by failing to break the press. They also need to figure out more inbound plays than "throw a lob to Zeke"...it hurt them on more than one occasion. - If I'm not mistaken, this was only the 2nd time all season that the Zips have had their full roster available. Hopefully we'll be able to stay healthy and suspension-free the rest of the way. This team is not only good enough to win the MAC, they're also good enough to make noise in the NCAA's. But to do so, they're going to have to come together and commit themselves to doing what it takes to become champions. They've already gone through a lot as a team - let's see if they can overcome it in the end. -
Agreed on that. It would be fitting if the Zips retired his number and brought him in for a ceremony.

While the Zips have struggled with suspensions, injuries, and learning to play together, the Ohio Bobcats have been on quite a roll. They are currently 11-1, with their own loss being a 5 point defeat at Louisville. They are currently 21st in the nation in RPI and received 20 votes in the most recent AP Poll. They have defeated us in our last three matchups: by 6 in the 2010 MAC Championship and both times last year - by 9 at the JAR, then by 25 at OU. DJ Cooper averaged 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 10 assists in the three games - close to a triple double. He just so happens to play point guard, a position with a ton of question marks for the Zips due to Abreu's health and Ibitayo's inexperience. I know the Zips will get better and I'm confident in our team defeating anyone in the MAC, but will OU be our biggest challenge this year?

Over the last four games: 28 MPG, .552 FG%, .708 FT%, 15 PPG, 8 RPG, 3 BPG, 1 PFG He's scoring and rebounding more while fouling less. Hopefully he has made improvements and this isn't just due to a large helping of "cupcakes"...
