I've given up on a dream of a new arena. Just doesn't look like that's happening. Hopefully UA can do enough to keep Kest happy and keep her with the Zips. Maybe it's just me but I feel the women's basketball is definitely gaining popularity. We won't ever have a program like Notre Dame, UConn, or Baylor but their games are actually fairly entertaining. I will also say that having girls like Skylar Diggins doesn't hurt either.

lol I would be happy to see 2 wins!

Exactly and we've seen that it's very possible for any team to get into a BCS game. So this throws the "play in the spring" logic out the window. I have no problem with trying to get exposure playing on a Wednesday, Thursday, or even Friday night. But separating ourselves from the highest level of college football would be pointless. People call me negative, but I have hope that brighter days are ahead for our football and basketball programs. Moving down and giving up should not be an option.

Please, please get drafted by the Cavs. My biggest fear is he gets picked by the Heat, but both scenarios seem very unlikely.

Nevermind.

LeBron James donating $1 million to to renovate gym
akzipper replied to Hilltopper's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Here's the thing. Lebron went to St.V's and I have no problem with how much money he gives them compared to UA. In reality his only connection to us is that he is from Akron and has close relationships with coaches/players. He knows, like the rest of the country, that UA is not Duke, Kentucky, or OSU. But he does give the Zips credit when they have positive accomplishments. Anytime a small school like UA is mentioned by Lebron it gives us exposure and in return gives the program a bump in credibility. I really don't mind if he doesn't directly bring in recruits. But it's his involvement in the Akron community that I support. -
We'll he's from Florida, so I'd assume he'd want to stay at a bigger school down south. If he's graduated does that mean he gets to play immediately? regardless of how many years it actually took.

Clint Trickett is probably the skinniest QB I have ever seen in college football. Would have to say he has the build of most kickers. I think it would be tough to get a 5th-year transfer. Most likely if they are leaving their current school, they are looking for a starting position. The impression I get is that Bowden wants someone to push Pohl not take his position.
-
I'm very glad he got picked up. My only question is, was his success a result of talent or the system? Very often spread quarterbacks are able to put up big numbers due to the system. A good example would be Brandon Weeden. Put up big numbers at OkState but nothing in the NFL.

All I remember from last years spring game was Clayton Moore's long run. Seemed like our offense didn't seem very impressive then, but when it came time for real games they had improved. Hopefully the same can happen this season. I'm not worried about the offense, since this team's success will all ride on how well the defense plays.
-
So I take it they aren't streaming video online of the spring game? Probably a smart move trying to get people down to the stadium to watch.

He was the biggest coaching name available. He had already turned down the Suns and just about every other team with a vacancy was interested.
-
Mike Brown is headed back to the Cavs. They didn't really have a big search, but I doubt KD would have been considered. Gilbert has always been a "big splash" kind of guy and couldn't see him taking a coach out of the MAC. If anything at least it will end the Lebron Cleveland return conversation.
-
I can't imagine the offense is much different than last year. It was our strong point and the fact that the defense seems to be outplaying them should be a positive. If anything it will force the offense to get better. The one thing that does worry me is the concerns about the O-line. It doesn't matter how good the rest of your offense/gameplan is, if they have no time nothing is going to happen.

I really do want to get excited for this season. So much of what we have heard is positive. But, I can't help but remember the optimism surrounding last season and how that turned out. After all this is only spring practice and we're watching Zips vs. Zips. Just too tough to judge right now.

The worst part is...in 4 years this is the only concert to be at the stadium. No I don't count marching bands.
-
So campuses are not allowed to expand? UA once took up only few blocks around Buchtel Hall. How is expanding to the east any different than expanding to the south? I guess unless it is built right next to Buchtel Hall it's not considered part of campus.
-
So Canal Park is just as far away as the Rubber Bowl? You just said that a 5 minute walk and 15 minute drive are the same thing. If people can't cross a street to watch a game, they're better off staying home. Unless maybe the walk to their living room is too far...
-
Any location around campus is going to result in the same amount of fans. Yes, even an arena by Canal Park. Might be tough to hear but that location is the same distance from a majority of students as the JAR. People need to stop acting like Canal Park is next to Akron Fulton Airport. Yes, if I had to pick I would like it next to InfoCision. Having all of our athletic facilities centralized in one location would be great. An awesome view of Infocision and brand new arena sitting side by side would be impressive. But it's not up to us. Either way fans are going to show up to watch the team. Whatever gets the arena built fastest and with the most money is the best option. It needs to get done, and fast. If they wait too long KD will have no choice but to move on and basketball will fall back into mediocrity.
-
Well KD has coached 4 schools so far, 5 if you include St.V's. He's only a few years older than Alford and also signed a 10-year extension. Anything can happen. Nobody thought Porter would leave...
-
Well I'll just say anything could happen. Steve Alford just got hired at UCLA. He recently signed a similar 10-year extension and very little success in his 3 NCAA tournament appearances. Sound familiar? KD is on record saying he'll stay as long as UA is committed to putting money into the program. Are they? We are the best team in the MAC and don't even have a decent building to play in. As a fan it is beyond frustrating, and I can't even imagine how KD feels.

Seems like it was about the past season, not really the future.

No reason to fill a section with seats, when students should be standing anyway. Bleachers are fine.

Transfer DL from Florida State
akzipper replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I feel like a lot of time these types of transfers get overrated. I hear a name like Florida State, Michigan State, Ole Miss, etc and think we're getting the next Cam Newton. Even in basketball with Forsythe I expected more, just because of the WVU connection. Unfortunately 9 times out of 10 they really don't make an impact. Luke Getsy is the only one I can think of that really had success. -
Success in the tournament is based on who you draw. Like most have said VCU was probably the worst team to face. I felt that any top mid-major would be tough (VCU, Butler, St Louis, etc) because they are used to playing teams like Akron all year, while big schools are more prone to being upset. I felt that this year's team was the best one we've ever sent to the tournament. I'd say they would have had a good chance to beat the Gonzaga or ND teams faced in the past. OhioU has been very lucky with who they drew. Georgetown, USF, and Michigan are all beatable teams. If we make the tournament enough, eventually we will get favorable matchups that allow us to advance. Let's just hope the "every other year" trend doesn't continue. We need to consistently make the postseason and consistently get better recruits.
