  3. Here is the latest on Adams from Akron.scout.comAkron Buchtel’s Johnny Adams has quietly collected 8 scholarship offers, including the likes of West Virginia, Pitt and Michigan State. He recently completed an impressive camp tour. Is “Mr. Excitement” still on the Ohio State radar? Bill Greene has more on this fine prospect. Akron Buchtel star athlete Johnny Adams is known as “Mr. Excitement” in recruiting circles. Adams holds 8 scholarship offers, with the most recent being Indiana, Purdue and Marshall. He had previously been offered by West Virginia, Pitt, Michigan State, Syracuse and Akron. Adams is pleased with how recruiting has gone so far. “It’s going real good,” Adams said of his recruiting. “Indiana and Purdue are the latest to offer. I don’t know much about either school really. Both schools said they saw me at the Elite Skills camp in Cleveland and liked what I did that day. Marshall is another fairly new offer.” Adams said he has no favorite school at this time and is considering all schools even. He hopes to be able to take a few visits this fall and get to know the coaching staffs a lot better. “I definitely don’t have a favorite right now,” he insisted. “My mom and I will be going to see some schools this fall and that will help me be able to make the right decision. I could see myself going to all of the schools that have offered me so far. I’ve even given some thought to staying home and going to Akron. Coach Reno Ferri is recruiting me and we’re real tight. I love the whole staff at Akron and think they’re a program on the rise. What they need is for a few local guys to go there and start helping recruit the area. I’m wide open to hearing what any college has to say. If they’re interested in me, then I’m interested in them. I’m in no hurry to make a decision. It could happen before the season but it probably won’t happen then. I’m in summer school and I want to graduate early, so I won’t be going to any camps the rest of the summer.” Adams has had several impressive camp showings and has enjoyed being able to compete against other top athletes. “I love going up against the best and seeing how I measure up,” Adams exclaimed. “I loved being able to work out in front of 100 college coaches in Cleveland. That was really cool. They all said I did real well. Every school that’s offered me is recruiting me as an athlete. Most say that I could end up playing on both sides of the ball. At the Scout.com camp in Pittsburgh I thought I did real well also as a defensive back. I haven’t done a lot of individual testing but I did run a 4.35 forty-yard dash at the Akron City camp. I think I had a real good performance at the Ohio State camp too.” Speaking of Ohio State, Adams says he’s hoping for an offer from Jim Tressel and the Buckeyes. He remains in contact with the staff but isn’t sure where things stand at this moment.“I had a great day at the Ohio State camp,” Adams said. “I really don’t know what’s going on with them though. After the camp I talked with coach [Paul] Haynes and he said he liked what I did. We sat down one-on-one and had a great talk. I also spoke with Jim Tressel after camp ended. They both said my footwork and my ball skills were real good. Coach Tressel said he was impressed. I don’t know what the holdup would be. When coach Tressel and coach [Jim] Bollman came to my track meet this spring I thought they were going to offer then. They’ve stayed in contact with me all along. They text message me all the time and they called me once. I’m waiting for an offer. They were happy that I got a 22 on the ACT. I think they know what they’re looking for and I think they are done evaluating me. The next time we talk I’m going to ask them where I stand.”
  4. Getting Larry would be huge. This would kick down the door that Brian Williams opened in Feb on signing day. The Zips need to land the top local talent. And it might help to land Johnny Adams.
  5. Glad to Hear. Thanks Capn' for the 411.This topic in now closed.
  6. My sources are telling me Aaris Reed may not be with the team. Either grade issue or something else. Has anyone heard anything?
  7. I do not understand all the negativity surrounding the new stadium. There are certain features and designs I would like to see but most of all I am just happy with a new stadium. Just to be able to drive to campus and see the top of the stadium and rec center as the sky line will be awesome. If you go back in time you will find most great stadium did not start out looking like the do today. They started out small and then were added on too and upgraded. I am just hoping for a nice unique looking stadium with more brick than steel visible. I do have a question for all the people demanding the stadium fit a certain model. How much money have you sent in to help the funding? And if you are asking yourself well they have not asked the public for money yet. Then ask yourself how much I will send in when they do. Being a season ticket holder does not count. I will be honest I have not sent in a dime yet and really do not have the income to send in hundreds of dollars but I will send some amount on an ongoing yearly basis.
  8. Let's not judge this young man charactor to quick. He is coming to Akron with a fresh start. If we ever see the University's name with his on the front of the Beacon then we can start to talk. But I don't think we will have to worry.
