Class of '24 Recruits & Verbal Commitments
LZIp replied to Blue & Gold's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
I have us with 2-3 open schollies (depending on if a PK is put on scholly) based on the information that has been made publicly available. I have to think a QB and RB are top priorities to ensure appropriate depth. At QB, you have Finley, a gadget QB, and then a true freshman. We had 5 scholarship QBs last year for what its worth. At RB, I think Simmons is the starter right now with Kellom #2 getting a fair share of carries. After that, Marquese Williams and Sean Patrick are both young and small. I would not count on either of them getting a heavy workload if Simmons or Kellom were to get banged up. -

But also 4 yrs of eligibility left where we only had Shocky for 1 yr. -
Oh wtf. The turnover never ends

Awesome for Enrique. How many guys get invited to the combine? Might give us an idea of his draft chances. cant imagine many who aren’t there get drafted.

Announcing you are entering the TP and then committing in the same tweet is a look. Have to think he entered earlier, it just wasn’t known.
-
Way to hard to figure out where he was committing on that tweet.

The transfer portal OL market is literally crazy. We’ve had guys transfer to Liberty, Auburn, and ECU. Probably missing others, but I thought they all could easily be replaced.

As is the case for nearly all walk ons. -

@catdaddyp, have to think the staff will look to bring in another QB with Wasel transferring out, right? Finley appears adequate. Behind him you'd have Bullock who in my mind is a gadget QB, and then a true freshman in Raggow. With our meat grinder schedule to start the season, have to have some insurance there. -
Kids want paid to play and want to transfer whenever they want, so decision makers at programs are treating it more like a business.

Blake seems like a good locker room presence. I know he was put in scholarship at one point, but no idea if that was just for one season or carried over. Neither him or Wasel appear to be big losses for this season, but I’m much more comfortable with Hester transferring considering he’s 3rd or 4th on the depth chart in his 4th or 5th year of college. Whereas Wasel is just going into his redshirt freshman season. Still had a lot of time to develop.

Wasel in portal per 247. Bummer.

My blind guess: Fulford to WVU. -
Seems like he'd be a really good get. Don't think he crossed paths with Joe Mo at Miss St, but definitely would have familiarity with Finley. Also, today is the last date of the current transfer portal window. I would be surprised if we didn't have more players enter..

One guy get signed as an UDFA and one guy getting a tryout. When is the last time we had any player get a chance at the next level? Feels like it’s been way too long.
-
Awesome. I recall Lingard talking pretty highly of his experience at Akron later last season. Testament that it’s better to transfer to a school like Akron to show your capabilities rather than rot away on the bench at P5.

My takeaways (and I’ll add that in my opinion it’s hard to take much from this with so many players rotating in and out): -seems like starting OL was James, Lyons, Williams, Davis, and Blanchard. Did not notice Shor in, but may have missed it. Same with Seymore. - like others have said, Finley seems like he’ll be the starter. Didn’t see anything in terms of bad decisions, and seemed to throw a good, accurate ball. Doesn’t look like Bullock has improved a whole lot. - I see Simmons and Kellom getting bulk of the carries with Williams a more distant #3. -saw some young guys looking like they’re more ready to contribute this year. James as mentioned, also Catrell White and Jean Louis look like they can play. Laing-Taylor had a nice int as others have said and I thought he had a nice hit on Paul Davis as well. - players I noticed not dressed included Phaizon Wilson, Alex Adams, Jarvis Rush, Iesa Jarmon, Kabbash Richards looking forward to reading other takeaways.
-
Looks like Bowen Hartman from OSU has committed to us. Didn’t play much, but shot 44% from 3 last season.
-
Can't wait to the MAC Football Championship to be here as well once the Browns build a dome
-
I'm sure just an oversight since we don't pay as close attention to walk ons as we do scholarship players..
-
Sounds like the crap Arth did. Lame. Give the fans something to be excited about.
-
Isn't that what Wilson is supposed to be? Over his last 2 seasons, has shot better from 3 than Gohlke.
-
Agreed. We feel very thin/unproven at the 5 and to an extent the 4. We must be planning to play a lot of small ball. I guess the staff could have really high expectations for Brisco. He was pretty well recruited as well.
-
A bit bummed to see Baker enter the portal. I thought he looked the part physically, on paper, and in the limited time he played in the Bahamas or wherever it was last year.
-
I hope not. Killer guards are what wins games in the tourney, and while he hasn’t put it all together consistently, the potential has flashed and is there. LCJ didn’t really take off until his 4th year of college. Same for Castenada.
