https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/article/?categoryId=21&articleId=53982&articleTitle=best-of-mens-college-soccer-week-ten Player to Watch: Emil Jaaskelainen, Akron He is far from a secret, but what Jaaskelainen is doing this season deserves an isolated look. The graduate senior leads the country with 20 goals, six more than anyone else. Add the seven assists, and Jaaskelainen leads with 47 points, 14 more than the closest competitor. The British forward has been the best striker in college soccer while also peaking at the perfect time, with 17 of those goals coming in the last nine matches for the Big East regular season champions. Identified as a preseason transfer to watch, adding the two-time NEC Player of the Year from Long Island has clearly been a success for the Akron Zips. It must be the tips he learned from his father, Jussi Jaaskelainen, an English Premier League goalkeeping legend who played more than 800 matches.

Zips were number 24 in coaches poll last week they rocket this week up to number 13 https://unitedsoccercoaches.org/rankings/college-rankings/ncaa-di-men/

Below are the current records of the 7 Big East Teams that the Zips have played Butler 4-9-3 Xavier 4-7-5 DePaul 5-7-3 Marquette 6-6-4 Creighton 8-5-3 Villanova 1-9-5 Georgetown 8-3-5

really nice run up the field by Ashton Kamdem on this goal beautiful unselfish pass by Dyson Clapier.... I think that Dyson leads the zips in assists with 8.... so glad that Dyson and Malik returned to school

the most important thing.....is no yellow cards for dissent. This group currently has a ton of momentum. I would have the guys start but I would probably get them some rest in the first half. Also pull them in the 2nd half if there is a 2 goal difference in the score. Finishing 8-0-0 in the regular season....should definitely impress the NCAA soccer committee.

as of 11:15 pm, the zips were #24 in RPI...so Akron dropped a little bit from Wed. night RPI of #21 Marquette is currently #113 in RPI.....so they did not help the Zips strength of schedule UConn must not have played a tough non conference schedule UConn is currently #76 in RPI

Seton Hall defeated Xavier 1-0 Xavier would need a miracle to get into the tourney current standings Akron 21 2. Georgetown 16 3T. Providence 14 3T. St. Johns 14 5. UConn 11 6T. Creighton 10 6T. Seton Hall 10 8th. Marquette 8 current also rans DePaul and Xavier have 5 points...... Butler at 3 and Villanova at 1...have been eliminated all 6 games next saturday start at 2 eastern Georgetown at st. Johns Xavier at Providence Villanova at Seton Hall DePaul at Butler Creighton at Marquette Akron at UConn if Creighton and Marquette, Marquette would finish as the 8 seed and play at Akron on November 9 I would expect Seton Hall to beat Villanova If Marquette were to beat Creighton next Saturday (and Seton Hall wins or ties), Creighton would drop to 8 seed and come to Akron on the 9th I will let someone smarter than me.....figure out what happens if Marquette, DePaul and Xavier tie for 8th with 8 points I hope that Georgetown wins or ties next Saturday....I would like them to be the 2 or 3 seed and be on the opposite side of the draw from the zips

really nice work by Malik to get free....to make a great pass for the assist on Emil's goal. Malik has really worked hard and has improved a great deal during his time at Akron.

Saturday afternoon games Providence 1 Villanova 0 Providence moves up to 14 points with a 4-1-2 record Providence finishes their year on Nov. 2 with a home game against Xavier Villanova drops to 0-6-1...and is eliminated from being one of the final 8 UConn and St. Johns played to a 1-1 tie UConn now has 11 points...with a record of 3-2-2 St. John's now has 14 points with a record of 4-1-2 St. Johns can now only possibly reach 17 points.....so they can not beat Akron (already 18 points) for the #1 seed in the conference tournament Georgetown mauled DePaul 4-0 DePaul has 5 points with a record of 1-4-2...their Big East tournament hopes are on life support DePaul's last game is at Butler Georgetown moves into sole possession of first place in the East Division with a 5-1-1 record (16 points) if they win their last regular season game (not an easy game....Saturday Nov. 2nd at St. Johns), they would finish with 19 points Georgetown is the only team....that has a very, very long shot of being the top seed in the conference tournament (Georgetown would need to win its last game and have Akron lose its last 2 games). That is not going to happen...as the Zips will win tonight against Marquette. Akron has 18 points after playing only 6 games. A win tonight at Marquette would give Akron 21 points and would give them the top seed in the conference tournament. in the 4 pm conference game, Creighton currently leads Butler 3-1 ...19 minutes left in the game A win would push Creighton to 10 points with a 3-3-1 record Creighton plays at Marquette next Saturday A Creighton win today and next week...would probably bump them up to a 6 seed in the conference tourney