  9. Former Latrobe star Simkovich 'OK' after shooting accidentBy Bill Beckner Jr.VALLEY NEWS DISPATCHThursday, June 21, 2007 Former Latrobe standout Paul Simkovich says he will make a complete recovery after he was accidentally shot in the shoulder while skeet shooting two hours before his high school graduation. "I'll be OK," Simkovich said. "I'm going to get the stitches out Friday, and I'll be running in two weeks." Simkovich, a 6-foot-4, 310 pound tackle, is headed to Akron on a football scholarship. He says he will be ready for the start of training camp. Simkovich said he was shooting skeet in Fairfield Township with his father and a friend when the accident occurred June 1. "I asked my friend for some shells, and he picked them up and dropped one," Simkovich said. "He tripped and caught the trigger of the gun. It was a complete accident. "It didn't hurt, actually, until they cut my shirt away." The wound required 20 stitches, and Simkovich was unable to attend graduation that night. He received his diploma three days later in a special ceremony with members of the Latrobe boys volleyball team, who were in State College for the PIAA tournament. Simkovich won't play in the Foothills Football Classic all-star game Saturday at Norwin High School, but he plans to be on the sideline with his teammates. "He called me and said he couldn't make the game," said Valley's Troy Hill, who's coaching the all-star game's North team. "You never want to see something like that happen. We still want him at the game. We'll have a spot for him. "It's a big loss for us." The North team already was short on players when Hill found out about Simkovich. Three players from Plum pulled out for personal reasons. In addition, Hill said, Greensburg Central Catholic players were moved to the South roster. "It's sort of an unfair advantage by the numbers," Hill said. "But we'll do what we can." 11. This is from an Iowa messageboard:Re: No word yet where Bain will end up? nm Reply --------------------------------------------------------------------------------FWIW, Bain decided on Akron. He'll be there for summer camp in a few weeks.Posted on 6/1 10:15 PM | IP: LoggedSource with whole thread
  12. I heard a rumor from an unnamed source that Ryan Bain a transfer from Iowa was coming to Akron. He will have 2 years left after sitting out this coming season. He could fill a huge whole on the D-Line if this is true.I did read that he asked for and got his release from the Hawkeyes.
  13. To run the 3-4 you need more than just four good LB's. It all starts up front with the DT. You must have at least one if not two very good players for this position. If the DT can not hold the line, take on a double team and be a run stopper the other team will run wild on you. You also need two very good CB's who can handle man coverage and 'play on an island' so to speak. Plus you need an effective pass rush that can get to the QB qucikly. Regardless of how good your CB's are they can only cover the WR for so long.I am not claiming to be an expert on the 3-4 but I have been watching the Steelers run it for the last 20 years. And if you go back and look at there defensive ratings you can see the years they were bad the DT or the CB's had bad years........
  14. I was listening to rivals radio on sirius and they were talking to the father of Zach Frazer . Zach will be a redshirt freshman at Notre Dame next year. He was told this week that he has zero chance to start at QB next year and is possible looking to transfer. Akron is one of the schools his father mention because they showed interest when he came out of high school. Do the Zips listen to this kid if he calls? Do you want to add another QB to the mix? Zach will be looking to go some where that he can play for three years. Can you turn down a 4 star QB that wants to play for your school?
  15. It will be hard to run the West Virginia offense with only a couple of WR's.Maybe they should try the wishbone with the stable of running backs and more mobile QB's.
  16. Please stop the personal slams on David Harvey. It is not fair to attack a young man just becasue you are pissed he is not playing football. Nobody knows what is going on with him to be making judgements. If this continues this thread will be closed and the users will be warned.ThanksZFF
  17. I really think have time to sit out next year was the difference. He sat all last year as a football Bearcat. He still could end up as a Zip. K-State could find a better player to replace by next year.So what happens with the scholarship now???
  18. Here is his choice:Kansas JC is next stop for Beaver Falls' JeterEx-Beaver Falls star returns to basketballTuesday, May 15, 2007By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-GazetteLance Jeter, a former two-sport standout at Beaver Falls High School, will restart his basketball career at a junior college with the hope of playing in the future at Kansas State.Jeter said yesterday he will attend Hutchinson Community College (Kan.) in the fall and play basketball at the two-year school. Jeter recently left the University of Cincinnati, where he was on a football scholarship. He was redshirted last season. After leaving Cincinnati, Jeter came close to accepting a basketball scholarship to Akron. But Kansas State assistant coach Brad Underwood called Jeter recently, and Kansas State urged the 6-foot-3 guard to attend Hutchinson for a year. Jeter visited Hutchinson this past weekend."Kansas State said they will be watching me, coming to my games to see how I look," Jeter said. "If I get in basketball shape, I think they'll be impressed with my abilities."Jeter would have had to sit out a year if he attended Akron. At Hutchinson, he will play this season."It was hard for me sitting out at Cincinnati, just because I was so used to playing," Jeter said. "I started thinking about if I wanted to sit out another year. I decided not to if I'm going to go back to basketball."
