Marked one off my list tonight. As a fan of brown ale and Anchor Brewing, I was excited to try their Brekle's Brown. I first heard about it about 9 months ago but never saw it available anywhere so I figured it wasn't going to be distributed this far east. On my way home from work I stopped to get groceries and there it was! I eagerly poured a glass as soon as I got home, sure that I was in for a real treat. This is the worst brown I have ever tasted. God-awful. It's sour. Sour like it's got a shot of grapefruit in it. Avoid at all costs! Drain pour.

One thing I am really looking forward to NOT seeing this year is the QB coming to the line and pointing at the middle linebacker EVERY SINGLE SNAP. That alone will make this year better than last. I am also really curious to see just how crazy Coach Amato's blitz packages will be. One of the reasons our db's looked so terrible last year was the complete lack of a pass rush. The other reason they looked so terrible is because they were, but pressure on the QB will help immensely. Amato knows that and he has been given a long leash. I pretty sure Ianello had the same conservative philosophy on defense as he did on offense and made sure the D played likewise. I would give a nickle to hear what the assistants under Rob truly think about him.

It can get worse, record-wise. The Zips could go 0-12. I don't believe that will happen and even if a rash of injuries kept us winless, it wouldn't be as bad as last year because the Zips don't have a blithering idiot at the helm. I believe the Zips will probably win 3 or 4 games this year. Even if every other factor involved was exactly the same as last year, I think the coaching change is worth 2-3 wins itself. I think we are going to keep liking Coach Bowden more and more as we proceed. We are extremely lucky to have a coach of his caliber. His personality and media savvy is in the very top fraction of all the coaches in football today.

SB Nation Zips Preview

I thought Nicely looked good at BG as well, even though the Zips lost. At that point I thought the future looked bright for the QB situation. I had heard the knock on Nicely with the RI staff was his lack of leadership and that by the end of 2010, PN7 had lost the team's support. I don't know how true that is, but it did seem like the offense put out a better effort with LR8 at the controls, at least through the CMU game. Like I say, I don't know any more about the "bad attitude" than what I learned in a one time conversation with the father of a player during halftime of the Ohio game. I always wondered, if true, if the alleged attitude problem coincided with the Ianello regime coming in. At any rate, it is a shame to see a kid never reach his potential, even though it happens a lot.

I went to Fat Head's Brewery in North Olmstead on Friday. What a great place. I had the fish & chips for my lunch. Very tasty and pretty good sized portion. The beer was great too. I tried their Bumbleberry Honey Blueberry Ale. I don't really get into many fruit beers, but his one was pretty good. Nothing special here but not bad. I keep hoping I will find a berry beer as good as Abita Purple Haze but it hasn't happened yet. Sorcerer was labeled as a Dark Belgian. To me it tasted like a Winter Warmer. Kind of sweet with a big alcoholic punch at 9%. The Pillage Porter was a little disappointing. Not bad, but I have had many porters much better than this one. The capper of the day was the "Bean Me Up" Koffee Stout. So creamy. So silky. Such delicious coffee goodness. Wow. The bar was really cool, too. Laid out nicely with the brewery visible. They had 20 other breweries beers on tap in addition to their 11. Just a really fun place. I would choose it over Great Lakes every time.

How many of the kind of guys we are looking for become available at this stage of the game? Haven't most of these type of players already been secured by other teams? Also, how many scholarships do we have to give? I realize we are 20 schollys short, but you can only give 25 a year and I think we signed 21. Doesn't that mean only 4 more slots are even available? Am I thinking right?

I would be interested to know who got the sacks.

This article is very complimentary of Kyle Pohl. I don't know a lot about Kyle other than he had a decent performance in the 2011 North-South game, (The same game Tyler Williams was MVP in) whatever that is worth. One thing I liked seeing last year is that he was totally engaged in the games, shadowing Ianello with his clipboard, obviously trying to be as big a part of the offense as he could in his first season. His bio is impressive in addition to his football accolades: 4.0 student, scored 1000 in h.s. basketball career. This is going to get really interesting.

You think KD's viewpoint would influence Coach Bowden? I mean, it's not like he's a media novice.

"Zips Football with Terry Bowden" would be a great program. It needs to be broadcast in HD and hosted by someone not named Joe Dunn.