game was at Marquette - 2013 round of 32 - NCAA tournament game real temp was somewhere in the neighborhood of -5 to -10.... I was at the game.... wind chill was probably closer to -25 to -35 field was almost frozen solid Jake Fenlason was great at stopping shots...but did not have a strong leg against the wind, his goal kicks did not reach midfield Marquette had a 6'8 centerback......they used that guy for long kicks due to the leg of the 6'8 centerback....the ball was mostly played with Akron defending their goal Akron freshman midfielder(sometimes known as VS8) let the ref know all game that Marquette was getting the advantage on calls... game was 0-0 after regulation.... in OT, Reinaldo Brenes was taken down in the box....No PK was called VS8 let the ref know(as the action was continuing) that was BS Marquette won 1-0 on golden goal.... after the game, the rather feisty zip midfielder gave the ref an earful.....with some physical contact. feisty midfielder was rewarded with a multi-game suspension at the beginning of 2014 season and a 2 game suspension from NCAA tourney games in 2014.... and yes, I thought that a PK should have been called when Reinaldo went down in the box did I mention that it was COLD !!!!

NYCZIP has a good post under woman's soccer......about the 28 player roster limit ...starting next year. I know that men's soccer will also be be impacted by the roster limits and the change in scholarship limits. I did not know much about the subject. I knew in the back of my mind that the current scholarship limit would increase substantially from the current 9.9 limit. I have attached a link from NCSA. https://www.ncsasports.org/mens-soccer/scholarships#:~:text=D1 men's soccer programs will, and full scholarships to recruits. The info below in bold is a key part of the article. There are charts and much more detailed info in the link above. These changes would impact men’s soccer recruits and college Div. 1 men's soccer teams in the following ways: D1 men’s soccer programs will be allowed to offer 28 scholarships, up from the current limit of 9.9. D1 men’s soccer will have a maximum roster limit of 28. D1soccer is already an equivalency sport and will continue to offer both partial and full scholarships to recruits. Note: These are the maximum scholarship and roster limits set by the NCAA, but schools aren’t required to meet these maximums. TennZip back writing again: Living far away from Akron, I have no contact with any of the Akron soccer coaches or anyone in the Athletic director's department. How many schools in Division 1 are now expected to fully fund 28 scholarships for men's soccer? Schools like Michigan, Ohio State, and Clemson (with huge football revenue) could have a significant advantage in soccer. Fortunately, none of the schools in the Big East are football powerhouses. I know that HillTopper and others that post on the board are tight with Charles Guthrie. It appears that YipaZip is very tight with the soccer coaches. What is the anticipation for the changes that Akron and other Big East schools will make in terms of the number of scholarships that will be used in fall 2025?

Z.I.P. has a good post .... I certainly did not understand the process of how the Hermann Trophy winner is selected. Emil sadly was not on the pre season watch list https://unitedsoccercoaches.org/2024-mens-hermann-trophy-watch-list-announced/ here is a good article about the selection process Sadly, the Akron soccer SID Sean Palchick did not energize the Akron Fans to nominate Emil. https://www.machermanntrophy.org/selection Timeline Mid-August – Men’s and women’s Preseason Watch list is released (Approximately the top 40 males and top 40 female Division I college soccer players from the previous season) Early October – The “Candidates We Missed” campaign. College SIDs can energize their fans to nominate a player who did not make the Preseason Watch List to make the ballot in November. Mid November – The semifinalists (top 15 men and top 15 women) are announced. The voting of Division I coaches begins. Mid December – Top three women’s finalists announced at NCAA Women’s College Cup; Top three men’s finalists announced at NCAA Men’s College Cup. Early January - The men’s and women’s winners are announced at press conference and honored at MAC Awards Banquet. I sure hope that Sean Palchick is very active in mid November.......in making the various Division 1 coaches aware of why Emil should be the Hermann Trophy winner Near the end of the collegiate regular season, 15 players whom the committee considers the best in Division I soccer are announced as semifinalists for the award. That list is then voted on through an online voting process by men's and women's Division I soccer coaches whose teams are current NSCAA College Services members.