  19. What a Pro BCS School Dick!!!!!What about Ken Dorsey Braylon? He play for Miami and only lost one game as a starter. Does he have any growing to do?Should he be the starter?????Just because you played at a Big School and play in a good football system does not mean you will be a good pro. Hey Braylon did Quinn get pro experience from playing all of those shit teams ND has on their schedule????
  20. You have to walk before you can start to run. Last year when they tried the Big School idea with the parking everybody was up in arms. Now you want them to charge $100 plus the price of the season ticket.......
  21. Sorry but the Browns are not going to trade next years draft away for a guy to sit the bench this coming season. Hopefully Charlie can find a job some place else. This is a blessing. I know Chalrie wanted to play for the home team. But when the home team sucks it is better if you don't play for them. It is all good now and the Browns are going to the Superbowl in two years but check back and two years and see who is in the basement of the AFC Central. Da Browns!!!!!! Quinn is not the answer I for see the next Rick Meier (sp) in the making.......Who does he play for now??????
  22. Here is a link to a nice stroy about Davon Moore.Davon Moore Story
  23. Here is the other name:Former Pickering Trojan/Toronto Thunder DE Hassan Hazime who played with Cegep Vanier this past fall has become the second member of Vanier to commit to a Division 1 school for 2007Hassan an extremely quick and athletic pass rusher has committed to the University of Akron Zips
  24. I was at home for the game and listened to the whole thing. He was very defensive about the schedule and blamed them (wether is be the NCAA or the MAC) for the handful of home games. He also stated that the Indiana game of moved because of all of the problems the conference had with scheduling. He also was very quiet about the new stadium. French finally asked about it and he dance around and around and really never gave a striaght answer. This scares the hell out me. Hopefully this is not a bad sign........
  25. 04/12/2007 Jeter leaves Cincinnati By: Mike Bires, Times Sports BEAVER FALLS - Even though Lance Jeter received a major-college football scholarship, basketball always remained his favorite sport.Advertisement It's that desire to play hoops again that led to his decision to leave the University of Cincinnati, where, until a few days ago, he took part in spring drills as a redshirt freshman wide receiver.Jeter, the former Beaver Falls High School star who led the Tigers to WPIAL and PIAA Class AA basketball championships in 2005, confirmed Thursday that he has left Cincinnati."Right now, it's basketball," Jeter said when asked what sport he hopes to play next at the college level.Upon graduating from Beaver Falls last June, Jeter left behind a legacy of accomplishments that places him among the most storied high school athletes in Beaver County history. As a senior, Jeter was one of the top wide receivers in the WPIAL with 48 catches and 793 receiving yards. He even tried his hand at baseball for the first time, winning the starting job at shortstop and hitting over .300.But it was on the basketball court where Jeter truly shined.A 6-foot-3 guard, Jeter started four years, averaged 20.2 points per game as a senior and finished his career with 2,243 points (that's the 13th-highest total in WPIAL history).Only two other Beaver County players have ever scored more points than Jeter - Brandon Fuss-Cheatham, a 2001 Blackhawk graduate with 2,278 points; and Dante Calabria, a 1992 Blackhawk grad with 2,252 points.Jeter's finest moment came in the '05 WPIAL final - considered by many as the greatest game in WPIAL history - when he scored 37 points in a 79-78 triple-overtime thriller against arch-rival Aliquippa. Jeter hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game in OT and then another three to win it as time expired in the third extra session.During Jeter's four years with Beaver Falls, the Tigers compiled a 102-19 record in basketball.Jeter said Thursday that even though Cincinnati had a coaching change after the 2006 football season - Mark Dantonio left to become head coach at Michigan State - that change wasn't a major factor in his decision to leave Cincinnati."That played a little part in my decision, but not much," he said."Football was OK," Jeter added. "It had its ups and downs. But I do really miss playing basketball."As far as where he might end up in the 2007-08 school year, Jeter said it's too early to tell even though there are rumors that he'll wind up on the basketball team at NCAA Division I Akron. If Jeter transfers to an NCAA Division I program, he would have to sit out the basketball season due to the transfer rule. That would mean he would only have three years of eligibility. But if he transfers to an NCAA Division II program such as Slippery Rock or Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he could be eligible next season."I've got a couple options in mind," Jeter said.Charlie Molnar, Cincinnati's wide receivers coach, said Thursday that he's discussed Jeter's future in recent weeks with him. But Molnar refused to talk specifics about Jeter's decision to leave the Bearcats' football program."All I can tell you is that he's a great kid who tried his hardest to become the best player he could be," Molnar said. "He's not leaving because he did anything wrong here. He's just leaving because, in my opinion, he wants to play basketball again. We wish him luck and nothing but the best."Mike Bires can be reached online at mbires@timesonline.com. Jeter going to be a Zip?