I wonder when the Akron Beacon Journal is going to start covering this team again. It is disappointing that Chad Welker is the only one asking questions. The Beacon Journal needs to do an article on the Zips and their 8 game winning streak. The Beacon also needs to recognize the Big East Midwest division champions.

Make sure...that you read the entire post.....you will be super happy to read the last thing that I typed Xavier looked like a good soccer team when they played Akron tonight, Xavier played Butler . Butler was 0-5-0 in the league Butler beat the snot out of Xavier tonight. Butler with a 5-1 win St. Johns moved into a first place tie atop the east division with a 1-0 win over Seton Hall U Conn came into tonight with a 3-1-1 league record Providence had a quality 2-1 win tonight over a good UConn team Congratulations to the Big East Midwest Division Champions....the mighty Akron Zips !!! Big East standings Midwest Akron 6-0-0 18 Marquette 2-2-2 8 Creighton 2-3-1 7 DePaul 1-3-2 5 Xavier 1-3-2 5 Butler 1-5-0 3 East G'Town and St. Johns both 4-1-1 13 Providence 3-1-2 11 UConn 3-2-1 10 Seton Hall 2-3-1 7 Villanova 0-5-1 1 Saturday games Providence at Villanova noon DePaul at Georgetown 1 pm UConn at St. Johns 2 pm Butler at Creighton 4 pm Seton Hall at Xavier 7 pm Akron at Marquette 8 pm...........................game will be on FloFC saving the best part for last at 9;42 PM.....the zips are showing as #21 in RPI https://rpiupdatemenssoccer.blogspot.com/search/label/RPI Rank

Outstanding team effort tonight. I am so happy to see the zips score a rebound goal tonight. Victor Gaulmin deserves to be in the post game press conference. Victor probably had his best game as a zip. He made some outstanding passes. The zips midfield of WKWK, Matt Dreas and Victor Gaulmin controlled the middle of the field in the last 80 minutes of the game Jonas Buechte really was fantastic in the 2nd half. He anticipated very well and he totally shut down Creighton on Jonas's half of the field. Chad Welker was bragging on Josh Hardin at the end of the game. Josh Hardin deserves a ton of credit. He was a highly touted junior and did not have much impact as a freshman. The young man has worked very hard and is now an excellent right back. The coaches have done well to make adjustments after the 1-3-3 start. What I love to see about the team is how they have multiple guys attacking the goal when there is an opportunity. Emil J. is obviously a gifted goal scorer. But, Emil also has great vision and he is a very unselfish passer. Dyson, WKWK, Victor, and Malik know that if they attack the goal, Emil will almost always see them and good things will happen. Finally, I do not know whose job it is........to promote Emil J. for the Hermann Trophy. I assume that is the job of the soccer SID. That person better be working super hard to promote Emil J as the player that should win the Hermann Trophy. Emil J. is a true team player. His work rate is off the charts. He has spectacular vision and is a great scorer/passer. 15 games - 18 goals and 7 assists. Spectacular.

Matt Dreas had a very nice first half. He and Victor Gaulmin did well stepping into passing lanes. Creighton controlled the ball for the first 10 minutes...but Akron midfielders stepped up and helped Akron get a better portion of possession. I am always nervous when I see that Chico Grajeda is the head referee. He always gives a lot of yellows when players talk back(dissent). Zips have been well coached and are not arguing with Grajeda.

One wednesday afternoon result was absolutely shocking to me Georgetown, 4-1-0 ...in the league played Villanova 0-5-0 the 2 teams played to a 3-3 tie this tie against a winless Big East team dropped Georgetown down to #10 in RPI UConn and St. Johns can both tie Georgetown at 4-1-1 if UConn and St. John's can get wins tonight Marquette played at DePaul this afternoon the 2 teams played to a 2-2 tie Marquette now has 8 points as a result of their 2-2-2 record DePaul is now 1-3-2 Go, Zips.....The zips can win the Midwest division with a win tonight in all honesty, they would also win the division with a tie.... as of 5:37 this afternoon, the zips are #32 in RPI The zips need to get the full 3 points tonight. Creighton is #48 in RPI...they are the highest ranked RPI team on Akron's remaining schedule. The zips must get a win tonight......to further improve their RPI.
